That’s my plan. Finish it asap, hopefully within a week for Starfield, then eBay it. With the tenner in points I’ll break even at the worst.

What did you buy it on, out of interest?

Series X. PlayStations only for exclusives…Thougg it’s supposedly exceptional across both so you can’t go wrong.

Ah cool. Was going to offer the ebay price when you get rid but I'm a discless boner.

This doesn't seem to be as expensive as I thought it would be anyway. Have next gen prices settled down to £50ish now or is this a bit cheaper than most?
  • All of the footage I saw of this before release screamed a solid 8. Everything I've played of it so far feels a solid 8.

True to From, it feels old school. Not much in the way of bloat, just frantic shooting of things.

I thought the big boys had now all gone up to £70 so I dunno? If it’s around £50 I’m in when I get back.

Cheaper than most it seems, £55 in store at game but like I said a tenner back in points so only £45 really which is a bargain. That tenner has already gone on Starfield premium unlock.

Holy fuck, that first boss. What a cunt
  • This is why I don't play From software games
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map
  • Yeah that tutorial boss is an eye opener all right. Managed to get him on the third attempt but my AP was so low I would have died from a stubbed toe. Use the tactics you've been shown and you'll get him, it's fine. Haven't done much more besides the next mission and spend some time in training and the garage, but it's definitely scratching that mecha itch.

Even your unmodified beginner mech feels great to control, the gameplay is fast and fluid, performance on PC is excellent, and the potential for customisation/builds seem suitably exhaustive.

Good first impressions then, and if the rest of the game is just that in escalation - slick combat, old school mission design, crazy bosses and difficulty spikes, and loads of customisation - I think I'll be okay with that. Well, depending on just how crazy they go with the bosses and difficulty spikes.
  • Boss on the first mission of chapter 2 is the first I’ve really struggled on. I either get him down to one shot or get absolutely pulverised.
  • Love rolling with a heavyweight tank build and dual shoulder mounted missle launchers.

    Very much a gun-porn game.

So far, it’s better than Cyborg Justice on the MegaDrive, which is the only other configurable mech game I’ve spent decent time with.

I bought this but upon reaching the first boss felt that my nerves really weren't ready at all and had to turn it off. No idea when I'll return. Ran great though, felt good, other than the enormous deadzones on the controller that I will have to do something about, if and when I come back.
It's a world of truck drivers.
  • This sounds right up my street. Bastard tough bosses? Yes please!
Not everything is The Best or Shit. Theres many levels between that, lets just enjoy stuff.
  • The only mech game I remember enjoying was Phantom Crash.

It's up there with some of the weirdest games I've played

Kind of hoped a radically different genre would allow them some flexibility in gameplay styles.

Seems sadly that they still think skill based mechs are the same as Dark Souls and such. I am probably wrong in the eyes of the forum, but thought it might be a chance to maybe find a cool middle ground. Seems like a double down. For me, that's a shame. I know others will be turgid for it
  • Jon's review said it had checkpoints (and has a mission-based, non open world approach?), which made me think it was more of a tough, customisable Vanquish sort of thing than Mech Souls. I'm still on the fence but I think I'd enjoy playing this more than their other modern games. What's the deal with proper Souls and checkpoints? I thought you woke up at a base or start of an area if you died and had to make your way back to your corpse/belongings. This sounds like you get to have another crack at success immediately.
  • Most people i've spoken two have been running two or three different mechs through the campaign, swapping loadouts and exploring new builds for specific bosses. Which is not really how Souls works.

Yes it is the complete opposite of how Souls goes, just watching streams showed that.

In a regular Souls like you explore massive maps that spread out from a bonfire which you respawn at when you die. The further you go, the more shortcuts you unlock that let you get back to bosses from bonfires quicker. Sometimes they're placed in weird places or have awkward run backs. ACVI is nowt like that.

Eurogamer’s review made it sound not very Soulslike at all:

    https://www.eurogamer.net/armored-core-6-fires-of-rubicon-review

That was what convinced me that I should try it at some point.
  • I know Caelyn, and she knows what she's talking about with mecha games and stuff.
  • Sitting outside of Sainsbury's. Might nip in to nab this from Argos. I fancy fomething a bit bigger than my usual fare for my week off and the shortlist is this, TLOU Remake (played the OG) or Dead Space Remake (not played the OG).
  • The difficulty seems as varied as it always was with AC tbf, and yeah it's not at all Souls. Like, at all. I'm guessing it gets tougher but chapter 1 is honestly fine. You'll blitz plenty of missions filled with regular enemies and then die to a tougher enemy you weren't prepared for, like you would in a hundred other games. It's pretty great.

Phantom Crash is seriously one of my favourite games and I still jump in every so often for a rumble. Holly scooby with hover legs stripped out for max speed, no shoulder weapons to reduce weight, Dog type chip, boosted OC, and rocking a Javelin laser and Penetrate Cone for melee. No ammo needed. Magic.

Fair enough folks. I kind of want to be tactical in Mech loadout and that help me through it. But not guide me.

I'll maybe give this a go. I'm determined to find the From game that clicks with me because I know they are good games
