Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Yeah, the sphinx is great. Teckers himself is a hit weak though. I'd have thought something more like Nagash/Deepkin heroes, with magic all floating around, would have been the ticket.
  • I'm here to say I think making Gazkull increasingly large is dumb. Its like GW have a reached a point now where they have to design a hero character and their default position is just MAEK BIGGE.

I saw a video where a guy said he hoped he would be the size of a redemptor dread. What!?

I realise what im about to say is making me a proper twatty old hipster hobby prick but this is 2nd Ed. Gazhzhzhkull:
    Gazkhull.jpeg

    This is his current model:
    Orks_Ghazghkull_Thraka_01.jpg

The current model looks like oscar the grouch going through his edgy teen phase while taking an overdose of growth hormones. IMO OBVS. Making it bigger will not help it imho if it's just going to be big trash can energy.

The old mini even though he is smol (well, normal sized) has waaaay more character imho, even with his static old pose and those mongol horde vibes that orks sometimes had back then. I would love to see new Gazza be a normal sized orc, but with some interesting orky attite and with a modern sculpt and posing to convey his ferocity and cunning instead of just GRRR HULK SMASHHHHH

There are some interesting bits in it

Slow progress but I'm getting there, two thirds of the box painted. Only 11 more to go until I can try playing the game.
  • Looking good! Nice saturated blue on the Ultramarines there.

I'm in the same boat on my current guy, I just need to do some final twiddly bits and then base him up buuuur somehow I've managed to not do abby painting this weekend, grr!

The new Ghazkul just looks like any old Ork heavy. It's like Megatron in the new Transformers gens - he just became generic and characterless.

No shame in liking the original - I remember getting that, plus I modded a wee epic scale version!

    PSN : time_on_my_hands
  • It's not shame, but I don't want to sound like generic old person "Everything was better in my day". Because as much as I hold love for my old metal carnifex, dat boy was £20 in mid 90s money and his arms were so heavy if you looked at them funny they were gonna drop like needles off a xmas tree.

I struggle with working out if the things I don't like about "modern GW" aren't just nostalgic bs. When I first saw 8th edition being played I was like, where are all templates and scatter dice, what is this!? But then I remembered how long/how many games my friends ever finished vs how easy it is to just play a game in a reasonable amount of time and how much variety the new D6 for everything and mission objectives actually allows in how units fight and how things are scored. Command points are amazing for example, imho.

My biggest gripes are that to my eye, current GW if anything, and only talking 40k as I don't keep up really with AoS, is that Space Marine focus has not only continued, it's got even worse over the years and now the company is in some ultra marvel cinematic universe of buy all these different books you fuckers because we're putting lore and rules for bits and pieces of armies all over the place and it all feels very calculated to try and get everyone to buy everything by combining bits and pieces for different factions into the same books. I'm also not a huge fan of the increasing "tacticool" look to a lot of things. That is an entirely personal thing though and as I said, it's hard to separate my nostalgia for things, particularly the tyranids, who I really don't like the homogenous Geiger makeover they all received during their refresh, for example.

For every gripe though there is something good, I think the sisters are mostly amazing, not a fan of the new rhino and exorcist models, but I didn't much care for the old exorcist either. The Tau have really grown on me though, I left just as they were coming in and to me at the time they reeked a bit of "Hey that manga is getting more popular here in the late 90's, lets do a manga style sci fi army" my inner edgy teenager was having none of it, despite loving every second of shitty anime the scifi channel was showing on friday nights, NOT GRIMDARK DO NOT WANT, etc. I was a bit meh on them when I came back to hobby town, but then i saw the riptides and the stormsuge (oh my squatting beauty, one day i will buy you just to paint, mwah!) and I had to admit, I'd been wrong the whole time, they are amazing.

I think my favourite line of new models though is the Genestealer Cult, I think GW did an almost perfect job in capturing the essence of the army in how the models look, the mining trucks, the dirt bikes and buggies, that kind of retro 70s sci fi looking uniforms, its like these guys jumped straight out of something like Ghosts on Mars (even though that film is nothing to do with anything like w genestealer cult), GW really nailed that going into an abandoned outpost only to be ambushed by the missing civilians vibe.

Edit: Fuck I really want to buy some Genestealer Cult lads now.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • You’ll be happy to know GW have crammed like £100 of stuff into a £60 start collecting Genestealers Cults box then.

I wouldn’t be too down on the next Ghaz upgrade, it really just depends if you like Tom Walton’s vehicles as I think he’s pretty consistent, so I am interested to see what we gets

40k is in a bad place right now I think, I talked about it on the discord today. Marines are always going to take up focus because they have chapters that are equivalent to whole armies (Dark Angles, Space Wolves) and they really need patching up rules and models wise... but they’ve done it really wrong by making them the face of Psychic Awakening, which really needed to be more non-marine focussed to make the balance feel right.

Alternatively if you hate all of that rules bloat and problematic giant good boy faction taking up all the room... come to AoS? It’s good over here.
  • I'm going to go full old man mode and disappoint you greatly, I really, really don't like some of the new AoS. Stormcast look like GW said, "hey space marine players aren't playing AoS, we need to fix that".

I dunno wtf happened to the dwarves, why are there steampunk sky dwarves and the slayers but they seem to be different armies? There are no "normal" dwarves? RIP bugmans brewers!?

