Just bought a couple of JPN Megadrive STGs by Toaplan... Twin Hawk and Hellfire. One hori and one vertical. Look OK. Haven't really got into Megadrive shmups so looking forward to giving these a go.
Dipped my toe PC Engine wise on the Wii VC. Some very nice games - Gate of Thunder is great and there's a lovely Twinbee one too. Would have been quite something to have owned one of those in the 90s. Given the variety on offer I think I'd prefer a PCE to a NeoGeo.
Messing about with Caladrius today. Anyone spend time with this? There seems to be some odd bonus called a "shame break" that involves the clothes of your character shown at the side of the screen getting torn - very strange.
I never really played Raiden all that much until I picked up Raiden III on PS2. That entry seems to attract a lot of criticism but I played a lot of it.
I thought about getting it for Saturn but it's pricey - well North of £100.
I understand the rank rules and it's generous 1up regime make it a delicate balancing act involving suiciding at the right time. The impression I have of it is that this balance that is so admired might have been a mistake by the developers that has worked out just right.
Only other way to play is PCB or MAME I think - don't think it got released on any other platform. Always suspect of MAME though when it comes to the more manic games as an accurate experience.
Jesus - £170 for a copy now seems to be the going rate. This result will only push it up.
Saturn version seems to have various display options (inc. TATE thankfully), arcade and arranged soundtracks, and a mode to turn the enemy bullets red. There's even an option to switch on English menus (if you can find it!).
I've actually spent some proper quality time with Saturn Radiant Silvergun for the first time this evening. I've had this game for years (yikes - maybe 18).
This is a bit good - it didn't really grab me back when I first got and I just ended up credit feeding through it to see the sights. It has grabbed me now though. Playing it in arcade mode.
Have to say - the options screen is one of the most attractive I've ever seen in a game - gorgeous. Forgot how nice a job Treasure did with this port.
Jesus RSG is tough. It's prone to snaffle all your lives in a few seconds. Not one of those games that wears your live stock down over a level this one.
levels are short but fairly brutal - though once you learn a trick to get through (i.e.. the "right" weapon selection) then it starts to look manageable.
I love RSG. Had the actual arcade edition in the past and loved playing with 3 buttons. Using 3 means using all the weapons becomes almost like playing a musical instrument!
