I know. If it was physical the war would be over....they'd have my money. I was disappointed when I realised the 360 port was JP only.

I was able to get TGM1 working on one of the MAME builds at one point.

Will you be reviewing this? It's on my watch list as Tilly was interested in the trailer, but I'm keen to know how adult the Teen Themes are.
  • I've played it, yeah. Maybe 'teen themes' refers to the fluid sexuality of the characters - e.g. you might swap the traditional roles in a story around so two men get married or have an affair, or a man and a woman marry then he dies then she marries a woman.

Otherwise you get scenarios like X has an affair with Y, then Z kills X. Or X and Y get married then Y dies so X kills himself. There's also a version of the Oedipus story - X kills his father then accidentally marries his mother.

It's all played for laughs, though, and there's nothing graphic or explicitly sexual.

A physical version would be a deal maker. Though I’d feel like a right muppet swapping the Effect Connected cart for the Grand Master one.

    Caved in. £6.

Playing in MAME is deceptive because the arcade game has several modes that can only be accessed via button press sequences. They are all laid out in this port.

I've never got on with Sega's Tetris so I find this tough going as it is based on Sega's take on the game with its rotation and lock scheme. No hard drop. One piece preview. The lock delay is short. It seems the best tactic at higher levels is to stack higher in the middle to help with dealing with that.

Will take some focussed play to make progress.

Up to about level 400 and some I was thinking “with some practice I could do this”. But it keeps going. Level 999 then the fucking pieces go invisible during the credits. Bugger that. Wow.

    The invisible thing is insane.

If I didn't know better I'd just say it was fake. Bonkers.

He did it live at a GDQ. Less than 20 people in the world have completed that with a GM grade awarded apparantly.

The credit sequence is randomised so you can't even use it to gauge how long you have to go.  A fucking evil game.

Well, I'll stick with my own little victories. Got my first SS rank in TEC, in Quick Play. (Choose any stage, best score in 30 lines.)

It's one of the modes where you can't game over, but still. I'll take what I can get.

I fancy trying to 1 life TCE in the main journey/campaign mode. I reckon it's pretty doable. There's a couple of sticking points here and there but I don't think it would be super hard to do.

Starting to get the hang of TGM. I hadn't realised you can rotate a shape before it appears at the top of the pit. Indeed, the game isn't possible without that once it starts to speed up. Got a few grade 1 games. Havent got an S grade yet but I'm starting to "get" this game.

Yeah. Once I started using it the game starts to click. I consulted the online manual - something I rarely do - but I was completely mystified as to how anyone could deal with the brutal difficulty. Quite quickly it's even impossible to rotate a straight line to the vertical position after it spawns - so it's why I went to the manual in the hope I'd find an answer - and I did. It changes everything.

There's a double sized piece mode that initially looks easy but it isn't because the piece movement isn't scaled up and you can fuck yourself up so quickly it's hilarious. The pieces morph into groups of normal sized squares once they lock into place. There's no cascade or anything - the squares stay in place - but it's an interesting mode. It's an option in the 5min caravan mode.
