Davy, I know you're down for Nintendo, but could you go for an 8-bit Sega platformer, or early MD at a push? If nothing springs to mind, a comparable Nintendo platformer would be fine.
I'm happy to play Bucky again, it's great. Also a bit of a poster child for 'that's a NES game?!?' thanks to its visuals.
Have we covered Megadrive Toki? We might have. That's a good one - wouldn't be able to pick another - I'm happy to wait a round if someone else can fill in.
Actually - why not try the Master System version of Addams Family? I'm very fond of the SNES game and it would be interesting to see how the SMS coped with it.
It plays not unlike Jet Set Willy with a large house to navigate and weird enemies following set patterns to avoid. Instead of collecting items you have to rescue family members by navigating a sequence of tough rooms and then defeating a boss.
....unless of course I suggested that one in an earlier post too????!!!!
Done the red planet and half the green one on Bucky O'Hare. I've definitely played it before. The bit where the lava chases you down the screen announces the difficulty pretty early (although maybe the red planet's the toughest of the initial selection). Nice controls, good visuals, great music and interesting level design. A good one.
Addams Family was a bit of a comedown, as it appears to be one of those Flying Edge one-off-the-wrist 8-bit tie-ins that were rushed out for cash. It's even got the revolving theme tune that doesn't break stride whether you're staring at the title screen, watching the demo or playing the game. Not to be confused with the 16-bit game, which is very different, and seemed pretty good whenever I've tried it. I'll play more of the MS one, but based on a 5 minute muck about I'm calling Bad Game.
Pick one of those MD games - or California games - and you're welcome to kick the next one off on Monday. The way we're doing it at the mo is someone will be given the task of picking something similar on a Nintendo console and they'll run at the same time (currently sticking to 8/16-bit Sega/Nintendo stuff).
I played some more Addams Family and it's not very good. It's not abysmal, which was my initial take, but it's a middling effort overall. Apparently it's an update/overhaul of the NES version, with a similar layout but vastly different graphics. Controls are iffy and it's got the classic 8-bit unrewarding frustration thing going on.
Bucky is a 91% in old money (VERY tricky though), Addams is maybe a 53%.
I remember SNES Adams Family to be okayish visually. Not sure if the gameplay would hold up against Konami/Treasure in their prime. Even with 8 bit they were a raw force to behold.
Steam: Ruffnekk Windows Live: mr of unlocking Fightcade2: mrofunlocking
Any thing I play will have to be through emulation on the laptop unfortuntley (and thats provided the games work) so if your okay with that I'm happy to get involved. Otherwise I'll be happy to just make suggestions and hear somebody else's take on a game.
My mega drive suggestions :
Golden axe
Comix zone
Road rash 2
Ea hockey
Earth worm Jim
Desert strike
I have played alot of wrestlefest the old 16bit coin op recently but I don't think that was ever ported to the home consoles so I wasn't sure whether to put that on the list.
Nice. Always wanted to play a Choplifter game, may have had a quick go on the MS one but that's about it.
Nuclear Strike is the only Strike entry I've played properly, I was craaaap at the two I borrowed on MD in the 90's (Desert and Jungle). I'm more of a Red Zone man.
