Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?

Regicide is fucking great. Just played 2 hands with some_guy. App is well worth it too. Good quick rules vid in it, and the it helps with the math throughout.

    Nailed it second time around.

Nice, we had our first game last night and really enjoyed it too. We almost defeated the 2nd last king before dying after my wife wasn't able to draw enough block.

The mechanic for exact kills putting the boss card to the top of the draw pile is great.

Yeah. Absolutely vital towards the end as well. Our win was largely down to managing to exact kill clubs king to hit spades King next.

Also tried a few of my other recent purchases tonight.

Love letter. Seems pretty cool. Easy teach. Quick rounds. Some good gambling.

Hive. Proper sneaky strategic from a simple premise.

Watergate. Hard teach/first game working out the flow, and we got a major thing wrong leading to an easy win for me as journos, but second game was fantastic. Will definitely be hammering it. Lots of options and tactics going on, and not as daunting as it seems at first. The final round or so was so mental.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I absolutely love Hive. Super strategic and a few of my mates are proper experts at it-I can’t beat the bastards to save my life.

If you liked Love Letter, there are loads of different versions that slightly tweak the gameplay. We have Thanos Love Letter which adds a nice new gameplay mechanic.
Gamertag: aaroncupboard (like the room where you keep towels)
  • Cool. Will keep in the memory banks. Will need to play more to decide if I need more variants or if it just does what it does and I'm happy.

Onitaga just arrived this morning. Yay.

I could definitely believe there's hive experts. Even with early head up arse could tell there was depth. SG won both of those games we did.

Big "that escalated quickly" vibes. Somewhere around turn 6, it goes from put this wherever, what does it matter, to oh fuck, that's a big problem.

Will stress again how awesome Watergate is though. Hanging to play it again.
I'm still great and you still love it.

My bro in law can't beat me at Hive and it infuriates him. It's hilarious.

He's super competitive at everything he does, I just play games to have a good time. This infuriates him even more when I casually place or move my winning piece and just smile at him.

  • Watergate is soooooo well designed. 5 games now, and apart from the first, where we got a rule drastically wrong every game has been tight with amazing twists at the end. And after the first game, you are looking at the time on the box being about right. 30-45 minutes I reckon, maybe an hour if a few things get really tested.

    Wow.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Regicide is so great too. You can pay $4 for a solo version within the app on the phone so you can play whenever. Works great.

It's a tricky fucker. Mechanics are so clever.

It's great fun. The weighted [pucks?] have a satisfying slow slide. Yep it's the one with the magnetic strips Davy. I played shuffleboard once in Canary Wharf and it instantly entered the toppest tier of things I'd have in my large cottage if I won loads of money. So good. Love stuff like that. I think I'm ready to take up lawn bowls, there's a club 5 mins from my house.
I've got a lawns bowl club a couple of mins from my house too, it's been on my list of things to get into for ages.

I could definitely see you as the bad boy of bowls.

Yeh, if you make lists your collection spills onto the living room bookshelves and Mrs Pea gives you THE LOOK.
  • you end up getting a storage locker and they treble the price once they have you on the hook.
  • Onitaga is a little cracker. Going by first 2 games. The teach is basically 30 seconds. Read the set up, read the turn mechanics. Read win conditions, go.

Massive options and problems to deal with immediately out of those simple mechanics.

Game length is 15 minutes on the box. I think our 2 games were even shorter, because fuck ups are potentially instant lose.

Lovely box. Lovely bits. It's great.

Played Lords of Vegas and Concordia last night, two of my absolute favourites. Max player counts too, which they both sing at.

Lords is such a phenomenal game. You can explain it in 5 minutes and then 10 minutes in the gloves are off dice rolling and people cheering/being horrified as casinos merge or change hands. So good.
  • First win in onitaga. Proper game that actually took a while and felt like I made some good tactical decisions. Yay.

I backed My Father's Work through a local store during lockdown last year to help suppoort them and then forgot to do my usual dollar pledge to keep up with updates.

Checked up on it yesterday and was delighted to see it should be here in a month or so.

Been really looking forward to playing this one.
  • Watched a vid preview of that. Looked nice.

I'm still feeling out various games and what's worth buying. Mrs face has a particular lane. Gonna dive in on some nights with some_guy though. We've been hammering 2 player stuff, but keen to try a bunch of the 3+and player stuff I have and also dip into a selection of bigger euros etc.

Leaning towards either Concordia or inis, but also eying off Sherlock Holmes consulting detective, and/or detective city of angels as I think they'll be hits with missus face.

Tried simple little card game The Game on friday. Nice enough little co-op thing. Would pass the time with some drinks and tunes.

Concordia works great 2 player too, on the smaller map. It's a cracking game.
  • Nice. Good to know. I like my complexity to come from a simple a rule set as possible, mostly. And it seems to do a great job of here's some simple actions, but Woah do they create stuff.

In better news for my wallet, some guy already has twilight imperium 4th edition.

Well, I doubt I ever would have taken the plunge, let's be honest, but I'll happily give it a bash for free!

Yeh the way you deck build the action cards in Concordia, but they're also the scoring cards, is superb. I have the older version, I'm not sure how the new Venus edition differs.

I bought Maglev Metro the other day. Been playing some games of Steam Rails to Riches on my phone and realised I didn't really have a train or pick up and deliver game in my collection. Looks fun. Components are really nice.

    Not sure tbh.
  • Pretty sure. I can't recall the name of all the other yt channels that do games, but I wanna say at least 3-4 folks on a couple of them had it firmly in their top 10s. One may have even gone for a 1 spot.

I mean, I don't know that it's the second coming, but gotta figure it'll be solid fun.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I think it needs more than two players.
  • I think it needs more than two players.

    Which game?
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Maglev. Technically it doesn’t but it’s a bit too open I reckon.
  • Ah.

You've probably already waxed lyrical way back in the thread, but while we're here, I assume, given av, Mind Mgmt is as good as the review made it out to be?
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I really liked half of it. My partner liked her half of it. When we swapped sides it was a disaster. But I don’t see that as a problem with the game. It’s just that that one side of the game jived with her whereas I could have enjoyed both.

For a complex game it really suits a situation where one person less into boardgames and the other person is happy to spend minutes crunching.

I’m not sure how good it is at multiplayer as I never played it that way but if you want a 2p game that can scale Witt both players to an intense rivalry or a game that can play well with players who have different amounts of experience then I think it’s a really really good game. I’m not sure many games have that range of ability/skill balancing that feels cool rather than an obvious plaster over a design.
