Thanks, will read that and add the other two to my watchlist.Tempy wrote:Watch JSA and Thirst for sure. The politics of The Handmaiden are I guess kinda surface level given the tensions between SK and JP being well know and fairly evident, but yeah there's likely more going on but I was so carried away by it that I didn't really stop for breath to analyse it. This Slate article on its origin in a Victorian novel is good (I felt the structure of the film was definitely very victorian in how it gave you the different perspectives in succession) http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movies/2016/10/park_chan_wook_s_the_handmaiden_based_on_sarah_waters_fingersmith_reviewed.html

JJ has done Wars and Trek. Just because fanboys are fanboys, doesn't mean directors have to be.

Probably more interesting because Whedon got screwed during Ultron so I'd like to know why he'd go back to the big studio deal. I'm guessing the answer is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I've not had a reaction to a horror movie like that since Martyrs. Its a far slower burn, building up the situation and the horror. It feels hostile, it feels off. For those wondering, yes there's moments of gore but they are a necessity to the film as a whole. The ending left me open mouthed. The way its about identity and self and belonging, the alienation of university and slowly finding yourself as an outcast.
Will take something special for it not to be my film of the year.
