What a condescending arrogant bastard.  I really have had a bellyfull of this. Does he really think he came up with a response fitting of a PM?

  • Was going to say Full play to andrew marr not just calling him pathetic when he tried to use marrs misspoken "my fault" comment to eat up interview time.

But maybe not, he shouldnt have let him away with it.

    I for one am shocked.
  • I'm sure some middle class office workers will be along in a bit to volunteer to slaughter the pigs.

One thing Alistair Campbell was saying the other day about how he comments on things (in that case police protecting woman) which isn’t his place - don’t opine, act you are the fucking PM.
Nice that his expensive eduction taught him how live stock farming works though, that interview was beyond patronizing

Pay me enough to do it, train me properly, as part of a gradual change in how we appreciate the realities of modern food supply chain as we try to move society away from catastrophic failure partly down to the attitudes of “we can’t change that we can’t afford it you champagne socialist”, and fuck yes
  • But playing the part of bailing out Johnson doesn’t appeal so much. NIce straw man tho

I'm down to a quarter tank. All local places still empty. When am I allowed to stay panicking?

Its ok, the army are on their way.
They sent a tank down to my local last night. No idea what they expected that turret to do but it wasn't helping calm things down

I believe we need to pay drivers more?

Army drivers are on £20K a year.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • But is that £20k pa with no housing costs or utility bills because you’re accommodated on base?
  • The HGV thing is fucked and will be fucked for a good while.
Pay should/is being improved but we also need to improve rest stops to even equal EU conditions.

Then there is the fact that we have put two fingers up to EU workers so we need to resolve that. Also our actions forced a bunch of EU drivers to miss Christmas with their family last year so they are unlikely to want to sit at a ferry crossing again at any time of year let alone Christmas. So we either need to change our border regulations or massively up the efficiency of checks (more facilities and staff basically) which will of course take time.

    EU drivers are gone.
We need to train our own but that is going to take time, investment and targeting of young people.

It is going to take so long I wouldn't be surprised if supply chains change first. To what I have no idea but there is enough money that hinges on logistics that if an alternative can be found it will.
  • I’ll tell you what - the companies working on autonomous driving and AI-driven trucks etc are loving all of this.

What I don’t understand is why rail freight companies aren’t shouting louder right now. They could be using this mess to rebuild some of their industry.
  • Oh absolutely and what better way to eliminate government doubts on AI than to dig them out the shit. Don't be shocked if there is a bunch of government funding put that way. In fact Sunak announced 2000 AI jobs (apprenticeships iirc) yesterday.

Rail freight I don't know. Maybe they are but is the industry that big these days? Could be that it has eroded to the point it can't expand quickly enough to be a solution.

    That's a good point actually.

  • Truth is that rail freight is still quite a big deal, but relies on HGVs for the final miles. Rail freight no longer runs directly into towns and cities, but to out-of-town logistics hubs instead. Railheads, they’re called. It’s all about the containerisation of logistics. Lifting containers off ships and on to trains then off trains and on to trucks is mega-efficient … until there are no trucks and everything stacks up instead.
  • So this brexit thing is going swimmingly then?

The gov is going to have to open the borders and have generous packages from employers. It's more evidence of incompetency and arrogance. Pure and simple. No plan.

By all means have aims about UK employees doing more of these jobs if that is what you want (I won't go into why)  but you have to identify the jobs affected by Brexit and then build up capacity over several years.

    Cheers.

It makes sense I suppose as we have moved our shops and industry out of and to the edge of towns while our rail has remained much the same for 100 years and the places where freight would be dropped off has been repurposed.
I live in a building opposite the train station that used to store hops before being moved to breweries, prime example.
The brewery in town is now offices/flats and the new brewery is now a massive out of town thing.
  • Aye, that’s it. Land in towns and cities is too valuable to use for industry or logistics now.

Along the motorway here there’s three or four enormous logistics hubs. Railheads beside the motorway, with their own junctions and business parks that have built up around them for office workers. Brands like Amazon, Tesco, etc build their warehouses beside them to reduce shipping times.

    1000,000 drivers needed.
    5000 visas offered.
127 applications. (This is the number today and admitted by twat himself Johnson but 27 or 127 is splitting hairs)

I think the damage is done.

That number of 127 applications is even lower than I expected tbh. I thought they might get something like 500-1000, with those applying doing so because they have strong ties here and see a paid trip over to see family every no and again. Or a may as well apply type thing.
