Latest Ray track has dropped (we're up to four now I think), they're all pretty good so far. There seems to have been an attempt to smooth off one or two rough edges here (compared to his recent output; he has dabbled in the past). The duet jousting is a bit half baked, and the video is the opposite of what the coolkids might call 'straight fire', which of course adds to the charm. Loving this, thanks in no small part to the chorus:
Anyone care to have a stab at deciphering the four four two line early on? "You're as hot as a [something] four four two"? I'm guessing it's not 'late 90s treble winning'.
Maybe it's cutler? Hot as a cutler's 442. Like someone who [checks Google] makes, sells or repairs knives. And a '442' might be the instrument they sharpen the metal with, ergo it runs hot.
She's great. Album's a grower too, I should listen to some of her older stuff.
Had this on this morning. Three greats deserving of muchos respect, but Clark is alpha dad.
This song. As soon as he starts it you hear a "yeah" from Earle and an "I love this song" from Van Zandt. It's arguably the best thing Clark's ever written and therefore (sorry guys) better than anything they've penned themselves. TVZ wrote and recorded his fair share of stone cold classic songs but Clark is next level on his best day. I'll stand on Earle's coffee table in my Reebok classics and say that.
And the in-between patter on this album is tops too. TVZ sounds a bit addled, with a career drinker's lilt, but he's got the room in his pocket with this grisly tale:
Me again. Listening to Dublin Blues reminds me of a chef's kiss segment at the end of this, which is the best country music documentary ever made imo (apologies to Ken Burns, he gave it a bloody good go). If you've never seen it and you visit this thread it's well worth 90 minutes of your life.
I'll watch that Rich Hall one at the weekend between playing cowboy in red dead, ta (think I may have caught bits of it at the time). Dark Legend thread it is for me and Tour Bus then.
And yeah, Dublin Blues was an all timer the first time I heard it I think, before I knew who Guy Clarke was. It was the only track of his I had in my general country playlist.
He plays it with a capo on 2nd fret but only covering the first 5 strings, sneaky. Gives that drone low E, never would've figured that out. That's me this lunchtime then.
Miranda Lambert live in New York. Actually less than 24 hours ago. This is why America is being utterly fucked by the coronavirus, obvs.
Not a great set, but the high points are worth it. I love the sixties inflected version of Mama’s Broken Heart she opens with, and she brings real dive bar vibes to Tequila Does.
