Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Id wholly recommend my city as a game you can play with the family. It’s a ten (out of ten) for me.

Temps, word of advice if you will. How would you approach painting the armour on this fella from Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion? aoa6Oou.jpg

GW reds are very heavy pigment (khorne and mephiston) though this looks like it'd be better if done with a paint closer to Mephiston. Shade with either dark browns or purples, not washes but thinned down paint like Rhinox Hide (which is quite ruddy and used a lot by GW for shadows on 'Eavy Metal schemes). You could do some blending. A good highlight for red like this would be something around the Evil Suns Scarlet hue, if you want it to look more metallic aim for white final highlights, otherwise I like Wild Rider Red, which is quite orangey!

Ta, I think I have most of those....unless they've dried out.
  • I'm going to disagree with Tempy.... Unless I was going to go maximum 100 hour plus on painting that, I'd add some metallic medium into that red. Painting red with acrylics has a tendency to come out quite dull because of the matt/satin finish (especially mephiston red), where-as the armour in the picture has a metallic sheen to it. Based on the picture, I'd also lean towards using black (or something like Payne's grey) for the shadows to give extra contrast, rather than a warm brown. Since I'm saying use metallics, an oil wash would work well here. Washing with oils (oil paint thinned with alcohol or turps) gives such good results it feels like hobby cheating.

  • Sure, you could do metallics with inks or GW contrast. I don't really have a problem with red being dull, you can top them up with glazes like contrast, but I find GW reds work. If I was gonna do it, i'd definitely do purple recesses rather than brown(because it matches the skin), but i'd avoid  metallics cos it just isn't the way I'd do it. There's lots of ways to skin a cat, as they say!

Cheers dudes! Now I just have to wait for the rain to stop (Manchester, so never) so I can spray a bunch of minis.
  • In hindsight - the fleshtearer red contrast paint is amazing, and has a very slight gloss finish. Using a silver base coat and then applying flesh tearers contrast over it will give decent results for very little fuss. An edge highlight of the silver base coat would give a few extra marks.
  • Did anyone play Beasts of Balance? They have a new kickstarter for an expansion or refresh and I'm tempted but it's hella expensive for what is essentially stacking animal shapes on a tower but with added gimmicky tablet integration.

I guess that answers my own question but I still want it.
  • Thanks for more board game recommendations.

Tilly got some of the Funkoverse games over Christmas but Covid meant that none of us felt like playing anything. Finally got them out this week and had a blast. Was surprised how quick each game was which was really refreshing as it meant we had time for more than one match, even when learning rules.

We have it, your impressions are correct. It’s kind of fun, but I’m not convinced it’s worth the money.

(I’ll ask my daughter is she’s prepared to part with it on the grounds she hasn’t played it in ages. If so, happy to send it up to you if you like - though knowing her she’ll probably insist it’s her favourite thing ever if I suggest giving it away!)

  • Hmm I thought as much, good to know that my initial impression was correct. Thanks Tin that's a lovely offer but I think my enthusiasm for the game has waned now so no need to trouble her.

I've rattled through 16 15mm cowboys tonight using contrasts in just over 90 minutes.

They don't stand up to extended scrutiny, but being able to knock up 3 squads worth of minis for Song of Blades and Heroes, to an acceptable 15mm table standard so fast is just awesome. They look great on the table to play with.

I'll do 16 Native Americans tomorrow so will have 6 squads in about 3 hours. That'll do me.
  • I'm just gonna say, I think if they have to fight some of the other models in this thread they're very very dead.

Indeed. They're also over 1/3rd of the size and considerably less time spent on them so whatevs.

    You star Nexx. Ordered.

They had them in Meeples Corner on Tuesday but I missed out, and then Amazon have some but they look like the Italian language version so didn't risk it.
  • Those cowboys look great. Bases are really nice, and the contrast make them pop nicely. Do they also have an enamel/oil wash?

No, the matt varnish was just on when I took the pics.

Bases are pennies for magnetic storage. Plus cheaper than buying actual bases lol.
  • Might be looking at getting rid of a few games in the next couple of weeks to clear some space.
Was only looking for pennies to cover the postage as they are mostly older review copies and I'm not really comfortable selling them.

Would any of you be interested?

I only get cheapo 15mm so I can have so many warbands and play loads of systems etc. I'm more interested in the games than the modelling. I do enjoy painting but have to be in the mood to put any real effort in, hence slapping contrast on loads of 15mm at once is ideal.

I now have 15 themed warbands for Song of Blades and Heroes, and a similar amount for Mutants and Death ray Guns. These will also work in a bunch of Osprey rules, not to mention countless mixed warbands. That ain't happening with GW, even though the minis are absolutely amazing.
  • Yeah I get that. I am too wedded to the lore and systems of GW right now. Maybe when lockdown ends and I play more, i'll be keen to tackle more non-gw stuff.

Also I reckon this article our pal @Roujin did might be up your street - it's about making a unit of Chaos Cultists out of Non-GW minis, features some cool third party stuff and is generally just a pleasure of a read.
  • damyeh!

Retweet my article and shit, I need the clout so GW send me free stuff in the future!
