That's a really nice model noface and Questor that paint scheme is sweet. I did two things of note over the holidays - played the shit out of hades and started painting Abaddon. I'm really pleased with how he's turning out. d1cbmU1.jpg

He's looking ace, really nice work on the face especially. I had the opportunity to pick him up for cheap cos a pay was selling him off, but he was half build and based so I chose not to. What are you using for your black? It looks a lot more matte and grey than GW Abaddon?
  • I think that's the lighting; it's just my ambient room lighting and loses a fair amount of colour versus how it looks in real life.

    I used the GW black/blue scheme, which I think is abaddon black, dark reaper, thunderhawk blue and then fenrisian grey (I actually used a slightly bluer blue than fenrisian grey, but it's pretty similar). The armour panels have been airbrushed, which is why they look perfectly matt in some areas.  {I say 'I think' - I'm 100% sure without checking}

I am shocked at how good the face is. I spent a lot of time on it, but it just came together when I started glazing purple over it. IMO it's the best thing I've ever painted.
  • It looks really nice!

Fucking airbrushes man, Shaking my fist at you.
  • You'd be surprised. They're nice for base coating, but after that they're not much use unless you are an absolute god. They're really finicky - air pressure is tough to get right alongside paint consistency. On top of that, you really have to commit to the sessions where you use them. It's not like washing your brush in some water and sticking it in your mouth and calling it good.

I've also found full on highlighting with it doesn't look that good in real life; everything looks like it's made out of plastic, so it needs brush work on top.

Definitely a useful tool, but you're not missing a huge amount aside from the smoothness of the base coats.
  • Yeah it's the basecoat I want them for, my legit least favourite part, and seems to take forever.
  • My least favourite bit is the trim. If there was an airbrush that did the trim on chaos marines I'd be all over it. If only these chaos boys weren't so pretty.

Edit: base-coating the trim I guess I mean.
  • Abaddon looks really cool. I was looking at that model the other day, very nice.
  • Apologies for image spam. Worked on the Dread Pageant over the weekend, a really lovely Slaanesh Warband.

    8th or 9th?

I can help with any questions!
  • The colouring on those bases looks really nice. I think I will copy it if I ever end up buying any of the new AoS slaanesh mortal followers.
  • Tempy those slaanesh mortals are pretty good, I guess.
"Let me tell you, when yung Rouj had his Senna and Mansell Scalextric, Frank was the goddamn Professor X of F1."
  • I just bought a cordless airbrush off Ali Express.
Hasn’t turned up but it’s a neat little fucker.
A battery attached to a tiny air compressor, attached to an airbrush. £30. One unit no hoses.
It’s about 20-25 psi which is fine.
It’s not going to be a great airbrush and it’s not going to be a great compressor but for £30 all it needs to do is base colours, varnish coats and not take to any space.
There’s a bit of a sale on Ali right now if anyone is interested.
Ive bought all kinds off there in the past with no issues.

  • Done a commission for a friend. Not quite as happy with it as I am sure I could be, but he's happy with the pictures so far.

Had another blast tonight and I think I understand about 60% of each thing, which is pretty useless.

I'm working through the book that came with know no fear so I think it's 8th edition. I get the basic steps of movement, shooting and fighting but the nuances are tripping me up all the time. I couldn't figure out if a space marine interceptor could jump out of being surrounded by poxwalkers. The poxwalkers were within 1 inch so do they have to just keep fighting?

Is there a good video or write up of the basics out there?

I think it's great - the helmeted version works better than the face - the gold trim above the eyes is really well executed.

How do you find working with the forgeworld resin? For some reason I don't enjoy painting it as much as the GW plastic. Everything is really crisp (too much), and then there's a slight amount of wonk to everything. It's not bad; the detail is amazing, I just prefer the newer plastic models.
  • I like Forge World resin, makes GW feel fucking laughable. But it is different texture wise to plastic, and paint does not seem to adhere to it as well -it's a bit of a battle some times, but that Tarvitz sculpt had such amazing detail. Chalk me up for preferring Modern Plastics though.

Speaking of which, pretty happy with how these lads turned out:

I have a set of molds for making a chess set - medieval type of thing. Have been lying around for decades. What sort of material would I use to cast them?

    plaster or resin.
The types of resin are legion and it’s a little bit toxic (use it outside or well ventilated) and a bit of a pain to work with but it’s not hard by any means.
Just takes a bit of common sense and planning before you start mixing etc...

I’ve done bits and pieces with clear resin and that’s the trickiest to work with because of air bubbles. But if you are going to paint the resin then buy opaque stuff or clear stuff and don’t worry about bubbles.

I remember making up a set with plaster when I was a teenager (that's how old these are). I fancy using resin as the plaster isn't very resilient.  Can't see me trying clear - is it possible to get white and black I wonder..

Easier just to paint them I suppose.

Yes. You can get opaque white resin and I think I’ve seen black.
Above is a clear resin mess about thing.

  • It took a lot of sanding to get it that clear, but if you are painting it then you won’t have to sand.

  • Not a fan of OSL eh Tempy?

Love the chap that's on magical fire.
  • Babies first OSL  kept it nice and sedate!
  • I don't know - looks pretty balls deep to me.
  • Pretty happy with this helmet. Hopefully the whole model will be finished this weekend (cloak and base to go, which doesn't sound like a lot... but...)

    EeERrT8.jpg?1

Not sure what's going on with the weird fringing - I'm guessing that's because of how zoomed in the photo is?
  • I believe so, yep. Good helmet though!
