Stumbled across this recently. Fanaticism warps everything it touches, and in Nazi Germany this included boardgames

  • Interesting.

I have picked up Secret Hitler twice in shops. Trying to decide if it's subject matter or player count that's put me off.

Meanwhile, anyone care to throw your 2 cents in on any if these. This is my long list of wanted.

I'd suggest the top 20 or so are in a rough order of wanting, give or take.

    Give me your thoughts.....

all the thoughts if you have played them. (Have played Qwirkle and Klask and want them. There's a nice cheap pocket qwirkle I'll get at some point.)

Jesus lol. I've a fair few of those, I'll try and sort some comments in a bit.

Just buy Radlands though. Its a really, really nice fast playing 2 player duel.
  • Yeah, it's gonna come sooner than some of the big ones. Card games for under $50 vs board for $100+ is much better for impulse buying.

Concordia - Classic euro, brilliant scoring mechanics, works great at all player counts

Radlands - Gorgeous 2 player duel, fast playing, can be over quick but it doesn't matter as you just go again as setup is less than a minute.

The Quest for El Dorado - Nice little deck builder. Simple but fun race across the map. One of Elliots favourites.

Paris La Cité de la Lumière - One of my favourite 2 players. Interesting score conditions and different actions available from game to game as they are randomly selected. Get the Paris expansion. Its ridiculously cheap and adds loads more actions.

My city - Absolutely phenomenal. My favourite legacy game after Clank! Legacy. Totally different games obvs. Tons of surprises and the game you're left with on completion is great.

    Ceasar! - On my wishlist!

Santorini - Not played for a while but it got a ton of play a few years back. Basically 3d noughts and crosses, kind of. I wasn't keen on all the powers you can add, the base game was good enough. Off the chart table presence. Worth it to show off never mind play. Cheap now too.

Bruxelles 1893 - Also on my wish list!

Klask - Gets played all the time. We have a leader board on the fridge. Absolutely amazing thing to own. Better than air hockey.

Lords of Vegas - One of my favourites. Should replace Monopoly in homes. Easier to teach and a million times better. Great family game. DOES NOT WORK WITH 2. 3 isn't bad, 4 is best.

Spartacus - Fun silly game, lots of back stabbing. Needs full player count. The combat is very neat as your warriors lose attribute dice as they get wounded, thus getting slower or weaker. Not something I'd want to play all thr time but great fun with mates and beers getting rowdy.

Unmatched - Not massively keen. Kept it because Elliot likes it but it's a bit meh and simple imo. Games can drag on.

Zombie teens evolution - For kids, brilliant. Enjoyed playing through with Elliot. WAAAAY too simple otherwise. It's very well done though.

Spirit Island - Only played once, a mates copy. Enjoyed it though and am keen to play more. Couldn't make a definitive judgement yet though.

Everdell - Phenomenal worker placement, engine builder ish. You start doing barely anything on turn one and by the end you're chaining moves and doing allsorts. Gorgeous artwork. Not tried any expansions, honestly don't think it needs any.

    Roam - On my wishlist!

The King's Dilemma - would love to try this.
Sherlock Holmes consulting detective - kind of fussy and boring and the race with Holmes aspect is really terrible.
    Project L - mildly fun
The Quest for El Dorado - exciting and tight.
The initiative - an decent game elevated by a really nice presentation around it. The puzzles are the most fun part.
Paris La Cité de la Lumière - fine.
    My city - phenomenal.
Fog of love - it’s kind of interesting. It purports to be a role play but there are too many scoring mechanics which kind of undermine other role play.
    Cascadia- a nice pleasant game.
    The fuzzies - light fluff.
The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine - sequel is better you need people who can grok trick taking.
Abandon all artichokes - a nice end game condition but a bit basic.
Champions of the wild - needs a fairly extrovert crowd that doesn’t give a fuck about winning
Insider - really nice quick game.
    Klask - great fun.

  • Well, that's awesome guys.

Seriously. A couple of lucky points. I already have the crew 2.

Fog of love is a classic am I curious enough to drop $80+ on it listing.

    Will drop unmatched way back.

Zombie teens is fine to be simple. It'll be an Ara special.
I'm still great and you still love it.

Zombie Teens is basically 'My First Pandemic'. It is brilliant with kids. Elliot loved opening all the envelopes and adding stuff between games.

That's cool, but I think I've hit my roll and write limit. I do love them, but I've acquired WAAAAY too many.
  • Yeah their relative cheapness makes them an easy bung. My City RandW has a legacy mode of sorts which i think is a cool bit of spice to add to the formula.

  • So had cash on pay day, and Fridays have become try board games with some guy night before Bball.

Everdell grabbed, because it was in the shop and on my list.

4 games down now. Absolutely delightful all round. Just the right length. Just the right complexity. Looks delightful.

And as you say frantic: Doesn't feel like it needs an expansion. The deck is so large and the 7-8 event cards can change things so much that I reckon it stands on its own.

Every game I start of Everdell I think "How the frig are we going to get 15(?) cards by the end starting with nothing?!".

Even now I know you can, I still think it.

I think the only expansion I'd maybe want is a little card pack of more creatures. It doesn't need it, but that's the only addition I'd want.

From your list the only one I've played is Santorini. I love this game and it's good for all sorts of players .

Rules are scalable in that you've the basic play and win conditions and then you can introduce ability cards opening up masses of strategy combinations.

There's some imbalance (some of the ability cards feel OP unless you've got a good counter ability) but this is part of the fun and games are pretty quick fire. It's one of the few games that we'll play 4 or 5 rounds back to back as a family.

  • Just ordered Everdell myself. It is soooo highly regarded that I couldn’t ignore it anymore.

Tonight’s Saturday Night Game Night game was 7 Wonders Duel. First time playing and hot damn that was quality. I lost ( as I usually do) to my wife on the very last go with a stunning military victory. Such an impressive little game.

2 Player game of Kanban (original version not the super deluxe reprint) with my wife yesterday.
Forgot how much I love this game, so many things you have to keep in mind.

Highly recommend any of Lacerda's offerings if you like the heavy Euro style game. Be warned though, they're not for the faint of heart!

I was an inch away from getting my first go of The Gallerist last week but there was covid in the family. I must admit there was a quantum of relief not explaining the thing.
  • Yay. Tempy.

We need the mix of games talk and purdy pictures.

Discovered a new games store 15 minutes from home. Does massive discounts compared to reg stores.

30% cheaper on average. Picked up war of whispers and Paris La mare etc etc that shux reviewed...

    Hotness.
