GOTY 2017 - bestest gaming year
  • Weird - I seem to remember you being super up for Nier. You not got round to it yet? Or did I remember wrong?

Still desperate to play it and it's very much on my list. Sure I'm going to love it.

Waiting for a PSN sale really.

  • It's in the Black Friday sale but still £30. Has been available cheaper on disc before.
  • Well worth every penny.
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • Hmm £30 is the very top end of my normal sale budget and Persona is a few quid cheaper.

    Ill have a think.

  • Reckon I can easily hit 10 games this year. I didnt play many, but I played some damn good games. Best year in a loooooooong time for me, game wise at least.

Only regret is not having time for Nier and the demo was shit-hot.

  • Nier is top tier.

    My current list:

    Zelda
    Mario/NieR
    NieR/Mario
    Nex Machina
    Edith Finch
    Destiny 2
    Rime

    Still to play/finish:
    Hollow Knight
    Samus Returns
    Persona 5
    Lost Legacy
    Death of the Outsider
    Splatoon 2?
    More Arms?

Gotta cane it over Xmas break.

10 is too many, as is the points difference between first and second with that system. No big deal though really. I can certainly come up with 5 good 'uns, maybe a couple more.
What do you think of Andy’s suggestion?

Wot? Pick a list, and order it?

The institution of original though, eh?

Nah... Maybe I am being thick, and well, you said this is a discussion...

    hylian_elf wrote:
Let's get this thing going and thoughts floating. Usual rules (modified for 10 rather than 5 entries as so many good games this year) below, but shall we discuss making it slightly different this year?  Andy suggested allowing up to 10 entries, and you give each game a score between 1 and 10, can only use a number once.  So you could have Nier, Nioh and Hollow Knight and give them 5, 6 and 10 respectively depending on how well you think of the game.  That way someone's second best won't just get hefty points just for being the year's second best for that person. Discuss.

So... If I can only name three games... Using what I think you've suggested...

    1: Nier = 10,
    2: Hollow Knight = 8,
    3: Nioh = 6

Valid? Because if taken as described above, that reads like a description of a standard ordinal system, I lie? Like:

    1: Nier = 10,
    2: Hollow Knight = 9,
    3: Nioh = 8,
    ...
    7: Some brass game = 4

  • New system

You list your games, I assign points to them based on how I am feeling at the time.
  • 1. Superflight

I can't think of a game that captures flight better than this, which is handy given its name. It's like playing a dream, beautifully free-form and relaxed, bare bones but all the better for it.

At first the controls feel a little imprecise but they're actually great, and there's a wonderful sense of freedom and speed.

The graphics are perhaps more rudimentary than I'd like but they provide a fantastic sense of scale and at times it can be strangely beautiful. The procedural generation is real good, too.

It's genuinely wonderful and it's only two quid.

    2. Breath of the Wild

Beautiful and gorgeous, it respects you enough to let you explore and nearly always makes it worth your while. Wonderful environmental variety, an excellent physics engine and gorgeous music and character design.

It values peace and solitude and that's a rare quality in big modern games. The way the sun shines on the grass, man. Fucking intense.

    3. Pako 2

I love this. Great physics and wonderful level design. I was sad enough to dream about GTAV before it came out and my dream looked a lot like this. They're still tweaking it but it's already great.

    4. Streets of Rogue

You can tell a fridge to run.
  • Ooh, pako 2 gonna get votes from 2 people. Dark horse.

Also, that's good news on superflight. On my list.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Wishlist.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • There's plenty of stuff to add as I inevitably amend the list throughout 2018, still looking forward to playing Edith Finch, Steamwold Dig 2, Golf Story and a few others, but I'm currently thinking:

    1. Mario Odyssey [10]
    [Thumper - Switch [10]]
    2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild [9]
    3. Yakuza 0 [9]
    [Mario Kart Deluxe [9]]
    4. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle [9]
    5. Sonic Mania [9]
    6. Nex Machina [9]
    7. Cuphead [8]
    8. Rime [8]
[Shovel Knight - Specter of Torment campaign [8]]
    9. ARMS [8]
    10. Unacharted: Lost Legacy [7]

Will add reviews when I settle on an order.  ARMS has shot up in my estimation this week.

Don’t worry buddy - I’ve been there. Tried for years to force myself to like Sonic but I finally realised Sonic is fundamentally shit, and will always be shit.

That’s why when a Sonic game is lauded as nailing it, and “finally” being a return to “form” I know that it’s not for me - a return to form for Sonic is a return to being hard shit when it had previously been a different consistency of equally stinky shit.

    1. Nier: Automata
    2. Yakuza 0
    3. Persona 5
    4. Emily is Away Too
    5. Prey

That top 3 is the exact order I told to B when he asked what I'd want to play the most on the ps4. Hopefully I'll grab NieR for $25 this Black Friday.

I don't have a top 5 or 10 yet, but some good candidates are Zelda BotW, ARMS, and Splatoon 2.
300+ hours playtime from Zelda and Splatoon combined, and both are gonna climb when the DLC / December Update drops.

Do demos count? I'm pretty sure the Monster Hunter World demo is gonna be amazing.

I like Moot's system, but I'm not sure if that's what Elf/Andy was describing either...

    Zelda a 9 though...

    So far I have

    1: Zelda Botw
    2: Mario
    3: Cuphead...
    4: Arms

Cuphead's underrated... It's an evolutionary change in game design.
Through structure, it makes excessively challenging problems palatable.

    That's quite fresh.
But we can change lists later right? Xenogears 2 hasn't dropped, and I've not picked up Tekken 7 yet...
