The Star Wars thread - "Chewie, we're home."
  • I've just watched TRoS. I feel unclean. Need to rewatch The Mandalorian again to wash all that unwholesomness away.
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map
  • My wife mentioned that’s the only one she’s never seen when we were browsing the d+ library the other night. I don’t think I’ve seen it since the disappointing cinema trip in 2005. I’m torn.

  • Ah yes. Silly me.

  • RotS is a better film than tRoS.

Perhaps ‘better’ wasn’t the right word to use.
Substitute in ‘Marginally less awful in some ways’
  • Chunky is better than sludgy, yes.

I quite like Kylo. I dont think his potential as a character was met across the trilogy but I'm pretty sure he is the only character in the entire trilogy with an arc.

As the trilogy progressed I got to like the character more but in this first one he's presented as the next Vader and that simply is very silly.

  • Had a cool lightsaber and hat though
  • I started watching force awakens last night...it was getting late so wasn't bothered to watch something I'd stay up all night to finish, and thinking it would look great in 4k.
However each time i watch it it just gets worse. The more you see the JJ 'tricks'. It got away with it when it was new and reminded you that star wars could be fun, but more and more of it grates now.

  • The X-Wing scene on the planet is fantastic in Force Awakens. One long tracking shot.

I still like TFA. Yes it was ANH plot but was well paced had great scenes (as Chopper points out) and setup a promising trilogy. But then we got what we got :-(

Some of us feared lazy original trilogy reduxes after TFA. We'd settle for that in retrospect.

I blanked out the mess that was that 2nd one. It had some spectacular looking bits like the warp jump and the red sand but I don't remember the story. Some rubbish about running out of fuel and a highly contrived mission to a casino?

Brilliant, if only for the cast...

  • I liked the theoretical idea of kylo Ren. In a way he’s set up as a potential dark side luke. - rough around the edges but clearly talented. It’s worth remembering that Luke is pretty whiny. Pretty convenient for him that his adoptive parents were murdered.

The problem is that it’s an inevitably unsatisfying conclusion. (Unless it goes all the way up to ep 12 - which is how long Darth Vader got to be okay - I don’t think we ever saw Kylo Reach his full depths but to do that you’d need to kill off Rey or Finn or Poe)

I know ren killed his dad but that’s slightly limited by the fact you know Harrison Ford is a grumpy knob and as an Act it’s not really damaging to kill a space hobo.

I'm still shocked at how bad a film Rise of Skywalker is. I mean I wasn't expecting it to be good but it really outdid itself.
  • It was almost impossible to make a good concluding film from where the second one ended up. There's a cartload of unforced errors it makes ofc, but it would have been an act of genius to turn the trilogy into something satisfactory at that point.
  • Yeah that is a huge problem with TLJ that is often missed in all the other issues.
It leaves no threads dangling .

    Say What now?

The New Order is being run by Kylo, no longer Snoke. The Youth has fully taken over at the end of Jedi. Kylo becomes in effect the new Emperor.
The New Rebellion can start over under the small group at the end.
There is the whole new plotline of who is really funding the war. In effect the arms dealers become the real new empire. I thought this was much more interesting than just going back to the empire again. The Galaxy in star wars could have become a whole lot bigger with this.
The Force is everywhere, Rey can start a whole new way of trainging that isnt the Jedi
And we never got the epci Rose / Finn sex scene that the whole movie was clearly building to.

I'm not going to get into a whole load of debate over whether it was good or bad, but last jedi was clearly meant as a cleaner to start things over with fresh ideas (whether the fans liked them or not is a whole nother debate) In Hindsight, Force Awakens should have been a stand alone to reset the table and get everyone back on board (which it did to be fair) and than Last Jedi starts its own new trilogy.

  • Also trying to sidestep the good/bad or whether i agree any of those are interesting points... ;)

would you not agree that at the end of part2 of a trilogy is the wrong time for those changes and resets? for those points to make sense, part 3 would have to be "...then many years later" and introduce new bad guys and good guys.

  • Those arent really dangling threads.
They are potholes and unsatisfactory conclusions.
  • re-reading and i see you do mention last jedi as the start of it's own trilogy. this touches on why i don't understand how people defend TLJ... it's not so much that all of the concepts of the story are terible, it's just they really don't fit what went before or leave room for the trilogy to complete.
if the entire trilogy had been built around some of the ideas of TLJ then it could have been good - luke rejecting the force, a new kind of jedi, a new kind of bad guy...but just shoving it in there after TFA was clearly doing something different is what grates the most i think.
