Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Ha - the guy I wanted to show is in bits, and the only picture I have of him has him very tactically posed to hide the annoying gap.

I think these boys were the first thing I painted after getting back into modelling as an adult. I like your ones a lot more!

I'd go with more sections with no grass. Not sure where I heard/read it, but I think having two distinct textures is a good idea for bases (so like, mud and rock, or rock and grass, or tile and grating - that kind of thing).

Yeah I think a bit of less is more might work note effectively. I have some small rocks so I could also use one or two of those on a base as well just to give some additional texture differences.

Will see how the next base turns out!

Also I love the 40k Emps Kids colour scheme, if I couldn't think of a scheme I wanted to use for mine, I would have gone with the default. As it is I came across an awesome deamon prince model in my search that has the lake armour with the gold trim and people accents and thought it looked super regal and definitely fitting for an emporer's children warband. When I started painting my actual marines I'd seen the Sons of the Phoenix scheme for the Imperial Fists "successor" chapter, and realised I almost had the same colours so why not just paint my troops up in the same pattern because they are in fact the actual sons of the phoenix.

Don't think there is a separate thread for playing ordinary board games so I'll post this here.

Played a game called Upwords with Wifey and the girls yesterday. This has been in the board game cupboard for years. It plays like Scrabble in how you place tiles to make words but there are quite a few differences.

Words are scored at 2pts per letter. A "Q" is actually a "Qu" tile.
    J, Qu, X and Z score 2pts.

    No special scoring squares.

No plonking an S down to pluralise a word - unless the S is part of a new word built on your turn.

But - clue being in the name - you can stack vertically - you can plonk a tile on another to change a word. When you do this you score 1 pt per letter BUT - you also score 1pt for every tile that is covered up in the word. You can stack up to 5 tiles so in theory you can end up scoring 5pts per letter if a word is at its highest.

The seems to make the game 2 phase - after the initial Scrabble style play you run out of room and are forced to start building up - and then the scores per turn start to climb too. It's a fun variation.

You lose 5 pts per tile left on your rack at the end.

The version we have is quite fancy - it has an electronic scoreboard that is well thought out and non-fiddly. You can see all 4 scores at one time. You can also set up timers for either per turn or for a complete game. It even keeps top 4 scores as long the battery lasts. There's wheels on the base that makes for easy rotation and all the tiles, racks etc fit in a compartment for storage. Noice. :)

Daughter no.2 won but it was a close game. Will return to this 'un. She used the word "SPUNK" on one of her turns. We ended up all laughing after a pregnant pause. She claims she meant the old school American meaning. I let that go.

There's a challenge mode with extra coloured tiles for 1 v 1 or 2 v 2 - haven't tried that yet. I suspect the coloured tiles allow the stealing of words for scoring or something.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.

Upwords is great. Used to play it loads. There’s a version on iOS if you want to play on hols.
  • @equinox_code I painted up one of your Secret Santa minis! Super fun model to paint and completed pretty quickly (just over a week I think) by my own, slow standards. One absolute chad Master of Executions ready to hit the battlefied in search of the virgin loyalist astartes characters.

P.s. fuck the camera on my phone, it's shit and I hate it and it's so bad I'm thinking about getting my old phone back out just to handle taking pictures. Hateful Samsung, you used to make good camera modules, now they suck, or at least, now they have a mind of their own and are configured for fucking about with the image even after you turn everything off. Like, why is the fucking depth of field so shallow!? Booooo I say. Boooooo.

  • Mini looks ace Rouj, but I feel sad for the camera. Love all the different heraldry stitched together. Brilliant idea, and it's so well done.

I have finished my Keeper of Secrets. I enjoyed painting this, they've gone to live on the big shelf.

  • I can't see those pictures Rouj - on either phone or pc (so I don't think it's me).

Nice Keeper Tempy. It's a really fantastic model, full of expression. The first picture really brings out the character of the model. Love the eyes.

Oh noes! Probably cos I just lazily linked them off google photos I guess.

Well I managed to get some better pics sorted so will try again below. Also, I've gushed elsewhere about the Keeper that Tempy has done, but I will just echo that it is fucking rad as all heck and is one of the best things I think he's painted so far. Love the iridescence of the bright greens going down into that purple in the robes and I love the green eye shadow around the eyes, although it could be OSL? I dunno, it's cool either way.

  • Love it - my favourite thing to see in miniatures is story, and that is absolutely full of it. The cloak is inspired, and I love his axe.

This might annoy you - I think you've painted his lower eyelid instead of his eye. GW have a habit of making their space marine eyes absolutely tiny, so it's understandable. I legit use a magnifying headset to paint them as I can't see them otherwise.
  • Also shout out to that base - the variety of textures really works.

Plus the black rim is as smooth as the purple armour. Nice.

Don't worry I'm aware of this, I really struggled to get the eye picked out at all on this model, got the blob somewhere near the right location and just left it at fuck it that'll do. Doesn't really show up from arms length, but in the photos is quite noticable, aye (pun intended).

  • nice work! what size are they? They don't look big, but at the same time some of the details are quite small, so..

Guess things like this can't be done in a single sitting.
  • Speaking of painting small things - I don't think I've posted this link before. I use this pair of magnifying glasses, and I think they're great. I've tried a couple, and the first pair weren't very comfortable. These ones sit nicely like a pair of glasses and don't make me feel sick because I can easily see around them (for example when the brush needs more paint on it).

  • He is about 40mm from the bottom of his shoes to the top of the spikes on his backpack.

As for timing depends on the painter and how they're painting. I worked on this guy in the evenings and couple of daytime sessions over the course of a week, which is pretty quick for me, but I'm quite slow. It's definitely possible to paint that model in a single sitting depending on how much detail and how much highlighting you do or don't want to do.

    Lovely stuff as always everyone.
  • Haha, one week seems pretty fast to me. I was guessing around 20 hours for the modelling and painting.
  • I always rush my paint jobs. Bad habit. I did the Keeper in about 3 days.

This was definitely in the region of 20-25 hours, I had the week off so was able to paint a lot more than normal!
the skull detail is embossed on the model, or you just added that in?

The skull is already sculpted onto the model, I didn't really do any freehand details or sculpting on this dude. The banners were all done using thin masking tape to get the straight lines and then the icons were all transfers that were painted over slightly if they were big enough to need some highlighting or shading adding to them.

I wish I could paint stuff as fast as you. I've got 5 CSM built and ready to go, and my plan is to spend less than a week painting them. I just have to get the air compressor out and put the mask on and..... maybe I should just have one run on slay the spire instead....
