I only tend to do one or two missions at a time and it's become even more addictive now I'm close to unlocking the third area. I played it on my own for the first few months, relying on traps, but you get to a point where you can't do that anymore and I've been playing with randoms, which has been mostly positive. Not really interested in 'that other mode' but I'm thoroughly enjoying the vanilla version.
