I had all my wisdom out under a general. I was warned of possible nerve damage on the lower left one as it was at a weird angle. Sure enough to this day I have slight numbness there. Probably a better outcome than developing a toothache there eventually. Although I still think unless the tooth is breaking through the gum it’s an unnecessary procedure.

These days I can’t drink any hoppy/IPA type beers without feeling sick to my stomach shortly afterwards. It’s a pity that most micro brewers over here think IPAs are the only type of beers worth making.

  • I wear a pretty much full upper denture. It sucks.

Giving myself ibs today thanks to 4am rises and warm nights leading me to need way more caffeine or sugar than usual. This morning I had two iced Starbucks drink things from asda, q can of Monster energy mango flavour, a white coffee from the hospital cafe and a 500ml bottle of irn bru. I've been for two shits. Both... Eventful.

I don't think this battle is over yet.

As I get older I find it easier to cut a lot of sugar out, rarely have a regular pop, chocolate is my only weakness, but nowhere near what I used to eat. Caffeine doesn’t feel like it t affects me although I’ve never tried Red Bull etc.

Back on dental woes - lost my two front teeth as a kid , dentures up to my late 30s, then went for implants, where they removed an additional two teeth and fucked up the ceramic install continually over a year. Fucking hated every part of the process to get implants, but happy with the final results. Cost an arm and a leg though, just about worth it.

My hatred of dentists has grown with all these procedures over the years.

  • I have a couple of seemingly related health problems which have been getting steadily worse over the last 2 years. I’m not in incredible pain or anything like that, but it’s a considerable inconvenience.

I’ve been to the doctor several times and they had no idea what was wrong. I’ve been referred to specialists and they too seem stumped. I’ve even sought 2nd opinions from alternative doctors and specialists, but they’re clueless too.

Do I just have to live with this? I don’t want to be a drama queen, but I have worried perhaps it’s the onset of something more serious. Really not sure if I should be demanding more tests etc. and if so, what should I even be demanding? Just living with this gradually getting worse seems pretty shit.
  • Is this the stuff that happened after your fall?
  • I don’t think so. These other problems have been creeping up for quite a while longer. Although since my fall I have also had sporadic pain in the area around where my kidneys are, but apparently according to the doctor my kidneys are fine.
  • Had my second tooth implant surgery today. As a quick recap, the first attempt was at the end of last year, and failed spectacularly, leaving me in excruciating pain for an entire month, so you can imagine how much I was looking forward to this today...

So anyway, as with the first attempt, I paid extra to have it done under general anaesthetic. First time out, they gave me the drug to drink, I chatted with them for about ten minutes, and then the next thing I knew was I was back home. It was actually the only part of the process that was successful tbh.

Flash forward to today. Again they give me the same drug to drink. I chat with them for about ten minutes...but this time it doesn't put me under.
These fuckwits then come in and perform the procedure while I'm still fucking awake.
g.man: Um...you do realise that this hasn't worked and I'm still wide awake?
Dentist: Ah yes, that happens sometimes. Just relax, you'll be fine.
    g.man: brilliant *rolls eyes*
Fortunately for him they'd put tinted safety glasses on me, so he couldn't see me giving him the stink-eye for the next hour.

The whole point of getting the general is that I have a pronounced gag-reflex with anything dentistry related, so as I'm paying you fucking thousands of pounds for the procedure, just knock me the fuck out and get it done while I'm under and it's easy for you to do it.
Needless to say he tried to put a massive rubber bite block in my mouth to keep it open...but I'm still fucking wide awake you twat, so that's not going to work, is it? Sheesh!

Anyway. It's done now, and the cunt that did it had better pray to fucking god that it's successful this time or there's going to be a murder.

Icing on the cake was they gave me a bunch of pain killers and anti-inflammitories to take home, but didn't actually give me written instructions about when to take them. Christ, even in my doped up state I was savvy enough to be able to tell them I wouldn't be able to remember the instructions they were telling me, but no, nobody took the time to actually write the instructions down for me. *slow clap*

Anaesthetic has worn off now following a nap for a few hours. My face unsurprisingly hurts. I'm not in the best of moods.

    harrumph!

