Yeah, absolutely horrific.  I had a bit of a lump in my throat earlier when he was talking about the Christmas truce. They came so close to ending the war their, but it wasn't to be.

I've forgotten which thread Ozno recommended the 1978 A H Halsey Reith Lectures but those really were a bit creepy by the last couple. His push for much greater democratic participation as the only way to avert what was he saw as coming our way was shockingly sobering. Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon series made me weep at certain points. His selection of first hand accounts are flawless.

Truth and intellectual honesty is hard to find at the Beeb these days, but this was just that. Shame it was from the 70s. I guess sociology is a worthy discipline after all.
  • Which are the best eps of Hardcore History? Can barely tell what the paid for eps are even about!
  • Wrath of khans for me. Worth it for the correspondence with
    the pope.
  • Oh shit, I listened to those before they went behind a pay wall.

Death throes of the republic is pretty good. It's about the end of the Republic of Rome and the beginning of the reign of emperors.

If you like Roman stuff, Punic Nightmares is also good. They cover the Punic wars between Rome and Carthage/Hannibal.
  • The WWI series was stunning.  I've listened to a couple of others and while very good, they haven't grabbed me the way that did.

Edit** You were wanting the pay per listen ones.
  • Currently hooked on "my dad wrote a porno"

Basic premise is that a guy finds out his dad has written an erotic novel and decides it's a good idea to get some of his friends round a table and do a reading.
    Utterly hilarious.
Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.
  • Ha, excellent.

I like You Must Remember This, which is a podcast about Hollywood history and stories from around 1940s onwards. Some really interesting and good background to all the goings on in Hollywood.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Tempted to download and cane through Wrath of the Khans on my holiday next week.

Been enjoying Fighting in the War Room for my film/culture fix recently. They also do a Game of Thrones podcast which seems pretty good, if you're into that sort of thing.
  • I would say the Wrath of Khans is worth it and would be a great holiday accompaniment.

I particularly liked 'oh, can you all wait here whilst I get my axe. Cheers'

Love this shit, Ian Shepherd is true and real.
  • Repeated shout out for Athletico Mince, the football podcast with Bob Mortimer and 8% football content. It's brilliant.

I Was There Too is an interesting Hollywood related podcast. Crew and cast members describe roles etc in various films and their careers/experience. There's been some good guest's Jenette Goldstein (Private Vasquez, Aliens) being memorable.
  • Listening to Common Sense ep 305. I've never looked at him as a self-involved American before, until this ep. He's way off base, bordering on reprehensible.

Is that him borderline justifying Trump as a protest vote? It'l be interesting to see if his tune changes or edits next ep.

No, I get that. It's him arguing that America is disproportionately responsible for dealing with humanitarian crises abroad and maybe other countries should be picking up the slack.
  • Basically saying that everyone stays out of these conflicts because America has a big army and so gets dumped on to pick up the global pieces. I was fucking gobsmacked at the lack of awareness.
  • I fucking knew it.

I knew my unease at his delivery was well-founded.
  • Assuming I'm reading that response right, glad it's not just me. Was worried I'd be out on my own on this one...

I've listened to a few Common Senses in the past and I bet he flip flops soon

He seems to want to be liked more than anyone should (which is to say at all) and I imagine there will be backlash from this and he'll kowtow to it, or worse try to justify his opinion

Nah, spidey sense has tingled with common sense for me too.

Haven't listened to this one though.

I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Adnan used is getting a new trial, serial fans. He will be a free man within a year or two.
  • Been enjoying a lot of "The Fighter And The Kid" recently. Comedian Bryan Callen and former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub sit about and discuss UFC, current stuff etc etc. Regularly have guests too. It's basically Joe Rogan's but without him being all existential and "deep" whilst grilling the guests. These two just have a laugh, really. Brendan is obvs a bit YO BRO YO BRAH but he's funny and calls UFC stuff very well and I kinda fancy the shit outta him.

Designer Notes's latest episode is a goodun. Long interview with Louis Castle of Westwood studios co-founder fame chattin' about the birth of the RTS, how the the professional casting director they hired for the Command & Conquer FMVs ended up playing Kane himself and spending the 90's working with Richard Branson.

My indulgence in History of Philosophy is at last past the socratics and into late antiquity. Can't help but feel modern discovery has made moot half of what those guys discuss. Theory of forms is still something I struggle to appreciate.

    Diogenes has some bangin' quotes.
