How long's their probationary period? Dunelm have workfare history, so I'd be worried about a shady deal with the Jobcentre that leaves a bunch of exploited probationers penniless during their benefits reapplications.

AMSPAR Medical Terminology exam was week before last and turned out significantly tougher than the half a dozen practice past papers we'd been given. Even passing isn't a guarantee in my mind but the anxiety is at least stretched out over a roughly 2 month wait. I have an interview for a proper medsec role on Wednesday. If I get that I'll go up a pay band and within the year hopefully break the 20k mark for the first time in my life. They made me cover these last two weeks for the person I'll be replacing if I get the job and it's been an enjoyable time dealing with patients over the phone and solving people problems.
  • Sounds good man! Don't spend all the extra cash on Starbucks.

In and of itself, man safe.

I'm just a wee bit dubious about them firing folk after five months, leaving you on JSA because you no longer qualify for PIP, as they take on the next batch. Mainly because of their workfare schemes and that [astonishingly high-tier] exam. They must have plenty of legit jobs, though.

Might just be that it's hard to find people to listen to quibblers all day, but you're a tried-and-tested badger.

Come on mate, this stuff isn't that expensive.
  • My interview with The Big Issue is this afternoon. I actually want this one, so fingers crossed.

I’ve been doing my due diligence, bit of background research on the people I’m meeting … and it looks like the Editor, who is up from London to do the interviews today, spent all weekend off his face at Glastonbury. Good to know.

Just walk in there, tell them the Star Wars poster story then lean back, put your feet up on the desk and ask them when they want you to start.
  • Take the pup with you. If you feel the interview going south just be like "aaaaaand if you don't employ me, he will starve. Can you live with that?"

    Best of luck mate.

  • I’m clocking off in a few minutes and heading home to take the pup out for a walk. A nice hour in the sunshine around the Botanics before I grab some lunch and head back into town. I’ll be the most relaxed bastard they meet for an interview today, that’s for sure.

Things have got desperate in the job department over here so I'm looking for any advice whatsoever. I'll try to be brief with my situation. Suffer with a rather debilitating chronic illness, in which I could never hold down even a part time job. Until early this year was getting benefits, got assessed, DWP have been a massive bunch of durr brains about it (whatashock) and I had my income taken off me. All reconsiderations were refused, so going to tribunal at some point about it. Family situation is also v.bad at home but I obviously have no way of moving out/DOING ANYTHING without any income (I do make money from YT but it's nowhere near enough atm).

I've volunteered the since 2006, always at actual places until I got too unwell a couple of years ago. Been doing home volunteering work which has been customer support for a charity via emails and social media. I can get a fair amount of this done during the week which has lead me to look for similar paid roles but there seems to be absolutely naff all. It's all rather depressing but I don't really know realistically what my options are at this point. I feel like I might have more luck approaching companies individually offering my "services" than looking on job sites. Again, any info regarding the type of work/working from home would be massively appreciated as I feel a bit lost and bummed out about the whole thing atm.
  • I don't know if it's appropriate given your illness, forgive my ignorance, but is Piano Teaching not an option? Just as a top up until you can find something elsewhere? If you've been volunteering then you may be best off approaching places, the kind of roles you are going for may not be advertised a lot (but definitely look up creative industry job websites, they almost exclusively circulate PR and communications jobs through those separate channels)
  • Good luck with the Big Issue, Pop.  I'm clearly getting mixed up because I thought you missed out on that a few weeks back.

Actual piano teaching isn't an option, not qualified enough for grade work and my illness doesn't go well with keeping very specific appointments. That's what I was thinking regarding going through other channels because it seems like there are people that do work from home on certain days doing things I could do but then those roles don't seem to be advertised, just tacked onto other roles.

  • What do you want to do?

Or are you coming from the position that you don't know and that anything flexible will suffice?
