I was a little disappointed with The Punisher.  That intensity that Bernthal brings to the role worked so well in short bursts throughout season two of Daredevil.  Stretched over ten episodes it just became a little tiresome.  I enjoyed it overall, just not quite as much as I was expecting to.

I thought it was dull, character was far too unlikable, and it had a shitty pro gun message.
  • I didn't really see the pro-gun message others did.  It's not like anyone wielding a gun came out unscathed, almost always as a result of someone else wielding a gun.

It's no more pro-gun than a million other films or TV series, unless I managed to miss that element entirely.

No, it has a very deliberate couple of scenes promoting guns. Karen in particular.

Jon Bernthal really does make a magnificent Punisher.  S1 finished this afternoon.  The last three episodes back to back was a pretty grueling experience.

Finished that this week, enjoyed it too. Was refreshing to have something with no super-power bollocks. Thought the arguments for and against guns were fairly balanced, and if anything veered more towards anti-gun.

My sister now lives in Texas and it’s crazy how quickly she’s become indoctrinated towards the pro-gun stance. Similar arguments to Karen in this, like it or not this is how a lot of people over there think.

I found Punisher a bit grim and gruelling overall. I felt like I was watching torture porn at times.

Man, I've become desensitised to things on TV.
  • I'm up to season five of Weeds. I think it's some kind of self abuse.
  • But Mary-Louise Parker is lovely in it.  First three seasons at least are epic tier tv in my book.  Seen this bit yet?

  • Yup, that's before they give up all pretence of trying to lampoon US suburbia and move wholesale onto Mexicans.

Parker doesn't really do it for me, maybe it's the character. Alanis Morissette plays a sexy doctor, though, which is nice.

    Showguns.

You're basing this on "a couple of scenes" out of what must total around 11 hours of TV? Do you have evidence of nefarious influence or did you just find it a bit distasteful? I'm not advocating gun ownership for a moment but don't understand why this is being selected as particular problematic.

I was Zardozed as a kid by the romanticism of violence in Leone's films and the Bonds, but I hate guns in reality. They're just so much a part of entertainment now.
  • I doubt anyone here is whooping up gun ownership.

I know, I'm just saying that I'd find it really hard (vocally also) to talk down guns when I love this sort of business...

I should hate guns wholesale, and I realise how and why I've been conditioned, but I don't.

I have no evidence of anything. I just didn't like what it seemed to present. I particularly disliked the politician who was anti-gun and then was almost killed and was "OMG I've been so wrong about this". Seemed heavy handed, blatant and otherwise pointless. I also just don't like Karen. There's something odd about The Punisher's defender in the media being a pro gun journalist. It doesn't sit right (contrary as that may seem), especially with all the gun killings in the US. I realise they have an audience, I just personally don't like it.

Whenever I hear a police officer talking in support of routinely arming the Police in the UK, I ask them how they’d feel about most of their colleagues being armed. The debate usually comes to a halt pretty swiftly.

Great little run of documentaries telling the story of hit music from the perspective of those that worked the strings behind the scenes going from Rock and Motown to the present day.
Even when covering artists I don't like (Katy Perry) it is very interesting to see the inner workings. Classic top notch BBC 4 doc that the BBC don't tell you about.
  • Finished watching The Sinner last night. Good performances and script, but the plot wasn't up to scratch in the end. As with any mystery, it relies on drip feeding revelations throughout, but the pace always felt forced.

It wanted to take some time before

  • Fargo S3 done. I assumed it wouldn't topple S2, but it wasn't too far off.  Three consistently good seasons so far.  The bit with the mug in the office was delightful.