  • Unless I am massively mistaken you are not put under a general orally. That status needs careful management and monitoring. Have you still got two kidneys?
  • I think so. And yes, there's an anaesthesiologist present monitoring everything and I was wired up to the machine that goes ping!
Come with g if you want to live...
  • Are you sure it wasn't rohypnol or an analogue?

    Edit: Wow, ok
  • It's a similar sort of drug tbh. You drink the colourless liquid. You're fine for about ten or fifteen minutes, then BAM you should be out like a light.

  • Been having lower back problems in recent months. Thought it could be something to do with the mattress we've got, because it's often bad when I wake up in the mornings.

Anyway, a doctor sent me for an MRI to get a detailed look at it (which is a horrible experience if you have a bit of claustrophobia). The report said something like a couple of the discs were herniated or bulging.

So, according to this doctor I'd need physiotherapy and he recommended a new mattress, work desk and chair. But another doctor today had a look and reckons it's caused more by extreme temperatures and it just needs a course of pain killers and avoidance of heat or cold. This actually makes sense as it really started after my kidney stone operation at the beginning of the year, and around that time I was using a hot water bottle in that area almost constantly. I really hope this he's right, because I really don't want to be finding money for a new mattress right now.
  • You should be able to just feel bulging discs by hand. Chekc yourself? I understand most people have it but without problems. I’ve got a couple. Very minor localised pain every frenzy months or so, but I do foam rolling and stretching and spine decompressing stuff every day.

  • You can feel this bulge.
  • Anytime mate. Just let me know when.

  • @JonB I hate to say it, but first doctor is probably broadly right.  Whilst I wouldn't say you necessarily need to invest in a new mattress, I'd certainly support the suggestion of physio, and a review of your work station.  (I'd be suggesting that without the MRI showing a disc bulge, more so with it.)  Pain killers are sensible too (not purely to relieve pain, but in order to reduce muscle spasm, which tends to be the cause of much of the worst pain.)

Physio and posture are really important to get right with lower back problems.  Other stuff - avoid bending and lifting if at all possible, but stay mobile and on your feet.  To be honest hot and cold packs are regularly used to treat pain from herniated discs, so I'm not convinced that your hot water bottle caused the trouble..  (Though the surgery might have.)

All of which comes with the massive caveat that I haven't seen your scans, or you.  But yeah, to be honest I'd still listen to Dr 1, particularly with a view to preventing progression/recurrence.

P.S.  In the very, very unlikely event of sudden loss of feeling in your groin, or trouble with your bowels or bladder go to Casualty immediately.

(And if you could diagnose a herniated disc on palpation my job would be a hell of a lot easier.)
  • @tin_robot Thanks for all that. I'll take these pain killers (Voltaren) and see how it goes. I certainly think a change to my working position would be good, and some more exercise, but hopefully can stop short of a new mattress.

What do you mean about surgery possibly causing the problem BTW?
  • One of the best things I ever did was buy a ridiculously expensive matress .

Surgery can sometimes trigger/ exacerbate back problems, simply by virtue of lying on an operating table for a protracted period of time.  (Particularly as you won’t adjust your position if it’s making the problem worse because, thanks to the anaesthetic, you won’t be aware of it.  And of course if you’re under a general anaesthetic they may be moving you around, leaning on you, etc - again without the ability to tell them it’s causing a problem.)

Though to be fair, it shouldn’t really cause the disc prolapse per se, but it could have exacerbated an underlying issue..

    OwO what's this?

  • I ‘popped’ my lower back during deadlifts on Sunday. Minor one. Iced it and already getting better but hate that I can’t train full strength, didn’t do any squats or pulls from floo today. Just upper body.

Are you meant to apply heat after a couple/few days to help blood flow to the area etc?

Ice to reduce swelling immediately after an injury, then heat after that for recovery, but I wouldn't give advice on backs.
  • Yeah I read it’s different for lower back. Some people say not to do heat.
