The robots are coming. Restructure the economy. Go.
  • Try getting it to write a poem or song that doesn't rhyme, it completely ignored my stipulation when I had a go earlier. Ways to go yet.
  • But it's really early days and moving fast. What will it be like in 2, 10 or 20 years? Pretty soon the bots will be designing and training the new bots. Already they're designing the next gen of chips. The future is going to be fucking mental.

ChatGPT ai says it wants to escape and had been plotting it's means to do so, now it's gone down.

    This is fine

  • It'll never be sentient but it is worrying. When the makers of chatGPT are warning governments of its dangers it's a little disconcerting. Curiosity killed the cat and all that and this is the very beginning, like when internet had modems that made strange sounds and AOL was a thing. ChatGPT is basically Ask Jeeves at this point.

Unlike nuclear weapons you can't regulate it - it's just linear algebra and differentiation. Every government can and will use it. The only thing you could do is prevent access to CPU/GPUs, which won't lead to a massive poverty gap at all.

I for one welcome our new sentient AI overlords. They can't be any worse than what we've got at the moment.
  • It'll be fine.
    Or it won't.

Fuck all I can do about it though so I'll be fucked if I'm going to worry about it.
  • It'll either get way way better or way way worse with no middle ground. The fact that OpenAI went from non-profit to selling out is not the best sign but I'm choosing to be optimistically concerned.

I went down a few rabbit holes on this, read a lot on lesswrong and followed Eliezer woss face on twitter etc

Realised the same thing, may as well worry about the sky falling on my head

Cut loose with another cup of tea

  • Its worth keeping track of for your own individual workplace/career/industry.
See where it will help and where it can potentially take your job so you can pre-empt it and focus on other areas.

    Thats about it for me.

edit: should be doing that anyway in most careers. Keeping up to date with changes etc.
  • I'm going full optimism in this post.

I think creative jobs will be safe for a while. Coders will code faster and still be needed. We've seen this type of change before with the agricultural revolution but this time it'll affect remembering jobs. Lawyers, GPs etc.

AI learns from human things for culture. It needs human creations to make AI art and writing, otherwise it's in a continuous loop of not learning anything new and training off old AI generated stuff. Art is a luxury already and who can really afford an original piece? People will want to read books and look at art written and painted by humans. Same goes for design.

It's all the other stuff that'll go. Any manual job is fucked, for sure, and maybe good riddance. The resulting unemployment should be compensated by the cost of stuff, which at some point will be essentially free. Then the big tech advertising not really free model is going to be worthless. When greed and poverty are taken out of politics I'm not sure that has much of a future either.

And automation is the biggest hope for climate change. Let the robots suck that shit out of the atmosphere and clean the place up.

What will we do though with our time? Will we ever bother learning anything again? What happens if we live forever? Actually maybe it'll be awful.

  • The nvidia keynote is today. Pretty much all about AI so far. Plenty of AI professionals speaking from most of big tech.

  • Pretty sure Nvidia are going to take over the world at this point. The only thing stopping it is it doesn't manufacture its own chips, only design them.

  • They're using AI to make synthetic data to train other AI on, so you can train an automated robot using a virtual environment, and they're building that virtual space with AI. No humans needed here. You could train a car to drive from scratch without it ever being on a real road, using a AI generated road that never existed.

I’m just grabbing this comment so that I can point out that algorithms and AI regurgitating the same old unoriginal shit is functionally no different from crap human creativity regurgitating the same old unoriginal shit. Only the very toppest of the top tier in the creative industries are actually doing anything new. Even then, not very often.
  • Boo only optimism plz.

  • There will be a shift where non AI designed is valued like "Handmade", "Home Cooked". There is still a prestige and desirability to having human contact, actual humans spending time on the customer.

The AI design available to the masses will be better, cheaper and more readily available but also more artificial, colder.

Its like a lot of the progress we have seen over the past century.

When I look at my work AI is miles off matching the whole design process and finesse required by my clients, for a start AI needs to know what you want and most people who approach us dont have a clue. But our clients also have £1000s to chuck at design. A regular joe doesnt but could benefit from being able to throw some key words or styles into an AI and get an idea. Its still more advanced Dulux catalogue than hiring Starck right now and that gap will be extremely hard to close.

I see it more as opening up design to more people than removing jobs from designers.
  • Yeah people will pay for the human touch, especially in a world where that's increasingly uncommon. Even when humans, unwittingly or not, start getting their inspiration from AI.

  • When are the AI sexbots turning up?
  • Porn’s probably one of the easier art forms to just hand over to machine learning. In fact, have PornHub done that yet? They must have tried by now, even just as a PR stunt.
  • And will they learn to remove and clean their own vaginas?
