In a world all to often polluted with characters doing little else but spout exposition, while we smash-cut around the globe from one set-piece to the next, this series was the perfect antidote. At last. Ambient Science Fiction. 

It was glacially slow, stunningly beautiful, and wonderfully acted. Top marks go to all the kids, who were just fantastic with their performances, and having Philip Glass compose the soundtrack was just the icing on the cake. I loved every minute of it.
 
And it wrong footed me too. I was three or four episodes in, and convinced I was watching an arthouse version of The Twilight Zone. Every episode it's own little novella, with the town as the connecting thread. So glacial was the pace, that I was half way through the series before the penny dropped that no, this is actually one over-arching narrative, and it's going to resolve itself. 

And boy did it resolve itself. Tears rolled down my face in the final episode, and credit has to go to Jodie Foster for directing such a beautiful thing.
I loved that nothing was explained away. Everything just was. Things that were beyond comprehension for the characters were left beyond comprehension for the audience, and you just had to accept that these are things that happen. I don't know why they happen, or how they happen, but they happen. 
Bit like life really.

It doffed it's cap to everyone from Andrei Tarkovsky to Rod Serling, but still managed to remain very much it's own thing, and that's no mean feat in these cookie-cutter times we live in.
Some people will hate it, and that's ok. It's definitely not going to have mass appeal, but I think the people with whom it resonates, will be thankful for it's existence. A strange and wonderful thing where it doesn't matter what's actually in the mystery box, and a masterclass in time-fuckery that the writers of Westworld should be locked in a room and made to study.
