The Apple Thread
  • In case it's useful to anyone: I just found out you can see the times of messages in the messages app by swiping left on the bubbles.
  • nice AJ, i was looking for that the other day.

Could one of you smart people look at this page/thread - http://forums.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=99969

and let me know if you can do the SSID stuff on an iphone?
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
  • The SSID of your phone's personal hotspot is the name of it (set in general > about). I don't think it'll work, though, 'cause you can't set up an unsecured access point with the hotspot function.

Totally unrelated, but I've just organised all the folders on my iPhone so that none of them scroll other than "games" and "apple crap". Horribly OCD of me, but very satisfying.

Also mildly horrifying is realising I've got to the point where I regularly use five different list apps.
  • I got to that point by just binning everything I didn't use, which was almost all games as it happens. It's equally satisfying decimating the number of update notifications I get.
  • My dad needs to do that, he's got something like 10 pages of apps, each one full. If I bin any more stuff I rarely use, there'll be nothing left on my phone.

How would people feel if I suggested we do a "post your home screens" thing? I'm quite curious about the different ways people organise them.
  • I did that before.  Can't remember if it was here or Blurum or marunrum.
  • i remember that

  • OSX Mavericks is almost here.
    Who will be upgrading?
    Steam: Ruffnekk
    Windows Live: mr of unlocking
    Fightcade2: mrofunlocking
  • Not me, I can't even do Mountain Lion.
  • Seriously?
Even my crappy 2009 Macbook Air (2Gb RAM) can run Mountain Lion?

Mavericks is supposed to be lighter too.
    Steam: Ruffnekk

  • That's two years newer than my black book. Though I do have 4GB RAM.
  • Mind you, Mountain lion isn't as swift as Snow Leopard on 2 GB.
But yeah, it runs okayish as long as I don't open a gazzilion windows.

Looking forward to the RAM compression feature, should give my apps some breathing space when multitasking.
I think my model Air is actually minimum spec for running OSX now....

  • I'll be updating.

I like the cloud password feature built-in, tabbed Finder (at last!), interested in the Maps app (esp. send to iOS), improved calendar (at last!), much improved multiple screen handling (jesus christ at last!), file tags, er that's it.

It'll only cost £20-30 or so, and my 2008 macbook with SSD and 8GB is easily capable of running it.
  • Many under the hood tweaks make this release more significant than previous ones.
Battery life should be up too.

Surprisingly popular.  (I was surprised that anyone replied.)
  • Well, let's try it again, I'm genuinely interested in seeing how peeps have their phones. I'll get the ball rolling.

  • I'd say Safari post-iOS 7 is by far the best browser so you can take that out of your Apple Crap folder for a start.
  • It doesn't let me swap tabs by swiping from the side of the screen, sync my bookmarks and history or have normal and private tabs open at the same time. It may be marginally quicker, but not enough for me to notice.
  • What's a private tab?
  • Ah, I sort of get it. Never use it.
  • One with a clean and disposable history and set of cookies. Mainly used for testing websites and looking at porn.
  • I wouldn't want to lose the side swiping through history over tabs, and my stuff's all iCloud synced.
  • Then Safari is the better browser for you. I do a lot of "open in new tab" and going back and forth between things, plus getting to the back button is quicker than changing tabs with taps.

  • Yes, Boris, much appreciated. :)

Very sensible choices for the doc apps, btw.

So did I, but I thought I'd give it a try since Andy said there was success last time. I know it's probably only me that is interested in seeing others' screens (unless we have any other UI/UX nerds here I've forgotten about), but there is that thing about people liking to show off almost anything they've had input into.

As it's still a new phone it's still not fully bedded in yet.

Apps I can't live without (late edit)

    Safari and Mail (obv)
Mini keepass (free but it's priceless)
    Wunderlist
    Dropbox
Evernote (I don't even use Apples notes so I should move that into a folder really)
