Loving how fucking 2D Zelda combat of all things has turned this forum's action game veterans into a bunch of whinging fannies while ya boi Evil "Press A to win" RedEye is tearing it up.

I just don't think the combat really hangs together in any meaningful way. The boss in the Cathedral and the final boss just... don't really work out too well in the game's combat system. It's also not really what I signed up for so I have no shame in turning on no fail. If I am thinking "jeez this is unfair" after 150 hours of Elden Ring, it's probably not great design.
I thought Cathedral boss was a low point of the game, although ultimately a satisfying challenge as it isn't that difficult when you figure out a good strategy for it. But a battle arena/boss rush type thing felt like a needless bit of padding in an already content-rich game. Haven't done the final boss yet.

New to this. Why is half of the manual in English but everything else is just scribbles? How am I supposed to know whether to click OK or NO whenever I read something?!

It’s meant as a nod to the days of importing foreign language (Japanese mainly) games and how you could piece together the game, the manual, and the text yourself mainly through brute forcing ans/or familiarisation. Your knowledge opens up as you collect pages of the manual too.
I really liked that side of it. The bosses can get in the bin though. Had to baby mode one bit.
Well that would've made sense if they'd swapped all the buttons. For now, the Xbox cloud people are laughing at me for putting "Not in English " in the comment box.

I started this last night. Movement isn't quite as nimble as I was hoping, and combat not quite as tight, so I'm not totally won over, but I seem to be making steady headway and the aesthetic and manual are kinda funky.
Spoiler:
Got a stick, then a sword, then a shield; which I then levelled up, alongside my HP and potion strength (of which I now have three). And hit a well. A fair few things I don't understand yet though - e.g. tuning forks - but presumably that will become clearer, and it sounds like I'll get a lamp soon for teh dark dungeon?
I didn't think the movement/combat in Death's Door was super great but it was smoother and more precise than this. Tunic is more about the funky stuff tbh, you're better off with something like Bloodroots for an all-about-the-beatdown experience.
Having said that this was one of my favourites for years - don't underestimate the funky stuff!
