Work - The pros and the cons...
  • As mentioned, I reached out yesterday to folk still in the casino game. Ended up with 2 gaming managers and a pit boss from that casino messaging the gm about me, and the GM from the Edinburgh casino (who i was in training school with back in 2004) messaging him as well, and offering me a reference.

Must've worked, the agency just called this morning, wanting me to go to an interview on the 25th. Need to do a competitor visit, and a swot for the Berkeley. Fingers crossed lads. Even if careco was secure, i'd like to go back. My c.v. starts with that casino, that's the point i can trace my career back to, everything before that was daft wee part time jobs, going to college etc. i'll have went full circle. Funnily enough, the reason i left casinos was it looked like it'd take over a decade of dealing to get into management, i wasn't willing to wait. still taken over a decade, but it's been a decade spent gaining experience in other jobs. funny that.

The hours will be a change, but it's 4 ten hour shifts a week, instead of 5 eight hours shifts, gives me a day back to try and have a life. Ironically, I had a better balance when i was doing those fucked up cinema shift patterns, was able to see my gf a few times a week, see my son twice a week, and still get doctors appointments and haircuts etc. In my current job, it's work then wean then work then wean then work then wean, i have zero time to myself.

And it'll be back to a steady wage (a fairly tasty one as well), and back to engaging with punters, which is my biggest strength, and something i enjoy.

Just need to get through the next couple of weeks, keep my job here, then get this and tell careco to collectively sook my pipe.

Dante, voicemail backed up by email, go back to sleep, then call again once you wake up. nothing else you can do.

  • Not got the job I applied for which I am currently doing cover for. At the very least I have it until the 3rd of March, which is nice I guess. Ho hum.

Boo but agreeing with HBJ on the hanging in there. Something good will open up in the workplace for you soon enough.
  • *reads up* ah fuck, sorry HBJ, didn’t mean to barge in on your far more significant issues. Hope the Casino stuff works out for you!

Don't be daft, no apology needed at all!
  • Aye, this is a good place for us all to share our work-related worries (as well as wins). Big issues, small issues, whatever. There’s room for it all.

I’ve gotta travel all the way to fucking Cambridge next week for the second time in a month, just for a two hour meeting. Fuck that redeye flight in the morning, quite frankly. The last place I want to be at rush hour is Stansted fucking airport. I’ll probably come back with coronavirus another really annoying cold.

Sad about this, as it's been fun sharing an office with Temps and winking at him over our monitors. I'm glad I was at least able to get you in for the cover, hopefully it'll serve to at least nudge open another door somewhere eventually.

Is Stansted that bad?? Don;t they have a train station almost directly under it?? I'm sure I used to use it when in Helsinki

Also, sorry Temps, but hey it's been some experience, I'm finding the biggest barrier to me getting positions recently has been the fact I've not worked for so long

Aye, nothing you can do. Sad thing is I can literally do the job. I am doing it right this very second!

I get their justification, but it is still a bit frustrating. Oh well.

It’s super-busy and it’s designed with a retail focus instead of a transport focus.

So yeah, you get off your train and make your way up into the airport. And you’ve checked in online and you have no hold luggage, because you’re a pro. But then you’re funnelled into a winding path through LOUD! GLOSSY! SHOUTING! RETAIL! Like a fucking cross between Oxford Street and Ikea. And it’s FULL of people who don’t know where the fuck they’re going or why. And then you’re guided through the exact same thing again but for food and drink. And all you want is to get from the train station to the gate for your flight, but you can’t because first you have to navigate this artificially elongated winding back on itself RETAIL PATHWAY crowded with dawdling tourists gawping at everything like a muppet in a new city, while your senses are being assaulted by perfume sellers, watch brand and whisky adverts all at the visual and scent equivalent of TURNED UP TO 11.
  • Heh, I just did the graphics layout for a Monkey Shoulder retail unit in Stansted, I don't think it will be installed yet though.
It has "OMG" in big letters on an orange background about 1.5m tall on all four sides of a pillar.

    What is shouty about that?

Ah fair enough, this was almost 20 years ago, it was pretty quiet and getting through it was super quick, so quick in fact I almost forgot earlier which airport it was I used

Heh. It’s all especially epilepsy-inducing at morning rush hour time. You’ve caught the six or seven am flight down from Glasgow, your eyes are barely open, you’re already worrying about catching your train onward and suddenly you’re forced into BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG SHOP BUY STUFF territory.
  • Yeah I can well imagine.
All competition though innit, if one brand pulls it back they disappear amongst the others.

It's big, big money as well in terms of sales there and brand recognition later.
  • Evils of capitalism, innit.
  • Pays my mortgage though ;)
  • So.. I've always counted up my own commission and passed it to accounts for paying. I've always been trusted with this and I've never abused the system. I don't claim for trade cars or anything sold by anybody else etc. etc. I also keep records on my work computer which can be viewed by anyone if they ever wanted to check. No problem.

It's come to my attention from one of my colleagues whose dad is one of the managing partners that he wants to start checking them.. not a problem of itself as I'm not up to no good but still a little disappointing that the trust seems to have gone after 20 years.

So here's the thing. Do I carry on handing them in myself to accounts and let him check them with the accounts dept if he wants to and pretend I don't know or just email him along with accounts and let him know that I know?

I suspect his son could be stirring a little too..

    Advise requested please.

Owners son, maybe priming himself to take over, wants to do due diligence and full audit the company?? Possibly someone is abusing something so wants to look over everything?? Maybe just simple stuff like profits down so wants to see where any leaks might be??

Easy for me to say, but I'd try not to take it personally unless it is obviously personal, do you know for sure that it isn;t also happening to everyone else??

edit: Adding him to the mail seems a bit passive aggressive, if you feel the need to do something, go full aggressive and ask him straight out if he wants to be cced in on the same

That would be my first thought and I would imagine they have an idea who, but in an effort to disguise the motive, or to appear impartial, they are doing a blanket check.
  • Absolutely brutal day. Had to refuse to let a mum pick her kiddo up as dad had turned up with a court order giving him full custody with immediate effect.

    Didn't go down too well.
  • Jaysus tiger, you are not paid enough. That must be horrific to be in the middle of. Poor kid as well.
