  • OK so Chapter 1 done and dusted.

    I really like it!

It's got a proper SEGA vibe, the brawling is good brawling and most surprisingly, the story is pretty well told (so far at least).

End of chapter boss took 3 attempts, to my shame, but felt particularly good as I'd already come to know him as a bit of a shit.

Not done a damned thing outside of the main missions so far, and the zaniness has been kept to a minimum, but really looking forward to cracking on.

    It's great!

Just checking - there's no lock-on in combat, right?

Right so here's my progress update.
    25:42 hours in.
    29.98%
    50/100 sub stories
18/50 buildings bought (I've spent a lot of money on circuit racers)
    Still in chapter 6.

Urgghhhhhh I can't stop doing everything. Possibly need to start pushing the story forward. For people looking for a whack of substories in the same place (might be nearly 10?!) then the whole

  • This game feels entirely balanced to include sub quests In a particular play through. Sometimes just playing through the story feels like it is 70% cutscenes and and the rest actual playing game. Messing about really is essential imo.

Yeah, laughs a plenty, but there's plenty of other emotions that come into play too. It's the third game in 3 or so months to draw tears from me. Dunno if that's getting easier to do because I'm getting older or what, but the main story is seriously good.

That's a regularity of Japanese fiction, draws from severe emotions in a Bollywood manner - flips the switch back and forth. Late 90s Japanese not-horror flicks are a sight to behold for that

Yar - I already said it's basically a soap opera (the whole series is, except perhaps the first which plays it more straight). And it relies on that soap opera melodrama which hits home perfectly here. Tonal shifts only serve to make those intense moments stronger, not undermine them. Incredible.

Maybe my favourite Yakuza game of all of them.
  • The Bollywood point is totally on point. Where this game makes it work, I think over a film, is space to breathe between the swings (both in time and who is involved) it makes it feel less like contrived bollocks and more like catching bits of life around town.
  • Well, this evening, aside from continuing Majima's story I also
