Never spent any time with Battle Garegga. It's usually in the top 2 or 3 of the shmups.com annual poll.

You can play level 1 of it as a bonus in the 2nd release of Soukyugarentai for Saturn. I've also played it a wee bit via MAME. The Saturn port apparantly has a lot of features like a pink bullet mode etc.  It's bloody expensive though. Will be interesting to hear what this version is like,.

Was unpacking some boxes from out most recent (a year ago) move and found the model kits I bought in Japan for the Xevious ship and the DoDonPachi DaiOuJou ship - gutted I missed getting the R9 model - it's such a nice piece.

Its way better than the Saturn version, M2 don't muck about with their ports.

    That's true.

Futari is a lovely game - don't know if it's accurate but as a port it is high quality and stuffed with features. They did a nice job with 360 Daytona too.

  • Seen a few Raiden V comments in here.  Still a bit expensive for my tastews, turned it down in latest Steam sale for about £16.

    Worth it?

Been getting some mobile love on switch with Sine Mora and those DC titles recently

Played a bit of BL Futari last night. It feels great. It's slightly more manic that 1.5 but for some reason feels a bit easier. Results in a more enjoyable game. More bullets but the speed is a bit lower. The gem counter changes every 3000 - not 2000 as I posted earlier and you get an audio cue when it happens. Splendid game. But need to get back to Gigawing 1CC.

  • Nice! I didn’t like DSII as much as the first.

Battle Garegga arrived. Busy decorating house and shit, can’t wait to play it. Menus in Jap? May have to take up your offer of a pic of english menus, Nana.

Yeah I've had II before and like you say its not as good as I. I really like 1, I know it gets a lot of flak for being too easy but I really enjoy it.

Will bag some pics of the English menus once I finish my session on ROTTR. My disc Garegga came today as well!

Title on the right is the Shooting Love 10th Special Pack which has Delta Zeal and XIIzeal on.

A lot of the 360 shmups seem to be on the up in price so trying to top my collection off sooner rather than later.

I've the platinum edition and would get this if I hadn't been spending so much of late...reckon this is a good price for the special edition

    Stripped down shmupping then.

Was playing a bit of Centipede yesterday. I have an Atari 7800 - very much a failed console. But it has rock solid ports of Atari's old games. Have been playing Asteroids (which is built into the console in the PAL region) which is the best home version I've played - XBL shambles included - and Centipede.

Centipede is an odd one. it's a game I've never consciously sought to play as it is a very basic shooter but there is something about it. It's a game that you will never just play once - I found myself hitting restart over and over again. Maybe it's the way the playfield changes as mushrooms get left behind. Maybe it's the behaviour of the centipede itself - the way it splits every time you hit it. The changing playfield and its behaviour give the game an organic and unpredictable feel. Very compulsive. The spider is a constant source of irritation though.

It has quite a bit of variety with the other enemies too -amazing for an 1980 game really. I've never played the original in the arcade with trak ball control  -imagine it would be a compulsive experience.

Any thoughts on the older shooters like this one?

Hated Centipede if Im honest, even in the arcade. Loved Missle Command which was trackball and thats one you just can't replicate on a home machine - the trackball is essential to how it plays.

Robotron 2084 was a must in the arcade, no amount of emulation can replicate the joy of a proper twin stick cab. One of my all time faves.

I was pretty hot at Galaxian as a kid, often bagging the high score.

    Other favourites from memory:

Moon Cresta - loved the docking mechanic if the 3 ships and how each one being destroyed meant you essentially gained firepower but became more vulnerable as your craft got bigger.

Pheonix - loved this game! The cool animation as your ship moved, the multitude of colours, the different stages (5?) culminating on the UFO type boss where you gradually shot through his craft. I often wonder if this was the first kinda shmup boss but no idea if thats true.

I'm sure there's loads more but memory and all that.

Actually Ikari Warriors! The specialist sticks where the tops twisted (LS-30's I think) again can't be replicated on home systems. Interestingly on the arcade scene these sticks are highly sought after, often fetching quite good money.

Phoenix would be my favourite classic era shooter. Loved the wave format and the boss - also the gurgly , quirky presentation.  I can't think of an earlier game that had a boss.

Moon Cresta was good but a lot deaths felt cheap.  Phoenix follow up Pleides wasn't bad either.

Fond of Sega's Astro Blaster too  - that's worth a look. One of my favourite 2600 games - Megamania - is based on it - still playable today as its graphics are solid and it loops every 8 waves with each loop changing enemy movement and speed - impressive for a 2600 game.

Never too fuseed by Astro Blaster but loved Megamania, go figure.

There was something odd/unique about Astro Blaster but I can't remember what *off to google*

Excellent re Futari.  Black label is DLC - as far as I remember it is mis-spelled (think it's Black Lavel in the XBL shop) Highly recommend BL - it's just so enjoyable.

Astro Blaster is rock hard. Your laser can overheat and you can run of fuel and it's game over whether you have lives left or not........more enjoyable via MAME than via pumping coins!  :)

There's a pile of scoring secrets that are quite novel - well ahead of its time.

    *googled*

It was the synthesised speech my brain was trying to recall.

Also the main craft looked a bit like a Battlestar Galactica craft.

Long story short, had a cashflow crisis (well missus did) so sold the boxset. My finances turn round quite quick though so been splurging.

If Im honest, the box set is lovely but owning it made me realise I prefer the individual releases.

I still have my Futari anyway, just fancied the LE as it was a good price.

LE is not region free though is it?

The seller is a guy on the sega saturn uk forum which is how I was made aware of it - I asked him if it was region free and he said yes. That could be wrong though.....I didn't think it was.
