But I’m all for the goal of real lab-grown meat. Actual meat that’s grown from donor cells, not taken from animals by killing and butchering them.
Lab-grown meat will be consistently perfect in quality and nutrition. It’ll be cruelty-free. It’ll be better than the majority of meat we can buy easily now. And, eventually, it’ll become affordable. Once it becomes cheaper than normally sourced meat, it’ll be a no-brainer. It’ll change the world.
Right now it’s massively expensive, about £2k per pound of beef, but only five years ago it was working out £250,000 per pound. This stuff is on its way to the mass-market, we just need to give it time.
There will be ethical issues to work out though. Vegetarian/vegan authorities are already publishing statements that lab-grown meat is still derived from animals and so is not suitable for veggies. And we’d better brace ourselves for America’s religious right to have some sort of moral outcry about it being damn scientists meddling with genetic something or other.
