I first bought Edge in Feb 1999, the one win Gran Turismo 2 on the cover. I had picked it up in the newsagents a few times before but it didn't appeal to me for some reason, maybe a bit too highbrow. But I liked the look of that issue and once I read it I became hooked and have bought it ever since. I have also acquired many of the issues before that one, and now am about 20 issues short of a full collection.

It has changed a lot over the years, and not always for the better, but I believe it still has articles and points of view which are a cut above what you find on websites and blogs. For me it has become more serious than it used to be, with more material oriented to those who work in the industry, and less of the fun side, which I miss. I wonder if it is because the industry hasn't offered that much genuinely new in recent years, less of the mind blowing, gob-smacking new tech that was experienced when the original playstation came out, and therefore maybe there is just less to write / get excited about?

I have to say, whenever I see an article or front page piece which is controversial, I don't believe they are trying to be one-sided or biased, as nearly all brands/consoles have had their fair share of love and abuse from the magazine, so seeing the new cover made me smile (and I do expect to buy both the new consoles af some point).

    Porno trawlermen from the '90s.

Readers' Wives was the deadliest catch.

I disliked their coverage of 16-bit games, and found many of their early reviews amateurish, and certainly not what I was looking for at the time, especially as a Sega fan.  I've not been keen on many of their early reviews, on most platforms, whenever I've read them online.   I started to buy it towards the end of the Saturn's life, and only stopped subscribing a couple of months ago.  For a good decade after '98ish I trusted (and far more often than not, agreed with) their reviews more than any publication, in print or online.  A dip in quality coupled with the new website debacle and gradually becoming less interested in modern retail games made me cancel my sub.  Their features haven't interested me for ages, Redeye and Biffo were never satisfactorily replaced for the columns, I never read any of their developer sections towards the back, or the 'focus on...tits in gaming' style of articles.  I doubt I spent longer than ten minutes reading/skimming a new copy in the past year. It's a shame, but it was at the top for an extremely long time, and none of the current alternatives hold a candle to the mag in its prime, or in its current state for that matter, it just ran out of steam.  It's the magazine equivalent of Paul Scholes.

Couldn't put it better myself. I got issue 1 and then every issue for about first ten years. I would only add that when it was good it was head and shoulders above not only other games mags but also other media mags such as films and music. Would love a late 90s era quality Edge-type mag for films, where the reviews actually mean something.
That was awkward and unsettling, never post anything like it again.

Kids these days, eh? They don't know how lucky they are. I remember when someone at school found a porno in a bush near the train lines. It was like finding the holy grail. Covered in gold. With huge tits.

    So casual!
  • So I picked up the issue in WHSmiths today. Seemed a bit lighter than usual, maybe it's the games drought and lack of previews, reviews etc. No. Do you know what it was? The mag is now printed on cheap and light paper. Oh Edge. What have you become?

They made a huge thing about the high quality of the paper when they launched the latest design (and price) as well! I notice there is no mention of the paper quality downgrade in this issue....

The earliest one I recall buying was the half life one. Just a logo on the front.

Freethinker had bought it for years beforehand. It was like 10% of his giro. Proper luxury item to have in a damp  basement flat in Toxteth.

have any subscribers received the new issue yet? I'd usually expect mine to have arrived before it appears in the shops, but then again a few items of post seem to have been slow recently...

now I'm also concerned about the reduction in paper quality which seems like a worrying move!

I've always thought Edge would do much better without them. But then I realise it's probably a shole of caravans and barge fanciers guides keeping the spot varnish and foil on the Edge cover.

I read some mags in a posh waiting room once. Paper you wouldn't believe.

Expensive watches, skiing holidays and gents' supercars. Bag o' shite.
  • So, it looks like the fanboys attracted by the new cover might be sticking around the website for a while. That and cheaper paper, eh? Why not just close it now rather than slowly turning it into CVG? 20 years is a good run, and it's not too late for it to be remembered as a high quality publication.
  • I was quite shocked to see the Edge website run a story a few months ago covering the rumoured specs for the new machines, without really focusing on the 'rumour' part, and citing 'sources'. Perhaps I've just missed this stuff in the past, and perhaps their information was bang on, but I don't remember conjecture and gossip being part of their remit. I'll stick to the Bleacherreport for speculation online.

  • Seems like Sony have given them a lot more access than MS have.
  • Access to their bank account?

my subscription copy arrived just now; the paper quality seems ok to me, a little less glossy than before perhaps, but it is certainly a slimmer issue and it has suffered pretty badly in the post :-\

They are actually getting better with the iPad version and this version downloaded very quickly.

    The cover isn't great though.
