Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Oh my, the confusion was rampant early.
I'm still great and you still love it.

Spent the last week making a 2x2 board and terrain so I can play more Songs of Blades and Heroes at home rather than mainly at club. Quite pleased with the results.

Simple but effective. Good stuff. Putting trees on a base is a great way of doing woods; saves a lot of arguments if you can say "on the base means in the woods, which means obscured/in cover/whatever".

Definitely. And it all packs away nicely into a Really Useful box to shove in the loft in between games. I've got a bunch of cardboard buildings to make this week.

So I've bought the Black Seas starter set by Warlord Games as it's become very popular at club and I really like it.

Nobody else has been arsed to do the rigging, so of course idiot features here had to have a go.

Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever been as stressed out in my life. It nearly broke me. The sails weren't fun either. Only another 2 Frigates and 6 Brigs to go.

Fuck me. The mere thought sends shivers down me timbers.

It's not perfect, but considering I nearly stamped it into a billion pieces halfway through the rigging I'll take it.
  • looks awesome but you could catch me dead doing that. Nice work Pea!

The first few were easy. But then as you add more the prior ones become slack as you add tension and AAAAAAAARGHHHHHHH!!!

I'm going for a nice walk to see the squirrels.

  • The rigging takes that up about 50 notches. Super nice.

Do you have to do anything to it to stop it losing tension over time?

Oh man, don't say that. I hope they don't lol.

There's a blob of glue on every loop and knot so hopefully that is enough. I'll cry if it goes saggy.

Just tell it it's beautiful and stroke it gently.

Maybe do a test first (i.e. not on the model), but diluted pva (scenic glue) or runny super glue might help keep it in the right shape. It also might give it a weird gloss finish, so you might have to follow with some matt varnish.

Disclaimer: I have no idea if this is necessary, and whether it will make it worse

I think it should be OK. The middle rigging went a little slack while I was doing it, but then the fore and aft rigging pulled them tight when I did that. It's all surprisingly sturdy.

I imagine it'll take be twice as long as the other players to move them when I actually play with them as I carefully nudge them along while holding my breath.

I have the boardgame, I assume this is a new thing you're on about?
  • Yis, the HH team have updated the rules a bit and are releasing a new edition with a lot of new plastic kits replacing the old resin stuff from Forgeworld. It's not a re-invention or anything, but it's bringing the game into stores in plastic, which will open it up for folk. Not gonna be cheap though, cos it is Heresy. About 90% of people will be buying this box and using it as one army.

I'm on about the old Fantasy Flight game, which isn't the same as what you're talking about. Is it?
  • Nope, that's the licensed game FFG did based on the Horus Heresy setting – I hear it's good!

It's very very good, but takes a fair chunk of an evening to get through.

  • I'm not going to get it - way too many plain marines that I'll never get around to painting. If you play, I can see the appeal.
  • Never really dived into the Games Workshop thing to be honest. I see the attraction but I've always balked at the prices and I know If I started going in I would end up going all in.

  • The pricing thing is always interesting cos when I was in shitty part-time jobs barely scraping £12k a year I still found money for Warhammer. Part of that was due to finding a good community to split big deal boxes with, often it was just being canny about eBay and discounts from third-party retailers.

Pricing still comes up as the number one grudge point with many folk who comment on the Warhammer hobby in general (not here) who think that because other companies can make minis cheaper, it should therefore track that GW should, which ignores lots of things, not least the fact that they employ people like myself.

What always keeps me sane is that, sure, a single model like the Avatar of Khaine might cost near a small boardgame, but I bought Root in September last year and it has not left the shelf once for a game. It's just a pain in the ass for me to find the time and people to play boardgames, but I had a blast painting the Avatar, its on display in my cabinet, and I have used him for a bunch of games, and will continue to do so.

As with any hobby, it's worth what you get out of it I guess.
  • Oh, I totally agree with you @tempy, as I'm sure I have games I've paid for that haven't had the love they should have. I'm also concerned once I get started, I'm likely to spend a small fortune grabbing all the shiny I want. That's what scares me.

  • It is very easy to just keep buying. I am in danger even with my formidable discount. I have become quite at rationalising not buying stuff, even though often it could be absurd not to because of value.
  • I haven't bought anything for more than a year now. When squats are released I'll pick up a box or so, but until then there's not much I want and nothing I need.
