Game index getting a raw deal there.

    Top OP Eric.
  • I've tried to do a PC Engine top 10, but I didn't have that many games for it so it's partly based on game I only played briefly, and there's no CD stuff:

    1. R-Type
    2. Devil Crash
    3. Legenday Axe
    4. Military Madness
    5. Gunhed/Star Soldier/Solider Blade
    6. Bloody Wolf
    7. Bomberman '94
    8. Jackie Chan Action Kung-Fu
    9. Dungeon Explorer
    10. Bonk/PC Kid

There's probably at least another dozen shmups of similarly high quality that could go on there (and plenty of other solid arcade conversions), but the Gunhed/Star Soldier series is probably the most highly rated.

Devil Crash has to be up there as it was even one of the best MD games. Legendary Axe is a great scrolling hack 'n' slash thing. Military Madness is an early Advance Wars. Bloody Wolf is a Commando/Mercs type game that looks a bit ropey at first but is surprisingly substantial and really opens out in later levels. Bonk was the PC Engine's answer to Mario and while nowhere near as good, it was fun nonetheless (think it also ended up on other platforms eventually). Jackie Chan is a quality cartoon-style scrolling platform/beat 'em up. Bomberman and Dungeon Explorer are mainly great as multiplayer games. And then R-Type is well... R-Type, perfectly converted and by far the best home version of its time.

PC Engine got a splendid version of Lode Runner and it's available on the Wii VC. The puzzle mode is accompanied by an excellent battle mode for up to 5 players (3 different rulesets) and the VC supports wiimotes and GC pads to ensure 5 player support.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • @JonB

Nice PC Engine list, I've played 6 of those and Jackie Chan on the NES. Ninja Spirit is another PC Engine game I've played a fair bit.

    Seems like a nice console.

  • It is a good console, and so small and light compared to others, but I didn't have it for long. It was hard to import the games reliably at the time, and then the Megadrive came along...

It probably is better than MD/SNES in terms of straight arcade conversions of that mid to late 80s period, but it's not as powerful as either,  and of course it lacks the first party games that Sega or Nintendo could provide.
  • Was huge in Japan though right? Best selling home console over there from 87-90ish I remember reading somewhere once. Basically the period between Famicom and SFC.

edit: something like 10m sold in Japan I think it did.
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • Yeah, all the major Jap 3rd parties made games for it, and most arcade games got ported.

It never got officially released in Europe though.
  • Released far to late in the US, same month as Mega Drive?

Plus its games were far to Japanese centric to appeal to the West, at least in a mass way.

Sooner or later I'm gonna end up picking one up I think. To much of a curiosity not to.
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • If you can get games relatively cheap it'd be well worth it. Not sure whether it's better to go Jap or US, or if games are compatible between the two. The original white Jap machine certainly looks nicer.
  • Its region locked and had tons more games released in Japan so a TurbogGrafx-16 is out straight away.

The OG white model is the nicest looking but it only outputs RF so a Core or Core2 with composite are the best options.
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • Can it be modded to remove the region locking?
  • Gamecube

    01. Super Smash Bros: Melee
    02. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    03. Super Mario Sunshine
    04. Metroid Prime
    05. Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
    06. F-Zero GX
    07. Super Monkey Ball
    08. Metroid Prime II: Echoes
    09. Super Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
    10. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Only three non first party titles and no room for Resident Evil Remake.
  • Can it be modded to remove the region locking?

Pretty sure you can just get a bridge adapter.

  • We have some good numbers now so hopefully I should be able to update consoles top tens (PS1, SNES MD) this week. Good work on the PC Engine JonB

Anyone ever have an Atari Jaguar with more Tha ten games? No I didn't think so!
    Live, PSN & WiiU: Yippeekiyey
  • Yeah, you'd do well to get a top 5 out of that.
  • I did have a jaguar, only had like 6 games though....

    1. Alien v predator
    2. Tempest 2000
    3. Cybermorph
    4. A platformer I can't remember
    5. Doom
    6. Erm.

There weren't many iirc.  Rayman?  Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure?

I always liked the look of that Penguin game.
  • Oooo it was pitfall, that was good I think.

Maybe it's just aged bad or the Jaguar version was superior to the 16Bit version?

  • Always fancied Mark of Kri.

Some older 360 games there, did you ditch the console or were COD2 and Prey memorable favourites?  COD2 was the last one I enjoyed tbh, I borrowed 3 but it was a bit glitchy.  Marble Blast Ultra was great, another fan of Splinter Cell Conviction here.

Think the Jaguar version has a richer pallette and maybe a few more frames of animation but it's still the same unremarkable game.

I ditched the 360 around 2010, got fed up with it/live charges/faults. Picked one up in 2011 though for some online games with mates back home, but got fed up with being shot by CoD savants every 0.2 seconds. CoD2 and Prey were games I really enjoyed back before I got jaded with it, so whilst I admit the games are pretty lo fi by recent 360 standards, I enjoyed the time I had with them.

Yeah, it's probably shit.  I seem to recall it had the original 2600 version hidden which blew my tiny mind at the time.

I always wanted to try the Road Rash and Need for Speed 3DO games, were they as good as made out to be?

I also had a weird Amstrad cartridge console, no idea what that was, had about 3 shit games on it.

Yep, brilliant. It's my fav ever Road Rash. A friend of mind had a 3DO, it was mind bending at the time.
