Material is so easy to get hold of now....I can remember the thrill of a smuggled VHS copy of The Exorcist being played in the "TV room" in school, a banned film at the time, and being subsequently caught on by a teacher and being chucked out.

I remember a VHS copy being passed round our school when I was 10. My mate next door got it and we watched it round his one evening.
I didn't sleep for weeks. Scared the three of us so much we had nightmares that lasted ages.
It was such a thrill knowing you had a copy of a film that was all but impossible to see at that age

Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.

  • It's not really a change in taste, but in terms of desire to play I'm far more regular with my gaming than I was a few years ago.  I'm regularly putting 1-2hrs in two or three times a week.  Five years ago I was struggling to fill a top five in our GotY threads, but I listed over ten for 2016.  Music is always a constant as I listen to it for most of the day at work, plus I've even started sticking something on the Fostex/Schiit/Fiio headwobble combo while I watch football, as I've realised I lose nothing by muting the commentary.

What has suffered is the number of films I watch per year.  Since I stopped obsessively buying dvds, I've also lapsed into an all-time low of only watching one or two a month unless I'm off work.  It's even worse with TV - I watch Catastrophe and I saw Quarry & Rillington Place recently-ish, but that's it off the top of my head, unless I get a text like 'Rich Hall is Countrier Than You - BBC4.  Looks like the kind of shit you like'.
  • I'm not sure how much my musi tastes have changed, I think they're more stuck in a rut. My iPhone is probably at least 90% stuff from 1990-2010.

My film tastes have probably changed the most; my appetite for 'torture-porn' (never liked that description but you know what I mean) and CGI-feats have diminished somewhat. Don't get me wrong, I still like some CGI-heavy films, but I think I've seen the world (nearly) end too many times for it to hold much sway.

With games, my tastes are probably broadening rather than changing. I used to only like games where you have immediate control of something, and didn't get on quite as well with strategy or RPGs, but that's changed somewhat.
  • I've stopped watching films, and instead consume a monstrous amount of TV. I prefer the longer form of storytelling a TV series gives you over the 90 mins to 2 hours you get in a film. Pretty much only films I watch these days are Marvel, and that's largely because they're still sort of long form given the shared universe.
