Took me 6 attempts to beat the forest guardian, which seems to be still within tutorial territory, for fuck's sake.

He wiped the floor with me when I played at Eurogamer. I returned the favour in the game proper.

  • Not had to do much grinding myself but you sometimes have to be extra quick to switch to 'defend' or 'evade' against the bosses.

Been mostly just feeding the familiars the foods they like, old Drongos evade stat is going through the roof!

Anyone got any advice for what familiars are and are not worth bothering with? Just on my way up to Old Smokey so the ones up to that point please.

It really depends what role you want to play in your party. I like to get stuck in, at that stage i was rocking Mite, Thumbelemur, and Little Bighorn. Little Bighorn is not worth it though toooooo slow.

Water types/fams with water moves will help as its hot up there...

Tbh I really did not pay attention to familiar types early game, just leveled up what I/party got/had with & picked a few up on the way.  As long as the lvl was ok I did not really run into to much trouble boss/bounty wise.  The stage I am at now(well about to put to bed later tonight now that I got what I need lvl & prov wise) forced me to play to the games mechanics.  I had to get some fire fams, & then level them up.  My strongest fams were not cutting it & I really needed the fire types, as I wrote a week or so ago, not paying attention to types would bite me on the ass, & it did in the end.

All I would say is try & get a team/back up that consists of all the types as soon as you can, the types you need for the first chunk of the game are available early game if you put in the hours hunting/battling & it becomes even easier once transports etc become available, remember its mainly the fams that win the fights, Oli & co are really just HP, provs & back up.  Do not hold back on evolutions, if all the moves have been learned & you have back up that can cover your freshly reset lvl1 fam, evolve it.  More moves obviously & most(don't know for sure as I ain't caught them all) in the final evolution offer more choice type & again with, moves that reflect that type.

Another thing to note is if you go fam hunting set Oli/party to "don't do anything," also use weaker/same lvl fams from your party, remove weapons if needed.  Nothing worse coming across a type you need just for Oli etc to waste that sucker when you are not in control of that party member.  Lost count of times the above has happened, also lost count of how many times I wished I had a bloody Poke ball.
  • Okay cool cheers. I've mainly been using Mite as there isn't much need to use anyone else at the moment.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • Nowt wrong with Mite, though he seems not to loved on a few other boards.  Been with me all the way, mainly cause of sword slash.  Had to get him to his final stage though & level him up(again) to help me with my current hurdle.  Rovers played yesterday so tonight is the first night to see if my graft/grind will help me over it.  Fingers crossed.
  • I like that we can call them fams, like they're little rudeboys.

You done the boss i spoilered above yet, or is that who you're grinding for? Im level 25 i think so 30 sounds about right...

I managed him at 27 but used all the phoenix feathers I had and coffee and just snipped him with a slither of life left in Oliver with the other two long dead.  There is something to say for running away and casting storm spells and the quick tapping into defence then rinse and repeat..  took ages

Mite is a da, but he needs to sit back while I prime up some electro dudes for Porco
  • Awww yeah! Hurdle done.  End of the 3 part quest is toast & them fecking purple chests are now mine to plunder.  Still no new bounties are showing, so next up I guess is mopping up a few side quests, purple chests & a visit to the casino & arena before hitting the main tale again.

46 hours on da clock & this game just keeps on getting better, love it!

What's a decent level to take down Porco? I've heard that having hero + familiars at 30 is safe. That right?
  • I reckon you should be more than comfortable at that level Reg(I think I was just under 30).  Also reckon ya mite should be ok, don't get me wrong as I mentioned earlier a good balanced team is key, but I only got on that page recently & the boss that forced that is about 4/5 main bosses on from Porco(cool boss btw). So "perhaps" hold back on team building for a mo, if ya don't fancy it & concentrate on giving the party & fams the best kit poss.

Even after all the hours I have whacked on I am still learning battle skills, cancelling moves, using all out defence/attack more etc.  The last nightmare I fought really pushed Esther & her healing fams to the max.

Ftr, Oli & crew are at 43-42 with 9 fams with highest at 40, low 19.  That includes 3 fully grown.
  • Working dem gold glims is key to getting an edge in boss fights aswell, then making sure the right person/fam collects it & uses it.
  • I also need to stop playing Platoon & hit the hay.

Think message is that I need to grind a bit. Not unhappy with that. Battle system is liked favourite, eternal sonata, so I'm okay with doing it, but expect my gameplay to jump from 25 to 35 hours without me doing anything.
  • This game is like "the good old days" of nintendo where everything feels properly crafted with care and attention.

  • Anyone come across any Twin Signed fams yet?  Interesting mechanic of RPS going on and the twin signs make it even more so.   Just haven't found any yet....

I think this is going to be a long-haul game for me, to be completed over the next few months with bursts of other games played in between (namely Street Fighter and maybe Revengence when it hits the bargain bin).

Hi. Yeah me too, that's how I'm attacking it.

SF and have a look at Revengence on Saturday?
