It should also enable Steam VR supersampling so you can also tinker with that.

The AMVR face cover for the Q1 does not fit the Q2 as the clips in the frame are different. Pain in the arse  that this is not mentioned in the product description on Amazon.

The AMVR controller grips seem to do the job though. Is it advisable to still keep the wrist straps on as well as these grips?

After going back to HLA it's clear they're still way ahead of anyone else in terms of figuring out VR. DS is right, as a game it's pretty meh in many ways but as a complete package it's fantastic.

The biggest accomplishment is getting over most of the hurdles that limited VR in the first place. It's just it's so well implemented you don't really notice, you just know somehow that Alyx does it better. 

The Russells are genius. It makes the physicality of VR much less demanding and the experience much more fluid. It also negates the lack of room space if it's your play area is small, and if you're tethered it makes it much less of an issue. Also, it's satisfying as fuck as a mechanic and if you have Index controllers it really adds another layer of immersion. Being able to open your hand fully truly feels like The Force.

The subtle use of hand movement is also well handled. Weirdly, the tracking of Index controllers via base stations often breaks immersion because it's too accurate. If you have the slightest tremble you'll notice it in VR and this gives anything you're holding an unrealistically weightless feeling. This is actually surpressed in Alyx and gives held objects a much weightier feel, yet the translation speed needed to point the gun is lightning fast - so it knows when you're actually aiming as opposed to staring at your gun. 

Valve realised early on that your brain will, to an extent, think your hands are where you see them and uses this in subtle ways. You don't absolutely have to grab a door handle perfectly yet it feels perfectly natural. How long did it take you to realise you can open a door both ways? Again, another thing overcome without getting in the way of gameplay or you even noticing.

Having all the movement option is nice but even if you can't handle continuous yet, shift is miles better than blink. It's enough to convince your brain that you moved there rather than insta-teleported. 

The writing has intentionally been altered for VR because of the ingame headset Russell gives you. He sees what you see and provides company as you go. It'd be a lonely experience without it and it provides light relief during the tense bits. It's also why Alyx speaks and I'm glad they ditched the silent protagonist. In VR things can be way funnier and scarier and Valve delights in this through the writing. The bit at the end of "Jeff" had me pissing myself laughing and it just wouldn't be the same in pancake mode. 

Jeff in general is VR at it's finest. 

It makes me so excited for a sequel because now they have most of the annoying technicalities (which took god knows how many years to solve) out of the way they can really open up on the gameplay.

Gonz has been unusually quiet about getting a headset. How you finding your foray into VR?

Fingers crossed the default position will be fine. Pivoting the headset slightly once it's on can improve focus. Enjoy.

Hopefully the Quest's impressive streaming chops will also benefit from the improved WiFi band. Is the tech already built into the Index or will you need to buy a receiver?
