I've had my MDR-1As for a while and I'm really happy with them. Yes, the bass can be a bit too much sometimes but it's nothing a little EQ can't fix.
Out of curiosity, what would be the 'next level' for me? I mean, what similar-sounding headphones could I get to upgrade from these? A purely theoretical point, because I can't see myself spending more anytime soon...
Hmm. As Moot will attest, the Fostex TH-X00 is quite corking. Beyond that the Fostex TH900 is the premium bass cannon with a price to match. The ZMF Atticus is a sidestep from that and there are always the premium closed Sonys further up the chain.
What's your specific signature tho, bass yes but what elssssse

If you can get hold of them the Fostex TH-X00s are the daddy of all headphones I've tried. The bass is ridiculous - good ridic - but they're not just good for punchy stuff, I love 'em for all sorts. Dylan's John Wesley Harding, which is mostly acoustic, sounds immense. They do go into overdrive for hip hop though, Phrenology through them is beastly - put Sacrifice through them for an example of why it's worth spending. I've put that track on for the biggest of divert-all-power-to-shields naysayers and they've had to admit there was something special going on.

Wow, the TH-X00 seem to be just what I'm looking for... strong but defined bass and clear but non-piercing highs. Thanks for the suggestion. Being low impedance they shouldn't need an amp, right?

If I take them to work I go straight from the Fiio as the portable E12a amp I use for my AKG k550s - the absolute best everyday cans sensible money can buy - doesn't do them any favours. At home it's amp/dac all the way, but they sound terrific straight from source.
A workmate's on the hunt for a decent set on in-ear wireless headphones. Upper limit of budget is £350. Usage will be gym mostly, and general faffing in the morning while doing hair etc.
He listens mostly to audiobooks but is a film buff too so needs big budget explosions to sound agreeable.
Hmm, not really into the wireless/BT set so I'd default to the reliable mainstreamers, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Sony and maybe KEF (Motion One, very manly). Depends if he wants ANC. Sony will get bassy, others will be more balanced. I doubt he'll need to spend that much to get something decent.
