Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • I like Mantic Games. But only because I was involved in building this for them..

Given that Blood Bowl is the best thing GW ever made, this has piqued my interest.

Guild Ball was way better than Blood bowl IMO (It's not the Mantic game, just to be clear)

Dreadball. Mileage may vary but I prefer it to Blood Bowl, and I do love Blood Bowl. Dreadball is just slicker, faster and less finicky.

A few years back I managed to get a massive lot of it from ebay. 12 teams, neoprene mat, 2 alternate boards, various NPC minis, acrylic tokens etc for £60. Mental.
  • Guildball was fun while my mate explained the rules to me. It was not fun when he destroyed my team and ground them into the mud.

We switched to co-op games then. There's a Cthulhu game that's brilliant.

When we finish BG3 co-op we'll go back to Cthulhu.

  • The su&d John company review is really fucking great.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I really enjoyed Blood Bowl back in the day (I think I had the third edition - early 90s). Myself and some mates were into 40k so it felt like a nice side game and it was for a bit but some teams seemed really unbalanced. My Undead team could grind out a low score win where as wood elves got massacred so that by half time there was barely a team left let alone the next match.

It's interesting to see how Tom seems to be making better content than quinns at the moment. Great video. I'm thinking of picking up Pax Pamir myself as I have heard really good things

Some teams are definitely stronger than others, but it's the way it creates its own comedy that makes me love it. A ball bouncing between three sections of crowd, being caught against all odds by snotling, who then manages to run within spitting distance of the end zone, only to be turned into puree by a rat ogre is worth the price of admission alone.

I'm sure the living rule book, before GW brought it back, would make it really clear which teams were for experts, which were for beginners, and which were just for the shits and giggles. Not sure if GW are that kind to clarify which of their kits probably aren't worth buying if you want to win...

I wonder if the Lizardmen are still top tier.

I disliked the way you pretty much had to buy 2 boxes of the team to make a proper lineup with the recent versions. Gone are the days of affordable blister packs to boost your team.

I always kit bashed my teams from WHFB infantry boxes. Cheaper and more fun that way. Plus, square bases.

Hee, we did the same using a mix of cheap Warhammer fantasty from the local non-GW shop and old MB board game minatures - Hero Quest and Battle master pieces were repurposed - we liked Blood Bowl but 40k was a big enough money drain.

More likely to check out someone other than GW for the smaller contained games. Thouhg saying that I do like underworlds.

Which games, out of interest? I think I've been happy with every rec I've gone with. (granted a lot where obvious.) War of Whispers and beyond the Sun both awesome and bought off their recs. (As well as a bunch of obvious simple card games.)

I get the feeling Quinns is ready to move on from straight board game reviews. Reckon the stuff he does for his other channel (people play games?) is where his heart is these days. That is an absolute guess because of general vibes, btw, not any specific info I've heard.
I'm still great and you still love it.

Silk, Wavelength and Hansa Teutonica have all fallen flat. I'm not saying I'm totally out of whack, I too love Beyond the Sun.

They were luke warm of The White Castle recently too and that's one of my favourites of 2023.

Wavelength I really like, it's very group dependent though. And I'm not generally a party game fan.
  • I dunno if they hover between being edgy and not liking popular stuff and then hitting hard on stuff they can deliver a more journalistic approach on them. Their new presenter, she's very good, light hearted and reminds me of what they started off as.
No pun included can be fun to watch, providing you don't mind the occasional lecture from them. They seem to do a lot of videos on Kickstarters they've bought that they then seem to not like. they've recently decided to no longer accept review copies.

  • In other news, if you like Blitzkrieg and Caesar from PSC games, then General Orders from Osprey Games is a magnificent 20 minute war game.

https://werenotwizards.co.uk/general-orders-board-game-review-osprey-games/ Yeah I know, self promotion. I spoke about it on the recent podcast as well.

Been also playing kinfire chronicles which is like Gloomhaven but without all the city upkeep bits.

Covid killed a few of the indie minis games - I picked one up called Reality's Edge and had plans to play it but then covid hit and I've never really been able to get people together to play it
