I've mellowed in both my demeanour and tastes.  Always loved horror, still do.  But I don't know that it's ever been something I've been able to properly enjoy in games.  I remember playing Condemned and absolutely loving that.  But my love of horror has always leaned more towards books and films.  I read less than I should these days, but I'll take my films less gruesome unless there's a damn good reason for the nastiness.  I personally abhor now the torture porn revival that Saw gave birth to.

Generally speaking my tastes in games have contracted ever since I belatedly discovered RPGs at the turn of the century.  Before then I was in to just about every genre except for sports.  I miss being able to properly enjoy a good racer or a fighter, if I'm honest, and I still buy them from time to time, but they can't sustain my interest anymore.
    Get schwifty.

How's the driving been influenced, out of curiosity?

When I'm driving with others in the car, I'll drive conservatively, but on my own (or with the massiv'), while I'm not super aggressive, I'll occasionally do things like brake late, or take corners without braking with almost the same kind of enthusiasm I'd apply to a game.

I recently wore out a clutch like this.

It was quite a hard lesson to learn, tbh.

    Yeah... I've been thinking this.

I think it can be done with a scheme that utilises an extremely fast Wi Fi connection (or wired, if needs be), and a digital camera...

Growing up in the 70s when films boasted a certificate X......that letter, which was reserved for now considered pedestrian stuff such as Death Race 2000, The Octagon and Phantasm added spice. It felt like forbidden fruit. Even Midnight Cowboy got an X - it may have been the first/only X film to win an oscar.

An 18 cert just doesn't have the same ring to it. Though nothing could ever live up to the hype of a teaser trailer on TV for an X certificate film.

Material is so easy to get hold of now....I can remember the thrill of a smuggled VHS copy of The Exorcist being played in the "TV room" in school, a banned film at the time, and being subsequently caught on by a teacher and being chucked out.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.

Never really been into the whole horror thing, so that hasn't changed at all for me.

Main thing I found is that I leave the big games alone if they start taking themselves too seriously. It's not even the game (although I often find them to be a bit boring), but the main character that makes me decide to play or not play something. Nathan Drake, Lara Croft, the Last of Us gang, I couldn't care for any of them and as soon as they started to talk I started to get annoyed. Just let me play my own game and keep your emotions to yourselves, it doesn't add anything at all. When the Horizon trailer was first showed and Aloy started to talk it immediately lost my interest, I might still try it at some point.

Doesn't mean I don't like a good story in games, but I find the bigger games take themselves too seriously and are just not as good at telling stories then they think they are.

Nintendo, smaller (indie) games and the crazy Japanese games seem to be hitting the sweet spot for me right now.

  • When I was younger I played a lot more PC games. RPGs, mostly, with a smattering of strategy. Played from the original FIFA until 2003 or something and now only pick it up every 4 years or so.

Nowadays I generally just play Overwatch or old games. I like chatting when I'm playing so team based games are my favourite flavour. I have the odd phase of revisiting beloved genres and games (classic Sega, usually - Sonic, SoR) but I really don't play a variety of titles anymore. I miss playing fighting games but I'm really bad now I don't have the time to dedicate.
  • I'm sure my tastes have changed a lot over the years, I know that I'ma lot less tolerant of stories in games these days. Just because it's a game doesn't mean you get a pass for hiring someone to write fan fiction level drivel.

Games have changed as well though. MP (and how to keep us playing it) became much more of a focus for devs last gen, how to get  cash from people playing your game seems to be a big part of this gen. Not liking FPS now, when you did a decade ago, might not be completely on you.

My tastes have calcified to the point where I tend to only play games that have some kind of aesthetic/artistic value, whether that's through a strong narrative (like, say... Dragon Quest?) or just strong character design/IP (like Mario). The idea of playing a game purely for fun, like playing some kind of MP game or playing a fun phone game with the generic art direction a lot of phone games seem to have, is repulsive to me. I guess my entire life has become a vain, sad quest to tick off boxes on a vague, undefined bucket list that can never be truly fulfilled.

  • I think having a kid affected me far more than I was prepared for. Not so much in the viewing of video games (although nintendo games in particularly become way more appealing as they attract my daughters attention far more than a generic shooty-bang) but in general terms I find articles about child and animal suffering can be very upsetting. Not just direct cruelty, but even tales of children suffering in hospitals become really gut wrenching.

As for games, I've yet to find any particular gore upsetting ore unpleasant but for the most part I have found it seems more and more juvenile as I get older. I don't mind it as such but it does annoy me that many games become unsuitable for younger games because of over the top gore or very badly done 'adult sex' content. I have a nephew who is 10 and very much loves gaming but so many games are off limits because an 18 rating (or whatever the rating is ) is seen as a selling point.
