I think I’ve been misunderstood here. Tradespeople are still working during lockdown and still working in people’s homes. Just not some of the ones I want to use right now.
Between fixing up our flat to sell, moving house, and getting things checked/recommissioned at the new house, we’ve had loads of workies in through the year. From glaziers to gas engineers, fireplace installers, plumbers, etc.
Some (all?) boilers have two way valves inside that dictate if hot water goes to heating, taps or a mix of both.
If that has broken or gummed up it wont be able to regulate that flow. I tcould be that.
When mine went it was easy to tell as running the hot tap made the radiators hot. If yours has gone it would be the opposite issue which will be harder to test.
First, bleed your radiators. Eliminate that potential issue.
And check that you haven’t switched the heating off on your boiler. Most have a switch/dial to turn between heating, water, or both. Make sure it’s set to both.
If the problem persists, it’s probably the regulator valve Liv described. Call a boiler technician / plumber.
Ta. It's very sudden, and all the radiators, which makes me think not just bleeding. Will check dials but they all looked sensible, so maybe it is a gunged up internal valve thingy, in which case boo and hiss.
When it happened to me it was the height of summer, I was hungover trying to have a shower while the flat got hotter and hotter making me more and more frustrated.
The guy degunked mine, mostly caused by hard water. I didnt pay much more than the standard call out charge.
It’s a pain to get workies out at the moment, but if it helps you feel any more hopeful, I’ve never paid more than £40 to have that valve cleaned or replaced.
it's likely to be the valve that switches the hot water between the tap and the central heating. Happened to us - water board was working on the road and whacked a plug of clay into the mains to save them the bother of cutting off the supply...our boiler valve had clay in it.
And not just cos of the timer thingy, before someone suggests that. So I'm nervous singing is kinda letting. But we're gonna be moving it in a bit maybe so maybe I'll try to limp through and have plumbers check while they're out anyway...
Did you bleed the radiators? That would make them work again. You might need to top up the pressure in the system though. You do that at the boiler - it will have a pressure gauge and there will be a tap used to top the pressure up.
I can confirm that Tetris is much less fun in real life.
That took me an hour. Shifting 1.75 tons of logs from one crate to another at the opposite end of the barn. And I managed to splinters even though I was wearing riggers gloves.
