Work - The pros and the cons...
  • So I don't think anyone on here doesn't know where it is I work. It's a source of polite banter from a few here and I enjoy that cos fuck it, I like my job and get a kick out of it. I'm happy. Skint, but happy. Every year there's a Thing that takes a group of staff and puts them on The Fast Track to whatever level is the next one within the company. Funnily enough, it's called Fast Track. Woo. So despite only being with His Master for a year (to the day, in fact), and many others applying for it (only 18 places for this particular one) who've been there for much longer than I have, I applied and got in. Woo yay etc. I fly down to Nottingham tomorrow night and it starts on Wednesday and I'll hopefully be seeing a few from here.

I am excited but also extremely nervous that I'll be found out for the impostor I truly am.
  • Nice one Gav, hope you nail it.
  • Break a leg mate. Well done.

  • You always come across as pretty into the job, so yeah, I don't think 'imposter' comes into it.
  • Congrats Gav. I don't have a fucking clue what you are on about tho.

  • Right, it looks like I'm going to be out of a job in three weeks time if they can't accomodate my request to go part time due to my access course. This is the fuck.

Isn't the onus on the employer now to come up with reasons why your job can't be done flexibly if you request certain hours etc? From your previous posts, your organisation does sound shit but you do have some rights here I think. Think revel may deal with this sort of thing.
  • I need to / want to move to Amsterdam. Does anyone know any decent international job boards? I am an IT person. Google seems to be producing duff results.
  • So something I put into place in my store is being sent out across the company as The Way Things Will Be Done. It would be nice if this were accompanied by a name check, but I think it's possibly a bit much to expect a regional manager to remember where an idea came from, especially when it's not his region, and he can pass it off as his own.
  • Retail sucks for that kind of thing. Most other industries it wouldn't be uncommon to expect a small bonus for coming up with an idea that goes company wide.
  • Well at least if everyone else hates having to change or undertake the additional processes they blame your regional manager and not you.

I'm only going to help @Tempy because we have conversations on the Dark Souls thread and I annoy him because it takes me AGES to move on to the next bit.

In some contracts it will state the employer has the right to renegotiate your hours if there is a lack of work and they may have to reduce your hours.  There is a flexible working right if you are a parent where you can request different hours or reduced hours. The employer can refuse at any point though.

The main point is how easy it would be to be able to fill the hours that she wouldn't be there. Is it going to cost the company a lot of money to recruit for someone full time if he goes?
Is he part of a specialist team or could they bring in someone else to make a big mistake and cost the company 25K.

Unfortunately it comes down to whether they think it is worthwhile keeping you on as an employee on a shorter contract. The argument being they will still benefit from having your skill set and they will save money on not paying you as much. they might look on it as a positive anyway. They might not want to replace you anyway as it will save them money.

There is no legal position you can use to back up your case.  If they decide they can only use you full time, then there isn't much you can do. Personally, if it meant only seeing you for 16 hours a week instead of 35, I'd jump at the chance sweetie.

  • I've been telling them for months I'll have to go down to 2 or 3 days and they've been accomodating up until now and it appears they just don't give a shit any more. My contract is only until december, but I've technically been temporary for going on three years now/
  • I think that any employment lawyer would see it that you would have the same rights as a permanent member of staff. They would find it difficult to prove you were a temp after three years of continuous employment.

The only thing you can do now is to ask for a meeting with management and HR and ask for something in writing from them. Technically if you are a 'tempy' then there is no reason why they can not reduce your hours.

  • I thought in this situation, though, they're entirely within their rights to refuse you part time work if they'd be unable to find someone to cover the other batch of part time hours?  In other words, if they'd find it easier to recruit another full time person, they can do that rather than trying to find someone who only wants part time or spreading the hours amongst other employees.

Especially difficult the more senior you get.  As soon as you start supervising or managing, people will expect the opportunities and salary that come with a full time post, so trying to find someone to do half your work would be very tricky.

Ergo, get applying for other actual part time jobs ASAP.
  • Well I find out on Tuesday so I'll start then. It is a ballache as I've been told by various people for about 8 months that 'it will be fine' and now 'it isn't fine'. Typical bollocks as per. We shall see.

  • To do with tracking data capture for new loyalty cards, and a better way of getting said data.
  • I had to do a presentation to a guy today who, within the company, with three other dudes, pretty much reports to the CEO. Eeek. Luckily, the chosen-at-random questions for each presentation group dealt mines one about games. And thankfully, I was to talk about "product knowledge". Smashed it. I think.

I am very tired and relieved. Onwards and upwards, folks.
  • I'm considering travelling to and then trying to get work in the UK area. I know the job situation in the Eurozone (yes I know it's not really a part of it) is rather dire to put it lightly but I was just wondering what my chances would be of picking up any sort of work in whatever area you live in. I've got retail experience so could do something like that or there's alway bar work, your bars love Australians right?

Just wondering if those sorts of casual jobs are still regularly advertised or not. Or even full-time gubbins in the IT world if anyone knows about that. I've been doing a bit of looking but it always seems to be "senior this" or "senior that".

Nice one Gav, I really am rooting for you to do well in this thing. Partially so I have someone to whinge at about the state of HMV but mainly because I think people like yourself are exactly what the company need, where as in the past they (like most retail) have had a habit of promoting the guy that has been there longest.

IT is still a relatively lucrative sector in the U.K. Milton Keynes (my area) is one of the best in the country for employment, in fact despite the recession unemployment has continued to fall as a whole. Offices, shops, and other ventures are being developed all the time here. It is also commutable to London and Birmingham (and anywhere in between).

It's as boring as all hell but work wise it is great.

Skerret's posting is ok to trip balls to and read just to experience the ambience but don't expect any content.
