Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?

I've been thinking about picking up a tank or something to paint, just for that zen feeling.

Reliably informed by those who paint Astra Militarum that the Rogal Dorn is a great piece of kit.

Ooh, bigger than the Leman Russ, smaller than the Baneblade. I dig it.

  • I still have my Emperor's children to finish painting as well as a new starter set I picked up real cheap.
Want to get back into the painting again but been too busy.
Played Oath on Sunday from Leder games and it's brilliant. Really enjoyed my time with it at five players and it's going to be a regular thing.
Also been writing regularly for Tabletop Gaming Magazine as well. Doing a few reviews. It's been fun.

Great work Rev, I’ve got Oath but it’s in my pile of shame, along with many others :-(

I subbed to Tabletop gaming but stopped but that was a year ago. Good mag but the reviews aren’t big enough, 1 page or even less. I’ve bought Senet as well and that has the same issue for me.

  • Just played my first little tutorial game of Warhammer, Space Marines Vs Tyranids. Trying to go slow, work my way through the basics and just get a feel for the game as I've taken the day off tomorrow to hang out with the twins. They've asked if I can teach them how to play and have a tabletop/boardgame day.

    Yes sons, yes we can

  • Just started looking at Mongoose Traveller. Character creation is amazing, though you can't die anymore in the process. You can, however, end up with a character that's heavily in debt, injured, and with enemies, before the game even starts.

If I can get it off the ground I'm going to enjoy running this game.

Oath needs a regular group to play to go through the game as it changes

    Not exactly cuddly, though.

On the other hand, this just proves they can still make square bases, and just further increases my irritation that Blood Bowl - a game in which you lie the miniatures down, and it matters whether they're face up or face down, and is played out on a grid - comes with round bases.

Of course, fans of PC video gaming know The Old World’s setting quite well thanks to the Creative Assembly. The Total War: Warhammer series takes place in the same fictional place and around roughly the same time, and has wowed fans across three interconnected real-time strategy games since 2016.

"Roughly the same time" doing a bit of heavy lifting there, Polygon.
  • Temps what is the business logic of rebooting the thing they killed? Is it just literally that they know there's enough nerds who crave retro now and they can afford to support several more titles? I mean I presume they did away with it in the first place because no-one liked it anymore, or they couldn't camp on IP or something.

I genuinely have no idea, the Studio, aka the creative part of the business, is very closed doors. I do know that the part of the Studio that makes Horus Heresy, Necromunda, and now Old World, etc, is managed by a lot of long-term GW employees, and they tend to go in-depth on quite detailed rulesets that are focussed on bygone eras. I assume they feel like there are now enough veteran hobbyists and gamers that Rank and Flank will sell again.

No Skaven? That does suck. Always my favourite WHFB army.

Then again, I always looked at the units of 100 Skaven slaves and wondered if I had the patience for that. I was always a Deathwing kinda guy - my army is 10 dudes and a tank.

  • Skaven will be in the game, supported by a legacy faction list, because they are not active during the time period that The Old World is set in. They'll have basic rules, but no new miniatures etc.

The core factions that are getting rules are as follows:

    CsKw43KLHs5Rr4ot.jpg

They're all the expected factions that are active around near around the area of WHF known as "The Old World" etc.

Dark Elves, Vampire Counts, Daemons of Chaos, Ogre Kingdoms, Lizardmen, and Chaos Dwarfs are the factions alongside Skaven that aren't getting deep support. Plenty of info here.

Been playing ALOT of The White Castle of late, solo and multiplayer. At its core its just a fairly simple dice placement game, but you only have 9 total actions for the entire game. The trick is to get actions to combo into other actions and its INCREDIBLY satisfying when you're economical.

Devir Games have been hitting it out of the park. I have The Red Cathedral and Luna Capital by them which have also been a big hit with my group.

Tbh, I'd forgotten how many factions there were in the WFHB setting. I wonder if I still have my Ogre Kingdom dudes any where.

  • I've been watching a YouTube channel - Jordan Sorcery - where he's been building a Warhammer Fantasy army, and it struck me (as someone who's been only really into the 40k side of things) just how much character and personality the fantasy minis have in comparison to identically armoured 40k marines and others. Definitely feel I've been missing out.

What's the red cathedral like? I fancied getting that for ages after seeing some positive reviews ages ago but couldn't get it anywhere at the time.

    Sorry, I didn't notice this.

Red Cathedral is superb. Its actually an area majority game, which it absolutely doesn't look like at first glance, but you have limited means of placing 'control' markers so it's super tight. I actually have the expansion but haven't got round to trying it yet.
