Aye, for a shit game, it's good. It feels like those OG 3D devs (especially in the PS1's era) had the talent but not the tools, and today - at the top - it's vice versa.

For Honor could so easily be overhauled into a super game, but if it sells poorly it won't get a sequel, and if it does then it'll just be more of the same. I still love games, but I hardly play them any more.

Me and Roujin woulda been all over this online. The full Shugoki.
  • I have a beta key for this if anyone wants it. I would be playing it but my internet has quit. Seems I can invite 3 other Uplay peeps on xbone to the beta too. So I guess I have 4 keys.
  • Looks a shit as the E3 reveal. meh
  • I think this has the potential to be a really good competitive multilayer game, really looking forward to trying out the beta.

No proper single player might hurt it in the same way as it did for R6 Siege. They're following a similar dlc and support model so hopefully it will be able to build up its player base in the same way.
  • My understanding is that there is a single player campaign for each of the factions, it's just that this beta focuses on multiplayer. Pretty sure we've seen gameplay footage. If I've got that wrong, and there's no SP at all, I'll be disappointed.

Anyway, I got an invite too, looking forward to getting my first hands-on.
  • There was a eurogamer article a month or so back about how the single player was a bit boring and felt like an afterthought. Just a kind of expanded tutorial and somewhere to get to grips with each of the characters.

The single player mode is exactly like the Musou games - hundreds of enemies which die in a single hit and points on the map which have to be controlled. Pretty disappointing they went down that route to be honest. The combat when you're duelling is very intimate, so cutting through a tonne of dregs in a single swipe feels cheap and unsatisfying.

The meat of the game obviously lies in the 1 vs 1 situations, which from what I've played, is pretty good. I wanna give this Beta a serious work-out, see if the PvP experience is worth mastering.

Watching Oroboro (Souls PVP streamer) playing the beta in this. Looks good fun tbh. Can imagine the single player being a slog.

I am totally rubbish at this. Probably doesn't help that I immediately gravitated towards the two classes categorised as 'Hard' (i.e. for advanced players), both specialise in evasion and counterattacks. I should probably master the basics first.
  • I played a few games last night and I can see me getting into this.  I think a lot of people don't really appreciate how much nuance there is to the combat in this with the parries, feints, dodges, throws etc

Its going to be a bit of a learning experience for me though as I've never really mastered a game like this before.
  • Spent about 5 hours on this today. Purely 1v1 after the tutorials, once you get your head around the basics it's actually a surprisingly deep fighter. All the fighting game necessities that are present in the Souls series are here but with a cool three level block/parry mechanic.

Only used the Conqueror (big lad with shield and mourning star... I think, the one with the chain) and the Nobushi who's the Nagatana wielding samurai lass. Both play entirely differently and match ups change accordingly, bit like going from Gief to Vega in SFV I suppose.

Didn't have high hopes and managed to wing a code, now I have it preordered on PC and blisters on my thumbs. I think one of the issues I had from watching videos is that it looks clunky as fuck to look at, but once you're controlling it and have the rhythm for it it's actually incredibly satisfying.

  • Dammit you're making it sound good. Why did they show such rubbish vids at E3?! I've it bothered keeping tab in the game cos it looked so rubbish.

  • I dunno, the idea of knights vs vikings vs samurai is cool enough to me. But like I said, it's got a weird clunk to how it looks that really goes away once you're face to face with some bastard with a broadsword. The footsies are two fold, you have the actual physical back and forth as well as the positioning of your weapon/s/and shield. Bit like Nidhogg in that respect, except way more brutal and tactile.

Massive satisfaction to be has as they charge in and rain down a series of feints and blows only for you to bat them all aside. Then read their throw attempt and back hand them away in disgust. All the pattern recognition from fightans is there as well. Which means you can expect a certain attack and commit to a full parry (R2 while you hold the right stick in the correct position just as their weapon lands) then the tablesite turn and you can mount your offensive. It's got that music rhythm satisfaction factor when you're doing well. Except it's not a track it's the failings of someone trying to cut your head off.

Haven't touched the team based side of things at all, but watched some Twitch stuff and that opens up a fair amount of other bits and pieces. Tbf I'd just be happy to buy it if it was purely a 1v1 experience.

  • How you finding it Nexx?

Moved on to the Raider this evening (front cover giant viking with the two handed axe) and had an absolute ball. Starting to work the feint mechanic in to bait counters and dodges, really impressed how varied they've managed to make each of the classes thus far.

Had a crack at the 4v4 Dominion with randoms and was pleasantly surprised. Not quite the cluster fuck I feared, especially since there was no comms. Can imagine beers and headsets would only improve things.

    Nabbed that, thanks.
  • I'm liking the comparisons to fightmans, Pez. Sounds like it could be really satisfying to learn.
  • Any other beta codes going please for console?

  • Errrr I don't I ever registered for that shit. It wasn't the most annoying thing about playing Ubisoft games, thatannoying screen that used to come up every time you start the game. I'll check.
