Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • No. ;)

So sign me up for that earthborn rangers or whatever it's called going by that review from su&sd btw.

I'm still great and you still love it.

Huge Anachrony fan so it was probably me. Its a brilliant game, let me know how you find it.

Half way through first game. (Just before impact set up is where we had to stop for dinner last night.)

And it's freakin awesome. Watched a how to play first, and new we'd still be all over the rule book for the first game, and we are, but can already see how it'll crack on once we get all the rules. And once we really got our heads around the "get stuff from future self" thing, oh man, amazing. Proper thematic/gameplay mix, just nailed it. Once you get into the meat of the worker placement, it's not that much rulesier than Everdell.

No it's actually not that complicated, just a few concepts to grok. Some great engine building and a ton of directions to take.

The alternate sides of the timeline tiles make the game VERY spicy. I haven't decided if it's too spicy or not but it's worth a try once you've played a few games. It's still one of my favourites.
  • yeah, when we did initial set up we were like, wait, do we do this as well, seems like a lot. But even just looking at options, I can imagine.

You're literally cringing as people open their palms to reveal what they've taken. It's worth a try, but we've played on the normal sides way more. I can't decide if it's too swingy or not.

Also, I'm definitely in the keep my workers happy camp, but you can absolutely win by working them into the ground.
  • 1-1 for me and some guy.

Lucked out on the lab building that gives free wakey wakey for workers.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Trying b side of player boards now.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I got the third game. Using the b sides. Was easier not having specific buildings to make sure to use to be able to evacuate.

Feel like we missed something with the rules around how to keep track of biggest distance time travelled if that's a one of the bonus vp things.

Straight into a high spot on my list of euro and adjacent games.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Anachrony is a game i'll never get rid of, but i'll play only very rarely because the teach takes a few games to get going.

That's a problem I often have. I prefer medium-heavy Euros the majority of the time, but unless I am playing with others who know them well, the teach can be a pain.
  • You end up in the situation where half way through you have to remind someone of a rule because they weren't paying full attention and it's now your fault they won't have a chance of winning.

I play with the same group of lads so it's not so bad. Anachrony is a game we don't really forget the rules to to be honest. Dunno why. We have played it slot though.
  • I've been learning the new Imperium Horizons and its ok but the different card factions have differing rules and it's a bit overwhelming. It's slightly tumbling on to the side of not being fun to play, and more like work where you are balancing a puzzle. I'm finding it hard to warm to.
On the other side I played Viticulture again, and I struggle to find a bad thing about this game even at two players.

I picked up a cheap ding n dent copy of Tiletum at the weekend, mostly because I love the designers' previous work, in fact one of their games is a contender for my favourite game (Voyages of Marco Polo)

Looking forward to giving it a go

It's a nice game is Tiletum. I'm a fan of those designers too. I have Grand Austria, Golem and Teotihuacan and they're all top games. I really fancy trying Marco Polo.

Dune Imperium is firmly in my top 5 games. It's phenomenal.

I'm not really usually fussed about expansions for boardgames, but the Rise of Ix expansion is a must use for that game after you've played it enough times. Stops the usual race to sell spice and, adds some really interesting cards and factions makes the battles more interesting. Basically makes an amazing game even better.
  • Well, that's the second and third specific rec for dune imperium I've seen recently. Guess I'm getting it.

For about a year I’ve been going around to my colleague’s house to play board games. I’ve never had real life friends who live near by who are into their board games, so it’s been great to play stuff I’ve wanted to get into more often; Ticket to Ride, Catan, Pandemic, that sort of thing. We’ve also played Aliens a few times (my Leroy Jenkins moment to end one game has become its own joke, and Flamme Rouge, but I think my absolute favourite is Dune Imperium. I love that game. After a while, her husband invited me to join in his Gloomhaven nights. He, his friend, and my colleague’s brother had started pre-pandemic, and partly through the pandemic, online, but had petered out. We’re nearing the end now, but over Christmas he bought Frosthaven. We’ve had a look through the box, it looks epic. Well finish Gloomhaven fairly soon, then I think we’ll take a breather playing other things over the summer, then start Frosthaven in the autumn. I’m quite excited for it; I’ve really enjoyed Gloomhaven, but having missed the first half, the overarching story has been a bit lost on me, it’ll be great to be part of a Frosthaven from the start. I was at theirs on Saturday. We had a great game of Dune (I came a close second to my colleague, who pretty much always wins) then we dove into the game her brother brought, Brass: Birmingham. It was my first time playing it, their second. We’ve got a feeling we’re missing something, though; the board and pieces indicate that we’re barely scratching the surface of what it’s possible to do in that game. At the end of the night I jumped in my car only to look at the clock and realise it was almost 3am. It’s a sign of a great night that I had no idea it was so late.

You are literally the gift that keeps on giving and this post makes me smile a huge amount to see how much you are enjoying the cardboard.

We had a few games of Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition yesterday and I maintain that it is 1000000 times better than regular Terraforming Mars. And plays in about 1/6 of the time.
  • I don't like the original so any improvements are very welcomed

It basically does away with the pointless board and makes it a neat little tableau building game that doesn't drag on for hours on end.
  • Stop right now. I don't need another board game.
I started playing Divinus from Lucky Duck for review which is a hybrid digital legacy game.
In simple turns you roll dice and then add and subtract the numbers you get to allow you to claim tiles to build your own island, scoring based on collecting certain icons in your island. As you progress you add stickers to the game and your character box. Basic gameplay is quite simple and I'm interested in how the game will change with the legacy elements.

I also played the Dorfromantik board game on the weekend (local games day) - I was surprised at how well they managed to get the feeling of the video game, and to actually have it feels like a game and not just an activity.

And this is from me, who usually shies away from co-op board games

4 day convention here in Melbourne over Easter weekend.

Got 15 games played over the 4 days, quite a few new to me. Finally got to give Apiary a try, was good, a little lighter than my usual preference, but I think the multiple factions would give a reasonable amount of replayability.
  • "you've been wanting to get the Warhammer 40k Ultimate Starter Set for ages, would you like me to get you that for your birthday? "

    Yes please!

I've had a few space marines and Tyranid miniatures from one of the small starter sets for ages and enjoyed learning some basics and painting with these. Now excited about two full armies to paint and play with.

    Yay!
Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.
