Indeed- Lived and worked in manchester for a number of years running bars. I'd say it's got the same attitude as London, in the sense it's all spread out. And yes access to Liverpool and access to Wigan gets you to Ireland and Scotland in around 3 to four hours depending on connections.

London is full of foreigners, the Koreans wouldn't like it there!

  • I think I'll try for Manchester for now. I'm sure London would have a lot of stuff happening but the thought of working somewhere in the middle there and having to do that commute does not appeal to me all that much. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to travel down if I had to anyway.

Are there indoor tennis centers in Manchester? In case it's raining? What about indoor golf courses? Y'all.
  • You'll have to learn to embrace the rain, Shabby, or you'll be miserable here.
Indoor golf courses? Didn't know there was such a thing.
  • I lived & worked in Manchester for 6 years, absolutely loved it, great place as long as you avoid the obvious dodgy areas (and unless you're from one of them to begin with it's unlikely you'd ever set foot in them anyway). Doesn't rain all the time, would say it's a lot warmer than Newcastle but Newcastle gets more sun / has less constant grey clouds.

Manchester takes care of the north west tennis association - you can use the regional courts.

I only went pitch and put when I lived in Manchester, it was Somewhere Heath. I'm sure you'll work it out!

  • I know there are some covered driving ranges.
  • Edit: I didn't say any of that stuff M0stly harm13ss has quoted me as saying.

Occasionally (and only occassionally) I love my job. Last week I got to sack someone I couldn't stand after his 2 previous managers had failed to deal with him properly. Today I find out that his replacement is a part time model of the suicide girls type and have just spent a while looking at a selection of rather delightful shots of her in the altogether.

    I hate you....
  • Manchester is nice.
Are you sure you're not in Altrincham?
  • Yes i'm sure. I'm not in Manchester either but my missus lives there. It's nice you know.
  • I know - I was kidding.  I've lived in Manchester for about 14 years now.  Never heard described as nice before though, to be fair.

I'm ok with that right now.
  • Today is the two week date given that I should hear back about a job I had an interview for. No idea if ill hear tomorrow and no idea how the interview went.

Perfect job in video editing. I couldnt be more suited for it. Genuinely no idea if I came across well. Despite a fortnight of second guessing myself and thinking of a whole load of stuff I didnt say I think overall I said enough. I always come across as normal I think. Mainly because I am not a rapist. This wait is antagonising.

  • Lol.
Hope you hear something positive man.
I have a few friends in that field, it sounds a lot like my field.
CVs are there for facts, interviews are there to see if they want to go to the pub with you. Sounds like you nailed it in that respect.
  • Hmmm. I've been kicking myself this week for a possible cock-up on an application. Ad requested PDF portfolio, I sent a link to online portfolio - didn't have time to put together ANOTHER format... Think I'll ring them up and check if it's OK, or if they're being particular. Gah...
  • So, didnt get the job but " I'd like to offer you the opportunity for free lance work in the future and the possibly of a call back if things don't work out with our current crew "

Had to chase him up too, left hanging for 2 weeks when he must have known at least a week ago. Fuck sakes. Disappointed I didnt get the job but more pissed off with how no one ever seems to get back to you without needing to be chased.

    Ergghh.

  • Generally, I think if you've got the job you'll find out pretty quickly. If they tell you it'll be 2 weeks before they let you know your chances are pretty slim if you haven't heard after a week (probably only if they offered it to someone else and they turned it down).

It is annoying that some places don't even bother to get back to you at all if you've been unsuccessful.
  • Any thoughts on living/working in Manchester?

    You should do it.
  • Apologies, keyboard failure on ipad last night.
  • Writing grant applications for charities is not that exciting.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Do it while riding a shark.

I meant nice in that city way. You know? Sure over there's a homeless person feeding Cider to his dog, singing Lady Gaga sat in a puddle of his own, and other people's, bodily fluids but then over here there's a pretty decent restaurant. Nice.

Although getting them done is nice.

Anyhoo. My current paid employment is just chugging along. Part time, basically mornings only. Enough to cover rent and stuff and with some purse tightening, the missus and I are still getting by. As mentioned in the coffee thread (which I started), looking for a change of scene. Kinda been looking at cafe work, but don't want to quit what I'm doing just yet, at the same time I started looking at the coffee angle, I started volunteering for Helping Hoops (I'll be hitting you lot up for sponsorship when we do our next 24 hour shootout). Figured that it was just a good thing to be doing, but the opportunities seem to be opening quicker down the basketball route than I expected.

Am now volunteering in the office, hunting for grants, helping with whatever I can, and I can't tell you how much nicer it is to be working with a small group and for something that you're actually passionate about.

We've just run out of funding (hopefully briefly) for the thursday night group that I was helping with, so it's only Mondays now. I feel on a mission to get that funding back. (Thankfully, the exec director looks like he's already found replacement funding which should be a little more consistent. Hopefully that will mean the thursdays have only been dropped for 3 weeks.)

Feel better placed to put a time frame on leaving my current paid work, and also feel happy that working in basketball somehow isn't actually that far fetched.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Girl I'm seeing has- or had- been having some trouble at work and has felt the need to quit her job.

She worked in a museum. In recent months, her rich twat bosses (there's 3) have been placing their hands on her arse and making frequent albeit subtle advances. He's made passing comments about how one day she ought to be mature enough to date an older man, amongst many other things.

So she decided to hand in her notice. Upon going to collect the final pay packet, twat boss called her aside for a word. He first presented her with a brand new ipod, before suggesting that she ought to consider posing for a topless photo for him. He offered her 150 euros to do this, to which she obviously refused.

Is this grounds for one of those sexual harassment things? Is her case slightly undermined by the fact she accepted the gift of an ipod?

Edit- maybe relevant, maybe not. But their nickname for her in recent months has been Porno, which not surprisingly isn't the sort of name a girl likes to be called
  • Are you serious?
Of course that's sexual harrassment.  Pretty serious too, by the sounds of it.  She could take them to the cleaners, if she can provide evidence that will stand up at a tribunal.
  • That's what I thought too! She seems to think I'm making a big deal about nothing. I only just found out. She'd kept some of the finer details from me for fear of me being pissed off at her, for some reason (of course, I'm not). To make matters worse her parents are giving her a really difficult time over quitting her job and she's extremely reluctant to tell the the truth. Says her dad will go mental.

She's only 18 btw, and her bosses are 50-65. Not that it matters for anything but context, really.
