The TV you like thread
  • His suits are great. You need to get through all of Boardwalk and the Sopranos by October for the Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark

Oh I forgot that was happening! Should be interesting. He's a very good writer.
"Given how long it's taken for me to reconcile my nature, I can't figure I'd forgo it on your account."
  • I was not aware of it at all! Been wanting a sopranos re-watch, haven’t seen it since original airing, no chance of getting through it in a a couple of months though.

Boardwalk’s great. Totally missed the boat when it first aired, binged the whole lot shortly after it finished though. Back when I had time to binge stuff.

I love the books. Think they're amazing (first few anyway). Don't quite see how it translates to TV though, hmm. May need to reread...

Out of interest with the books. Only read the first one which was just literally lots of talking. Do the sequels follow that pattern?

Can't remember in too much detail tbh. Don't remember a huge difference in style between the first three/four. Really enjoyed them all I think. Not sure I read the prequels tho.. :-/
  • I also had no idea there's a Sopranos prequel coming and I've also not seen the Sopranos since it aired. It's the best series for me, but I should probably rewatch to confirm that.

Read the first couple of Foundation books. I liked the ideas more than the books. They are pretty much a lot of people talking - the action that occurs is distant and disconnected. I do intend to return to it but I'm puzzled as to what film versions would be like. Feck all like the books I'd wager and no doubt will focus on the aforementioned remote action.

I have a physical DVD boxset of the complete Soporanos and I have yet to finish it....think I got to S3 maybe? Can't remember. I was loving it but I can't binge so I ended up getting distracted. I want to return to it now that I hear a prequel film is on the cards.

Pretty much, though they get progressively weaker. I'm a big fan of Asimov (I wrote a ridiculously long dissertation on the guy for my GCSE coursework when I was a teenager).  However, I'd say he's primarily a writer of ideas.  He likes to create a system then explore every permutation and implication of that system. The people in the stories, and arguably even the stories themselves, pretty much come second.  (It's worth remembering as well that Foundation started life as a series of short stories, and I'd argue it's best read that way.)

On the one hand it makes adapting his work difficult, because really, all you have is the idea.  On the other hand though, it kind of gives you free reign as long as you manage to stay true to the central conceit. Hopefully they'll manage that with this.  There's a whole load of room within Foundation for the kinds of political wrangling, double dealing, and tension that are de rigueur - as long as it all comes back to the central tension of "Is this all what Hari predicted?  What if he got something wrong?" - and the various permutations of bluff and double bluff that get looped into that.

Personally though, if I was adapting Asimov, I would have made a Susan Calvin TV show - basically House with robots...

I have limited experience.  I’ve only read Foundation.  It was awful.  Whoever’s adapting it has an awful lot of work on their hands.  Looks like they might be doing good, I guess. I mean the trailer looks good.  As I said, it’s more a jumping off point because they just can’t adapt the book.

  • Hmmm. I still love money heist, and I don't know how they could avoid it, but the darker tone of s3/4 doesn't always sit right with me.

Some of the characters are just nasty now, and I'm not a big fan.

The overall ideas and way they've ties things together and the way they reveal stuff is still super clever, but Palermo is indicative of a meaner streak I don't like.

Will still finish and hammer s5 when it drops in September, but hmmmmmm.

S1/2 are downright wholesome in comparison, and much more fun.

Watched all 3 episodes of BBC's Time last night. Quality show. Two leads doing their thing.

  • Finished the first series of gossip girl. It was 90 percent good and then the last episode just shits the bed a lot. It was like a cosmological event

  • Anyone watch the This Is Pop thing on Netflix? Looks pretty good.
  • I tried the first episode of The Watch on iPlayer. It’s the ‘divisive’ Pratchett adaptation that even Rhianna Pratchett has distanced herself from, despite owning most of its production company.

It’s … something. It’s not bad, per se, but it’s also not good. I don’t hate the enormous changes from the original texts, but I also don’t much see the point of them. Most importantly, and disappointingly, it’s been dumbed down to a teen show - which seems to be the problem with all Pratchett adaptations ever. Nobody takes them seriously, and the Watch novels - of all things - would make for an amazing TV show if they were just played straight.

Richard Dormer is pretty much dream casting as Sam Vimes, but he spends the entire show gurning like a Popeye cartoon. It’s bizarre.

10/10 for the make-up department, and 9/10 for the sets. Minus several million for the script.
  • I didn’t know that existed, and struggled to find it on IMDb because of the awful poster. What were they thinking?

  • I suspect there will be people who like it, maybe even love it. But those people will be 14-year olds who’ve never read a Pratchett book.
  • It could be done so well. I’m not angry, just disappointed. (You should see Jim over on Twitter. He’s angry.)

I finally got around to this. It’s good but not great. Level of enjoyment is very much linked to how into the subject matter of each episode you are - so I recommend picking and choosing.
  • watching that netflix series where they are going to three different places (cheap/luxury/unique) across the world. It's like holiday porn.

  • I finished s4 of Money Heist.

Love the characters, still, and there's still so much awesomeness in the focus on the plan and outsmarting and all that stuff, but man, I still feel like some of the innocence has gone from the first 2 series. Kinda natural progression, but yeah, some broad meanness and a touch of sadism in spots.

Started Kalta. Scandy horror/suspense thing. Big Fortitude vibes.

    Good stuff so far.

Bosch latest season is typically solid.
