Hippa to da Hoppa, you just don't stoppa

  • Work music this afternoon, sheer class.

No MC's, but this really is immense. has no right to be as good as it is, considering it really is just a continuation of the soul sample, sped up looped up vocal schtick, but wow. Amazingly listenable album.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • New roots is up  direct streaming, awaiting for it to hit rdio et al.

    Roots? Interesting...

Here's what I've been feeling recently.

    A light sentimental piece.

Slug is very good with sentiment. A good rapper generally, in fact.
I reckon some of you would enjoy listening to the dude, even if you don't like rap/hip hop*...

Atmosphere's (Slug's main group) Headshots: Se7en is an excellent rap album by any standard. Possibly their best, but I'm still going through the body of work, cause I slept on it the first time round.

*Open mind? Good. You'll also be needing this... http://rapgenius.com/Atmosphere-i-wish-those-cats-at-phobia-would-give-me-some-free-shoes-lyrics

    ...

Also thinking about Formb... NMD's penchant for gangsta' stuff... I've been a little indifferent to 'West' Coast stuff, things have changed recently though, tbh. My idea of a 'hard' track would be...

  • Well, that was nothing on the original.

Atmosphere is brilliant. Style has changed greatly over the last 2/3 albums.

Looking forward to The Roots new album, in the same vein as Undun apparently. Has anyone listened yet? Loved Undun yet it felt unfinished.

  • Undun is amazing. In which sense did you find it unfinished?

(When I read about it's premise/concept, it became even more awesome.)
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Illadelph Halflife weighed in at over 78 minutes. Undun worked perfectly as a short album but 38 mins is approaching EP territory. imo most hip-hop albums could do with being trimmed though.

So very short especially considering 3 or 4 tracks are instrumental. Brilliant but more a short story than fully developed.

Anyone listened to the new album yet?

  • Have been bumping the new one for the last 2 days. Same criticisms could probably be levelled at it.

Clocks in at 33 minutes on the sub service version (partly due to unavailable track).

But, like undun, the stuff that is there is brilliant. Probably even darker in tone than undun, all the way through, and the production and such are pretty amazing.

  • In no particular order,

    Ghostface
    Black Thought
    Andre 3000
    Guru
    MF Doom

Saying that, would probably have Biggie in there had he done more than the one studio album and the bundle of P Diddy cash-ins.

Thoroughly enjoying the new Roots album. Think Dark Trinity is possibly one of their best tracks of the last few years. Superb last verse from Greg Porn on that, but unfortunately his solo stuff doesn't seem to measure up

and the Streets for Original Pirate Material which is as close as I've ever come to hearing my life (at that time) being put to music.

Just re-reading the thread, thought I'd highlight this.  That first album really was genuinely superb - Boy in da Corner gets a fair amount of deserved appreciation in this thread, but Original Pirate Material would be higher on my best of the decade list.  The second Streets album wasn't as good, but it got a pass thanks to the concept album thing (and some decent tracks).  The third was actually my biggest disappointment in full-priced music - I paid £8.99 for it and despised it so much I never touched anything else Skinner did.
  • The Streets' releases really did plummet to new depths each time.

    First one was amazing.

A real shame The Beats never took off. Back when Professor Green wasn't a money whore, before Example went dance and before Mitchell Brothers disappeared into oblivion (don't listen to Mr Mitchell's solo mix tape - awful).

Apologies, but I have to quote this. Because still good.

    That is all.

(Also, there's an album called Trophies by Apollo Brown and some other dude that is really good too. Worth it for the intro alone.)
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Off the top of my head:

Doom, gift of gab, edan, ghostface, del

Out of them, I've gone off gab and del a bit these days but used to love em enough to make the list.

Trying to think of a production top 5 but is tricky. Madlib defo on it though.

Don't really listen to much hip hop anymore. Jay electronica is only thing I've really enjoyed in recent years.
  • Production. Good question.

    Premo, Kanye, maybe Just blaze.

  • Rza.

  • saying that, Rza's production seems to be really hit and miss at times. I like it when he keeps it simple, but when he pushes the envelope a bit it is either brilliant our completely flops. The gravediggasz first album for instance, I simultaneously love and hate it. Reunited is probably my favourite hip hop song ever, it's only really got four musical elements to it.
    PSN: Its_DanDan_Ey
  • Rza is worth a placing though as the good stuff he's done is so good, it outweighs anything bad he does.
  • And for his influence really.

Kanye has to be in there. DJ Premier... Neptunes I'd stick in too.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Not a production thing, I'm a penny shy of tuppence with any additional input there, but I like this very much indeed:

Got three of his albums, some gems on each.
  • Yeah, Rza, on balance.

Recent fav of his on one of talib kweli's last albums. amazing. With Busta Rhymes. Will link later.

The Gravediggaz first album is mostly produced by Prince Paul, and the second is more RZA, IIRC. The first is much better.

Along with Premier, Diamond D was probably the finest producer back when I was really into that sort of thing.
