Might be an idea to replace some cladding on buildings out of petty cash.

"..LONDON (Reuters) - A one-off wealth tax might be a way for British finance minister Rishi Sunak to plug the huge hole in the country’s public finances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, an influential lawmaker said on Monday.

The estimate by the Wealth Tax Commission was based on the tax applying to everyone with individual wealth above 500,000 pounds - or 1 million pounds for a couple - and charged at 1% a year for five years..."

Edit: If people are sufficiently interested there has been an enormous study and report published on the concept.

The full 126 report can be read here - https://static1.squarespace.com/sta...2ff/1610414842497/A-Wealth-Tax-For-The-UK.pdf

And the 12 page exec summary (much easier read) can be found here - https://static1.squarespace.com/sta...01677/A-Wealth-Tax-For-The-UK_ExecSummary.pdf
  • The idea of a Tory govt executing a wealth tax seems so entirely out of character I can't possibly believe it'd ever happen. If it did, that rate doesn't seem enough anyway.
  • The Tory government did loads of uncharacteristic things. It’s very weird.
  • A one off wealth tax? Why limit yourself?

The NHS renationalisation is also a thing that seems out of character but I suspect Boris is so posh he thinks he's a communist once he's had enough wine. Nobody, including Boris, will ever know.

He's better than David Cameron though. I hope that fucker dies in a shed-related writing accident.

I do wonder if Johnson would've turned out all right with a loving, normal family. Nurture informing nature, maybe. Whereas Cameron's a ham bandit through-and-through.

Lots of Tory donors won't want this. So it won't happen.
  • Thatcher enabled Cameron

She changed the world in negative ways

She was properly conservative in a social sense, hated the gays and women’s lib and blacks and single mothers and the feckless poor

There’s simply no comparison. Cameron is merely a typically entitled Etonian PR prick, who at least didn’t give a shit who was fucking who (good thing too, given his porcine proclivities), and cowarded his way out of stopping Osborne’s austerity and the crazies’ europhobia. The only reason to hate him more than proto fascist Johnson, frighteningly inept May or world killer Thatcher is his condom face

May's de-eviled somewhat by her own incompetence, like a second-tier Indiana Jones baddie.

Brilliant. You, sir, are wasted here.

Funny thing is that while the Irish hate Thatcher, many Americans think she is a legend. I think partly because she was played by Meryl Streep in a movie but she is held in high regard as what a good woman leader should be.

They probably would never vote her because, you know, no penis, but still.

Thatcher was beguiled by the market. That was her main problem. Her conservative outlook would have been a result of her upbringing and generation - not that that is an excuse.

A market can be a good thing but without regulation becomes toxic. It's good for kick starting things and getting people scrambling , taking risks and innovating but then it needs to be tempered to prevent monopolistic behavior and greed.

It's a lesson none of them seem to learn - they keep kicking away the scaffolding of regulation. It more likely happens because of conflicts of interest.

She also lost the plot - was in power too long. She didn't have the mental makeup for it. The Yanks have the right idea 7-8 years and off you go.

Yep - her and Regan are the 'Golden Years' of world leadership to some of the yanks.

I think you’re letting her off too easy.

She’s a nasty, anti-immigrant bigot and has been for years. This combined with a need to try and placate the right wing of her party rather than reach out and compromise with Labour after a disastrous election led her to push for the form of Brexit which we’re all facing the consequences of now.

May had a chance to pursue a much softer version of Brexit, she didn’t, she’s as responsible for the mess we’re now in as Cameron.

Worth remembering the yanks had New Deal before we had Post war consensus, maybe, not sure how much new deal achieved

Not letting her off, just ranking her lower than Cameron in my annals of evil.
  • Absolutely hate leveraged buyouts. This will be the death of Asda. It shouldnt be allowed. Just going to assets strip asda and put it in a mountain of debt.

Asda: How to buy a £6.8bn supermarket for £780m

"..This kind of deal is called a leveraged buyout - which means that it involves large amounts of debt.

TDR Capital specialises in this kind of deal. It is also co-owner of EG Group, the worldwide petrol station business which built the brothers' fortune, and which also has large borrowings.

The Issas and TDR each contribute half of the £780m in cash to Asda's former owners, Wal-Mart, which has owned Asda since 1999.

Most of the purchase price - just under £4bn - will be borrowed.

Walmart, the American supermarket which owned Asda for the past 21 years, will retain a small stake in Asda, for £500m, along with a seat on Asda's board.

Then the new owners will sell off parts of Asda to raise the rest of the purchase price.

Asda will sell its warehouses and distribution system for £950m. It will still use them, but in future, it will have to pay rent to their new owners.

And Asda's 323 petrol stations will be sold for £750m to EG Group, adding to the portfolio of more than 6,000 around the world.

The deal is still awaiting approval from the Competition and Markets Authority, which is expected by the summer..."

  • Unfortunately its how the glazers bought Utd as well.
  • Sounds like a scam.

    Yeah, its bewildering.
  • Is this a bad time to be someone who works for Asda?

Oh well it was a good run (George warehouse worker).

Well distribution is being sold off so it depends where in the supply chain you are I imagine.

If you are close to the shopfloor end. If you work at a store or a smaller satellite service building I imagine you will remain part of ASDA and will be OK but might see some changes.

If in a bigger distribution centre it may depend if that is part being sold off.

I think it would be good to ask a manager what sector you fall into.

Change is likely but I wouldnt panic too much, supermarkets are a safe bet these days. Even when supermarkets have folded, cut back on locations or been forced to sell off stores for monopoly reasons those same stores are bought up by other brands and still need staff.

  • Distribution is being sold, but rented back, so shouod be fine I think?
  • I hope so even if it doesn't effect Lurch but I never trust these sub contracted types.
They aren't public facing brands so get away with treating staff worse while ASDA and the like can bang on about how great they are to their staff.
  • Nothing I can do about it so will just see what happens and deal with it when I know more.

Life in general though isn't it?