Orcs in full plate are not the look for me, I much preferred the old barbaric look.

Gobbos agree gloriously unscathed to some extent and their new squigs and lads are great. New beastmen are gud as well. Some of th he new bone dads and the elves also great.

I agree with you that based on the discord chatter AoS seems much better balanced, I guess since im not playing (at the mo) that I'm just sort of standing by like a prick, heckling from the sidelines.

I dare not look at the start collecting GS Cult box, I still have ALLLLLL my CSM box and my Box Machina minis to paint! A PILE OF SHAME! IN MY HOUSE! NEVER DID I EVER IMAGINE IT WOULD BE GW THAT WOULD CAUSE SUCH A THING *WEEPING SOFTLY*
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • Stomrcast have their own identity, they just surface level look like Marines but it's easy to forget the "Eternals" part and all the Persian/Mythic/Greco-roman influence. They're a good solid faction IMO, and very beginner friendly in the ways you can paint them (more so than Marines). They have some of the best mounts in the whole range, Palladors might be one of the best things GW have ever put out IMO.

And the reason there are no (or less) "normal" factions is because... well, the old world literally blew up. AoS is set in a totally different world, millions of worlds apart with its own realms and lore and so on. Warhammer Fantasy was just that - Fantasy. AoS is High Fantasy, so there will always be limits to how much you like that kind of thing, but the MO is to make things unique, distinct, and reflect that in the play style and aesthetic of the faction. It's really just a great excuse for creative freedom for the design team.

So in AoS Bugman's Brewers can't really exist, as they all died aeons ago. Fyreslayers and Kharadron are apart because they want to avoid a lot of the 40k issues of rolling factions together, and instead focus on specific aesthetics and army ideas in one place to match with AoS's list building and play style. Allies are still a thing if you want flavour, but Fyreslayers are born from the God Grungi's spirit, whereas Kharadron retain the mercantile/artisan styles.

Savage Orcs still exist and they are supported in the Oruk Warclans Battletome, but fullplate Ardboys existed back in Warhammer Fantasy? Ironjawz and Brutes are again, just an extension of one particular aspect of a faction.

Beastmen haven't had an update in a decade or so, and Nighthaunt came about the same way as Daughters of Khaine in that GW were clearly happy enough with a specific aesthetic element of an army and didn't need to extend it too far to make it feel unique.

That said, Cities of Sigmar set a precedent for them trying to roll in various old factions to keep them playable - I believe a bunch of your regular dwarves and elves live there.

I think a lot of it comes down to a fear of change, but WHF was stagnant as fuck. If you want to enjoy the old world... that's where Total Warhammer comes in, but it was something like less than 10% of the company's entire revenue? AoS is doing far, far better. You really need to explore it and understand it before writing it off on first glance IMO. I think AoS armies tend to look way better than 40k armies these days, just because the visual identity for each faction is so strong.

It's easy to glance at it and think "what did they do to my BOY" but as with Dwarves and Orruks... well that's kind of on you for not being familiar with how the ranges work - cos a lot of that old stuff is still there.

We've been using the Shadespire minis for Songs of Blades and Heroes :O
  • For beastmen you mean? I just don't count one shadespire band as an "Update" to a range that is anything between 5 and 10 years old.

Or if you just mean in general then, yea, Underworlds is one of the best things GW do.
  • Temps you're bang on with what you said up there, hence my apology for sounding like a right old wanker! My AoS takes, terrible as they are are pretty much solely informed by my gut reactions to the miniatures I've seen so far and as you've pointed out contain a heavy dose of Cedric Diggory's Dad.

The quality of the new minis is arguably a step above anything that came before, even the ones I'm not keen on and you make a very valid point re the setting, it's completely different, these units don't even exist in the warhammer fantasy universe at this point, they're their own thing in their own universe.

I doubt I will ever pick it up unfortunately as the rate at which I paint itll be years before I get through all the CSM stuff I wanna have a go at painting as it is, but as I say, I know my takes are pretty whack on AoS hence the knowing, preemptive apology.

I de-nurgled him by swapping his gun, trimming the goo dripping off his axe, removing the big fly insignia on his chest and replacing with a vaguely Keeper of Secrets looking skull from the skull box and then filed and filled the logo on his knee pad and drilled out the logo on his shoulder pad to look like big ol' battle damage, since he already comes with lots of chips abs dents on him anyway.

  • Upside down slotta bases during painting, I'm intrigued...is that because you are doing their actual bases separately and these are convenient handles for painting?

@FranticPea I can't do eyes either, curse those with the exceptional fine motor skills and eyesight and brush control who can do them well!!!

This is exactly it - once I'm done painting I'll take them out and flip the bases over , cut out the bit for the tab to go in and then do the basing.

Looks great, anyone else getting a buzz light-year vibe?
  • Not super strong, but it's the super flared lower legs, barrel shaped torso and the spherical shape surrounding his helmet that does it imo.

I believe there are ultimate mad lads out there in the hobbyverse who have actually painted up their marines in buzz lightyear colours.

One of the lads at our club is proper into Nepoleonic wargames, and had recently built a Napoleonic 40k army. It actually looks pretty awesome. I'll try and find pics.
