I mean one of the two of them writes for Edge on a monthly basis so I’m not so sure they could?

    Didn't know that.

I stopped my Edge sub many years ago. That was nothing to do with the quality of writing, just that my tastes are very niche. I just wasn't reading it any more (and the type got smaller!)

I gave up on Retro Gamer too due to its focus on UK micros which I have zero interest in (its an era that very nearly put me off gaming for good).  It never went deep enough for me into areas I found interesting sadly. I can see why though given my Eastern tastes.

Websites are great for reviews (though I tend to know what I want). Sadly I find mainstream games pretty much a turn off now. Even Nintendo's main output doesn't tickle me as much.  I've collapsed my tastes right down to shmups, puzzles, arcade racers and a handful of oddities. I doubt I'll ever get a physical magazine I'd get enough out of.

Edge's in depth industry stuff and focus on studios was the last nail in the coffin. No interest in any of that. Also felt they took gaming far too seriously. It's only gaming, after all.

I would do a magazine EIS.

Same for me, and I couldn't care less for reviews these days. More interested in previews or watching someone play a game for 5 mins to get an idea of what it is.
  • I’m still in with it and probably will be until the end. If only for the art design and lovely covers.

Not quite monthly - nothing in the next one, for example - but I'm on a pretty good run this year.
  • Gotta admit that I scan the small print of contributors at the front to see if your name appears.  Do it every month…
  • I'm terrible at buying it and then forgetting about it then damn I'm in sainsbos and there's the new one.

  • Is GamesTM magazine still a thing
Don't wank. Zinc in your sperms
  • No, it went a few years ago.
  • Retro Gamer, Edge and Playstation Magazine (which isn't branded as official now) are the only print mags that still arrive for scanning at work. Just realised I haven't seen the Xbox one for a few months.

Times have changed. We've all changed along with them. I used to buy EDGE religiously (as I'm sure most of you did) many moons ago, back in the era of Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast ect. Unfortunately, my passion for games has diminished over the years and with it my need to stay informed and soak up all gaming related knowledge. To the point now where I can go weeks or months without being invested in anything.

It's a shame, because back when gaming was everything to me it was a real special time. Glad I was around for the days of magazines and chatting to lads in Game about whats coming out. Seems like those times are just another casualty of the internet.
  • Does anyone remember Arcade?

I really liked that but looking back it’s attempts at mature were really bordering on Loaded with Games. When I was a kid the free stuff was fun and the competition that tasked with coming up with Star Wars based euphemisms for masturbation (I think the one that sticks in my head and was probably a winner was “strangling the lando”) would have meant something if I was older.

Still it came once with a free copy of Game Over which is a fantastic book.
  • I used to buy Arcade. There was another fairly short lived one around the same time. Was Neil West involved in Arcade? If not he was editor of the I can't remember the name of.

Edit: Total Control (or just Control?)

I think I have the complete run of Arcade somewhere. Think it only lasted about ten issues.
  • Gaming should be exciting.

Lot of writers, and game devs, have forgotten that.

This is the long term impact of no Sega consoles. You all did this.
Wind Waker is a bad game
  • Happy to say I played no part in the downfall of gaming.
  • Happy to say I have now played my part in ruining games with my articles. Glad I could make them boring and annoying for everyone.

Super Play remains my favourite magazine ever.  But I need to put that in context. The MD/SNES era was great. It was exciting. A dawn of what could be possible and not always be shackled by tech restraints.

Import gaming became a thing. And SP covered that.

Early 90s were a great time for me too. Mid 20s. A job I liked. All that gubbins. Wifey was still called Girlfriend version X. So SNES gaming and all that guff was mixed up in it.

The magazine had wit and didn't take itself too seriously but the writing was good.

As as much as I miss Sega, they only have themselves to blame for their epic display of fuckwittery beginning with the Megadrive add on abominations.

That whole fucking early 3D, multimedia era. Was a load of old bollocks.

And that’s the era Edge was born in. Issue one’s cover story was about the 3DO.

    Yeah. I really hated it.

I saw it first when Dragon's Lair came out. That was arcade era....googles....

    1983.

I saw it in the arcade. Bear in mind I was 16 or 17 then and been writing code for a few years. Only BASIC on an Apple II or BBC-B.

The crowds were all around it agog. 2nd monitor atop the cab for spectating. I saw the "game" for what it was even then after a few seconds. A linked sequence of video files in a primitive tree topology.

I played it once. Was put off by the obvious load delays and the mean, coin grabbing play.

Then I saw it all come back again in the home except it looked shit. No Bluth animation to turn the head.

It was Emperor's new clothes hiding a dearth of gameplay.  I loathed it then and I loath it now.

    Modern intro sequences?  Fuck off.

I used to love EGM, mostly because being a yank mag it had news about three months earlier than we got it over here. Plus a brilliant article about a SF3 wishlist, long before SF3 ever came out
