  • First play of Lost Ruins of Arnak tonight. Instantly going on my list of absolute favourites. I just loved every second of it. It looks gorgeous, simple to play but has a significant amount of depth and choices. Just thought it was stunning.

Yeh I love Arnak. Has that thing in games i like where you think "How the frig am I going to get all the way up that research track?" but then you get going and find a way.
  • Adds to list.

Picked up Mind Mgnt, 7 Wonders duel and Pictoria (god I can't remember the names, the one with the dragon on the front.)
I'm still great and you still love it.

7 Wonders Duel is wonderful. Bruno Cathala did an official solo mode for it during lockdown which was decent.
  • 7 wonders duel is an incredible game.

Arnak seems to have a decent looking solo mode and I'm intrigued by an online solo campaign app the developers made.

Played a few games over the weekend.

2 player Beyond the Sun, which I bought last week. I played this again tonight as a 3 player and it is absolutely my new favourite game. Lovely mix of researching new worker placement spots and territory control. Loads of abilities to unlock, and plays in 2 hours or less. Brilliant game.

    BjGpipr.jpeg

Renature, which is an abstract strategy territory control game that, despite the cute animal dominos, is unbelievably cut throat and mean.

    UeoKaUH.jpeg

Akrotiri, a really nice 2 player pick up and deliver/route mapping game that is always interesting.

  • Nice. beyond the Sun is great. Really dig that the base game comes with so many options. 2 versions of player boards, the tableau style thing for tech to mix things up etc.

vanilla still feels like it has heaps of replay after a few games, but if it ever gets stale, the options are already there.

Can bang out a 2 player in 45 I reckon, once you know what's up, but either way, it's snappy.
I'm still great and you still love it.

Played the Monster Hunter World boardgame last night at game club. One of the lads has spent about £220 on it.

My word it was dreadful. Like, really mind numbingly crap. Typical Kickstarter of boxes upon boxes of extra heroes and stupidly oversized miniatures with an utterly shite, half baked game underneath all the bling. Fuck me.

Currently sitting at a score of 8.1 on BGG, probably voted for by all of the mugs that forked out for it.

Problem is, this lad is gonna want to play it on the regular now he's spent all this money, and I never want to play it ever again (and neither does anyone else that was subjected to it).
  • Some nice recommendations- ta

I'm always tempted by games like these! Never give in, though, but I came close with Hellboy and Horizon Zero Dawn. Anyone here played the Hellboy games?

As I've no social life, Friday nights have settled into a routine of soloing Jaws of the Lion in the living room while the family has the TV on, and rather pleasant it is too.

Trouble is, I'm playing using all 4 characters and so games now are 3 - 4 hours as I deliberate over combos...

Oh shit! Well done! Which bits were yours?! I've read both the last issues but paid no attention to the writers...

  • Well they were brilliant bits of writing. The Stegmaier interview even finally persuaded me to purchase Scythe. Haven't played it yet but looking forward to it.

  • Thank you so much. I've been writing on my own blog for a bit but it was weird to be commissioned for something.. scythe is great, if you treat it as a resource management game instead of a war game. One of my favourites.

Good grief Revive is a good game. Actually a bit taken aback by how enamoured I am with this game. Played It solo, 2 player and 4 player in the last 3 days and it's great at all player counts.

Has everything I love. A smidge of deck building(ish), tech trees (2 of), loads of combos, engine building and a superb exploration board. You hit the ground running with options and every single turn you feel you've achieved loads. And, the turns are fast so the game whips along at a great pace. I've played less complex games that take twice as long. The iconography is ridiculously clear.

    Phenomenal game this.

  • My kids have shown the slightest bit of interest in Warhammer so of course I've rushed out and bought one of the Warhammer 40k Starter Sets. For them, ya know. Purely for them and not at all for me... No no. Not at all for me to start painting and collecting...

I have Wednesday off with the older boys so going to spend the day with them assembling miniatures and learning the basics together.

    Can't wait.

    Which did you go for?

The three new Warhammer 40,000 sets are good, as are the little painting starters we've started doing. Feel free to ask for any advice.
  • I went for the £40 starter kit that has two small armies and the paint kit

  • Nice one. Emma, Lizzie and Adam have done some great content for those starter sets over on the Warhammer YouTube channel, and then there are plenty of hobby folk on YouTube that can help you figure out where to go next.
  • Oh excellent, I'll have a look later when at my desk.
Keen to get involved and looking forward to some evenings sat by myself quietly painting :)
