Raiziel's Skyrim thread
  • True, but I still love 'em all to bits.

  • Think I managed about 5 mins of NV before deciding I'd seen enough of the current Fallout universe to last me a lifetime. New engine next gen will no doubt see me back.

Was planning on re-purchasing Skyrim for the DLC as I sold it as soon as I'd platinum'd it, guess that won't be happening now.
  • But Beth don't do new engines though. Only old engines re-jigged to look like new engines.

This latest DLC is a curious move too. Seems too throwaway a package, and nothing that mods can't do better.

It was just a little project worked on by a small team and doen't count as one of the mooted (three?) larger expansions, of which Dawnguard was the first.
    Get schwifty.
  • The bugs in Skyrim were patched pretty well for them. Most I saw were just funny.

NV on the other hand was terrible, I gave up because each loading screen was a gamble that it would or wouldnt crash, and there were a lot of loading screens!!!

An announcement of a new Fallout will make me sex wee a bit in my pants though.
  • Then it will turn out to be an MMO and I will be sad

Not a chance.  Fallout 4 (set in Boston?) on next gen platforms is a very exciting prospect.

  • Boston would be good, setting it in a more autumnal location could look beautiful.
  • And then they'll replace S.P.E.C.I.A.L with health! stamina! and rad! points instead.

  • Have started playing this in earnest now, having avoided it since getting it last xmas, due to my current interest in high-fantasy gubbins.  It's pretty good, but quite overwhelming at first - especially with all the unpronounceable names.  I think I'm going to go down the wizard route (is that possible, to specialise?  I know so little about this game), but it's pretty satisfying burying a two handed battleaxe into dudes.  I'm level 5 atm.

Yesterday, I saw a Mammoth levitate and then when I snuck up on a troll-looking guy who was out walking his other hairy elephant (he seemed pretty non-plussed that his mega-follicled pachyderm had just flown into the air) I got doubled teamed by him and his pet - launching me about 500ft in the air.

    What an odd game.

The shocking thing is Obsidian put Bethesda's bug habits to shame when NV came out.
As in New Vegas was buggier than Fallout 3? It's the engine that's shot to shit, no other open world games are anywhere near as broken as Bethesda games.

    Double post!

I played about 10 hours of NV and not a single bug.  I may go back to it, but it seems more of a chore and less interesting than my adventures in the DC wasteland.

Depends how long you play but you get enough skill points to be very proficient at all three styles at the same time if you want. It's when supporting skills like Alchemy, Enchanting or Smithing start sucking up your points you run out of them.

I went for pure magic (and a little bit of archery) myself. Just remember to really stock up on magicka potions since if you don't have any magicka you're a bit fucked. Naturally. Don't worry about magicka regeneration either. It's all about increasing your maximum magicka since during combat your regen is a snail's pace no matter what.

And get the dual casting perk in the Destruction tree fairly quick. Followed by the perk that makes dual casted spells cause knock downs. Insanely useful that one.
  • I duuno, I found magic regen pretty handy; it'd often just give the edge needed to win sometimes.

The game's really designed with specialisation in mind, it can get pretty difficult if you try to do everything because of the way enemies level.

It's useful if you stack it i'm sure. But I just find the blunter route of just piling on more magicka, more effective. Also helps with casting the more powerful spells.

Anyone make good use of the dragon shouts? I never did. More often than not I'd trigger one by accident then it'd be timed out when I actually needed it.
  • Some of them, yeah.  The time slow one was really useful a couple of times where I was having a hell of a problem getting past things, fire/ice shouts were a staple for combatting harder foes and the summon dragon one was just fun.

There was one that turned you into some sort of ghost so you took no damage but could still dish it out. The clear skies one was handy too because fuck rain.

I was 100% sneak/archery though, so never found one that helped with that. By about halfway through if an enemy saw me let alone laid a finger on me it meant I'd screwed something up.

So was I, the archery is great. I used the ghost one when fighting dragons, as I had no elemental protection on my armour. The recharge time on it was pretty rapid.
  • The one that grounds the Dragons is really useful. I liked the one that sent people flying to, I beat some mean bastards with that just launching them off a mountain.

I'm a sneaky archer as well, found Aura Whisper one of the most useful shouts. Being able to see if anyone was in the next room or around a corner was a big help in dungeons.
  • Wasn't there a "throw voice" one, too? That's pretty much designed for sneaky types.
  • Yeah, haven't used that as much as I probably should have. Again, it works a treat in dungeons against unsuspecting bandits and the like when long range archery is out.
  • Just wish those kill cams weren't so damn glithcy.

Maybe it is but using it just put everyone on alert straight away checking wherever you'd sent it.
  • Spent last night getting my arse repeatedly kicked in Fort Greymoor. I had no problems with every bandit except one bandit thug at the top of a tower who just kept killing me over and over. Frustrating, but then I went and killed a bandits dog and murdered a woman called Agnes and felt better about it all.
This is gradually getting its claws in now.

What was the issue? Health stacking? I despise the Bethesda approach to difficulty scaling. Or perhaps it's an engine thing. The difficulty of Old World Blues actually made me hate the whole New Vegas experience for a long while.
  • He just seemed to have a massive amount of health and take off loads of mine with every hit.

I have a massive hankering to return to this now for a new epic (no fast travel) playthrough.  I wanted to wait until all the dlc had been released, but the way things are going that could be a year away.
