The PS1 is still good for its 2D shmups , rhythm games, import oddities and top tier 3D games such as Wipeout3SE and R4. It was a console very much of its time. Retro not nostalgia. Some good games on Andy's list but not many I'd hang my hat on as all-timers. Actua Soccer (pedantic hat on, sorry) was only good for a very limited period, imo.

I do revisit titles that you might consider have been surpassed, because often their simplicity is what’s attractive. Rally Cross is still my favourite arcade rally game, and I don’t imagine anything will ever surpass it. You mentioned the original Metal Gear Solid as being something you wouldn’t go back to, but the later titles tend to play quite differently. I’m happier playing Colony Wars than most other space shooters. If the emulation is good (which would be a first for N64) then this would be worth picking up for the HDMI output alone.

I think it also got a general graphical brush up - little improvements that the PAL version got.
